Objective: Pregnancy may elicit a state of mild inflammation that might affect, either directly or indirectly, haematological parameters associated with systemic inflammation. In particular, both Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and Red blood cells Distribution Width (RDW) have been found to be elevated in complicated pregnancy. However, data regarding the association of these haematological parameters with common carotid artery (CCA) intima-media thickness (IMT) in healthy pregnancy are scanty.

[Timing of surgery in heart valve infective endocarditis].

The prevalence of valvular infective endocarditis (IE) is increasing and is burdened by high mortality and morbidity. Despite the higher risk, the surgical approach is superior to medical therapy alone, and over the years there has been a more aggressive attitude, with earlier indications for surgery. This article aims to review the available literature and the American and European guidelines in order to summarize the most appropriate surgical timing for valvular IE.

Sex differences in brain metabolites in anxiety and mood disorders.

Gender differences in mood and anxiety disorders are well-established. However, the neural basis of these differences is not clear yet, especially in terms of brain metabolism. Indeed, although several proton Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (¹H MRS) investigations reported different metabolic levels in both depression and anxiety disorders, which have been also linked to symptoms severity and response to treatment, the role of gender on these differences have not been explored yet.

Whether assessment of changes in myocardial strain by two-dimensional speckle-tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) can be of value in detecting BVZ-mediated cardiotoxicity at an earlier stage is not known. We investigated whether 2D-STE can non-invasively detect early evidence of cardiotoxicity in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients treated with BVZ.

Impact of diabetes on clinical outcome among elderly patients with acute coronary syndrome treated with percutaneous coronary intervention: insights from the ELDERLY ACS 2 trial.

Background: Despite recent improvements in percutaneous coronary revascularization and antithrombotic therapies for the treatment of acute coronary syndromes, the outcome is still unsatisfactory in high-risk patients, such as the elderly and patients with diabetes. The aim of the current study was to investigate the prognostic impact of diabetes on clinical outcome among patients included in the Elderly-ACS 2 trial, a randomized, open-label, blinded endpoint study carried out at 32 centers in Italy.

Methods: Our population is represented by 1443 patients included in the Elderly-ACS 2 trial.

False-positive electrocardiographic changes during exercise test in a patient with pectus excavatum.

Exercise-induced ST-segment changes simulating myocardial ischemia have been described in otherwise normal subjects during hyperventilation. We present the case of a 60-year-old man with pectus excavatum showing significant exercise-induced "pseudo-ischaemic" ST-segment changes with neither coronary artery disease nor anxiety-induced hyperventilation. We found no report of the possible causative role of a narrow antero-posterior chest diameter in inducing "pseudo-ischaemic" ST-segment changes during exercise stress test in the literature.

The calcium-to-phosphorous (Ca/P) ratio in the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism and hypoparathyroidism: a multicentric study.

Purpose: The diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) and chronic hypoparathyroidism (HypoPT) is still challenging, especially in patients asymptomatic or with non-classical phenotypes and for physicians not skilled in calcium-phosphorous (Ca-P) disorders. Background: Nivolumab was the first immune checkpoint inhibitor approved for previously treated advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Before its introduction in the market, nivolumab was made available to NSCLC patients through an expanded access program (EAP). Here we present the Italian cohort of patients with non-squamous NSCLC enrolled in a worldwide nivolumab EAP, with subgroup analyses involving elderly patients, patients with central nervous system (CNS) metastases and patients receiving nivolumab beyond progression.
