Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a connective tissue disorder characterised by immune dysregulation, endothelial cell dysfunction followed by defective vascular repair and neovascularization and progressive tissue fibrosis of the skin and internal organs, whose pathophysiology remains to be fully elucidated. Perturbed neuroendothelial control mechanisms comprising either endothelial cell or peripheral nerve fiber impairment are supposed to play an important role in the onset of Raynaud's phenomenon and development of microvascular abnormalities which are the earliest events and key features of SSc. Such pathogenic neuroendothelial mechanisms may trigger both the early endothelial cell damage and the subsequent loss of peripheral microvascular integrity characterised by the lack of compensatory angiogenesis.

Polymorphisms in the immune response genes can contribute to clearance of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection but also mediate liver inflammation and cancer pathogenesis. This study aimed to investigate the association of polymorphisms in PD-1 (PDCD1), IFNL3 (IL28B), and TLR2 immune related genes in chronic HCV patients with different hepatic and lymphoproliferative HCV-related diseases. Selected PDCD1, IFNL3, and TLR2 genes were tested by molecular approaches in 450 HCV-positive patients with increasing severity of underlying liver diseases [including chronic infection (CHC), cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)], in 238 HCV-positive patients with lymphoproliferative diseases [such as cryoglobulinemia and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL)] and in 94 blood donors (BD).

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major cause of chronic liver disease, with approximately 71 million chronically infected individuals worldwide. Treatment of chronic hepatitis C has considerably improved in the last few years thanks to the introduction of direct-acting antivirals able to achieve sustained virological response in more than 95% of patients. Successful anti-HCV treatment can halt liver disease progression and solve the HCV-related extra-hepatic manifestations, eventually reducing liver-related and overall mortality.

Due to the so-called "antibiotic resistance crisis" new antibacterial agents are urgently sought to treat multidrug-resistant pathogens. A group of gold- or silver-based complexes, of general formula [M(PEt )X] (with M=Au or Ag, and X=Cl, Br or I), alongside with three complexes bearing a positive or negative charge-[Au(PEt ) ]Cl, K[Au(CN) ] and [Ag(PEt ) ]NO -were prepared and comparatively tested with auranofin on a representative panel of pathogens including Gram-positive, Gram-negative and Candida strains. Interestingly, all the gold and silver complexes tested were active on Gram-positive strains, with the gold complexes having greater efficacy.

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a hematopoietic stem cell (HSC)-driven neoplasia characterized by expression of the constitutively active tyrosine kinase BCR/Abl. CML therapy based on tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) is highly effective in inducing remission but not in targeting leukemia stem cells (LSCs), which sustain minimal residual disease and are responsible for CML relapse following discontinuation of treatment. Amyloidosis prognosis is often related to the onset of heart failure and a worsening that is concomitant with kidney-liver dysfunction; thus the Model for End-stage Liver disease (MELD) may be an ideal instrument to summarize renal-liver function. Ghrelin production occurs in the gastrointestinal tract with the greatest concentration in the fundus of the stomach, which accounts for approximately 75- 80% of circulating ghrelin levels. Desacyl ghrelin has been suggested to be involved in the regulation of energy homeostasis because of its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and to induce increased neuronal activity in the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus. The enzyme called ghrelin O-acyl transferase is able to acylate ghrelin and regulates the physiological functions of the final peptide acyl ghrelin.
