Background & Aims: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic liver disorder, tightly associated with obesity. The histological spectrum of the disease ranges from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis, with different stages of fibrosis, and fibrosis stage is the most significant predictor of mortality in NAFLD. Liver biopsy continues to be the gold standard for its diagnosis and reliable non-invasive diagnostic tools are unavailable.

TRIBE-2: a phase III, randomized, open-label, strategy trial in unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer patients by the GONO group.

Background: Chemotherapy plus bevacizumab is a standard first-line treatment for unresectable metastatic colorectal cancer patients. Different chemotherapy backbones may be chosen, including one to three drugs, based on patients' general conditions and comorbidities, treatments' objectives, and disease characteristics. TRIBE trial demonstrated a significant advantage in terms of progression-free survival and overall survival for FOLFOXIRI plus bevacizumab as compared with FOLFIRI plus bevacizumab.

Mathematical rationalization for the renal tubular transport: revised concepts.

The current emphasis on kinetics and in situ control of molecular exchanges, across the tubular membrane, has not been paralleled by corresponding improvements in our understanding of tubular behaviour at the macroscopic level of classical physiology. In this paper, we propose a mathematical rationalization of macroscopic tubular transport by means of a principal transport equation, originating from the law of mass action between substrate and carrier. The other equations, derived from the main one, demonstrate the possibility of distinguishing between transporters with low affinity and high capacity and transporters with high affinity and low capacity.

Imaging of liver transplantation.

Liver transplantation (LT) is the treatment of choice for end-stage chronic liver disease, fulminant liver failure and early stage hepatocellular carcinoma. As discussed in this review, state-of-the-art imaging modalities including ultrasonography (US), computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) play a pivotal role in the selection of patients and donors, as well as in early detection of those complications at risk of impairing graft function and/or survival. We also illustrate main imaging findings related to the wide spectrum of clinical problems raised by LT.

Weight gain after STN-DBS: The role of reward sensitivity and impulsivity.

Weight gain has been reported after deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS), a widely used treatment for Parkinson's disease (PD). This nucleus has been repeatedly found to be linked both to reward and to inhibitory control, two key aspects in the control of food intake. In this study, we assessed whether weight gain experienced by patients with PD after STN-DBS, might be due to an alteration of reward and inhibitory functions.

Background: Functional gastrointestinal disorders and migraine are both common causes of medical attention. We have previously shown an association between migraine and infant colic. In this case-control study, we aimed to establish whether there is an association between migraine and other functional gastrointestinal disorders in children and adolescents.

Background: Migraine is a common cause of headache in childhood. Several studies have investigated the association between migraine and atopic diseases, mostly in the adult population.

Can we predict new AF occurrence in single-chamber ICD patients? Insights from an observational investigation.

Background: Atrial tachyarrhythmias (AT/AF) have been associated with an increased risk of mortality, morbidity and ischemic stroke. Up to now, single chamber ICD diagnostics was not able to detect AT/AF, therefore the incidence of new onset AT/AF in patients with single chamber ICD is not known.

Objective: To evaluate incidence and predictors of AT/AF occurrence in patients with dual-chamber ICD with no pacing indications and no history of AT/AF that strictly mimic single chamber ICD recipient.

Prognostic factors in 868 advanced gastric cancer patients treated with second-line chemotherapy in the real world.

Background: Although second-line therapy is often considered for advanced gastric cancer patients, the optimal candidates are not well defined.

Methods: We retrospectively collected baseline parameters, tumour features, and treatment data for 868 advanced gastric cancer patients exposed to multiple treatment lines at 19 Italian centres. Cross-tables and chi-square tests were used to describe categorical features.

Efficacy of FOLFOXIRI plus bevacizumab in liver-limited metastatic colorectal cancer: A pooled analysis of clinical studies by Gruppo Oncologico del Nord Ovest.

Secondary resection is a chance of cure for a subgroup of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients with unresectable liver-limited disease. Medical treatment has a dual goal: to induce tumour shrinkage and to prevent disease relapse. The aims of the present analysis were to assess the efficacy of FOLFOXIRI plus bevacizumab in this setting, and to investigate whether this regimen could revert the poor prognosis of high-risk patients defined by clinical and molecular factors.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections: A review of the currently available treatment options.

This review is the result of discussions that took place at the 5th MRSA Working Group Consensus Meeting and explores the possible treatment options available for different types of infections due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), focusing on those antibiotics that could represent a valid alternative to vancomycin. In fact, whilst vancomycin remains a viable option, its therapy is moving towards individualised dosing. Other drugs, such as the new lipoglycopeptides (oritavancin, dalbavancin and telavancin) and fifth-generation cephalosporins (ceftaroline and ceftobiprole), are showing good in vitro potency and in vivo efficacy, especially for patients infected with micro-organisms with higher vancomycin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs).

Can multiparametric MRI replace Roach equations in staging prostate cancer before external beam radiation therapy?

Purpose: To investigate the agreement between Roach equations (RE) and multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) in assessing the T-stage of prostate cancer (PCa).

Materials And Methods: Seventy-three patients with biopsy-proven PCa and previous RE assessment prospectively underwent mpMRI on a 3.0T magnet before external beam radiation therapy (EBRT).

Quantitative Diffusion Tensor Imaging Analysis of Low-Grade Gliomas: From Preclinical Application to Patient Care.

Background: Preoperative diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) has recently been used to aid in the mapping of functional pathways to limit damage associated with resection of low-grade gliomas (LGGs).

Objective: To assess the predictive capacity of DTT as a biomarker of postoperative motor outcomes in patients with LGGs involving the corticospinal tract (CST). An Animal Model for the Juvenile Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis.

Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) are the hepatic manifestations of the metabolic syndrome; worrisome is the booming increase in pediatric age. To recreate the full spectrum of juvenile liver pathology and investigate the gender impact, male and female C57Bl/6 mice were fed with high fat diet plus fructose in the drinking water (HFHC) immediately after weaning (equal to 3-years old human), and disease progression followed for 16 weeks, until adults (equal to 30-years old human). 100% of subjects of both genders on HFHC diet developed steatosis in 4weeks, and some degree of fibrosis in 8weeks, with the 86% of males and 15% of females presenting a stage 2 fibrosis at 16weeks.

Promotion of flu vaccination among healthcare workers in an Italian academic hospital: An experience with tailored web tools.

Purpose: The aim of this point-prevalence study was to assess the occurrence of polypharmacy and hyperpolypharmacy and the risk of potentially inappropriate prescriptions (PIPs) among elderly and very elderly patients in different health-care settings of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in the North-East of Italy.

Methods: Prescription pattern of elderly (65-79 years) and very elderly (>79 years) patients in three different health-care settings [hospitals, general practitioners, and long-term care facilities (LTCFs)] was assessed in March 2014, and PIPs were assessed according to the Beers criteria. Other situations at potentially high risk were checked.
