Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is an antimetabolite with a potent inhibitory effect on proliferation of T and B lymphocytes used since the early 1990s for the prevention of acute allograft rejection after organ transplant. MMF is also widely used for the treatment of a variety of rheumatic diseases (RDs) and their pulmonary involvement. Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a heterogeneous group of progressive fibrotic diseases of the lung, which is often secondary to RD and represents a major cause of morbidity and mortality.

Human Umbilical Cord: Information Mine in Sex-Specific Medicine.

Life (Basel)

January 2021

Dipartimento di Scienze Mediche, Chirurgiche e Sperimentali, Clinica Ostetrica e Ginecologica, Università degli Studi di Sassari, 07100 Sassari, Italy.

Biological differences between sexes should be considered in all stages of research, as sexual dimorphism starts in utero leading to sex-specific fetal programming. In numerous biomedical fields, there is still a lack of stratification by sex despite primary cultured cells retaining memory of the sex and of the donor. The sex of donors in biological research must be known because variations in cells and cellular components can be used as endpoints, biomarkers and/or targets of pharmacological studies.

Combined oral contraceptives modify the effect of smoking on inflammatory cellular indexes and endothelial function in healthy subjects.

Eur J Pharmacol

January 2021

Laboratorio Nazionale di Farmacologia e Medicina di Genere, Istituto Nazionale Biostrutture Biosistemi, 07100, Sassari, Italy.

Little information is available on the influence of sex in combination with smoking habits and combined oral contraceptives (COC) use on cellular inflammatory indexes such as neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR), derived NRL (dNLR), platelet/lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte/lymphocyte ratio (MLR), mean platelet volume/platelet count (MPV/PLT), aggregate inflammation systemic index (AISI), and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI), which are cost-effective biomarkers to assessing inflammation. Therefore, the effect of COC was studied alone or in association with smoking and compared with results from healthy COC-free women and men. Furthermore, the association of cellular inflammatory indexes with endothelial function (arginine (Arg), asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) and lipid peroxidation (malondialdehyde MDA) biomarkers was evaluated.

Air pollutants and risk of death due to COVID-19 in Italy.

Environ Res

January 2021

Department of Medical, Surgical and Experimental Sciences, University of Sassari, 07100, Sassari, Italy; Azienda Ospedaliero- Universitaria di Sassari, 07100, Sassari, Italy. Electronic address:

The present work aims to study the role of air pollutants in relation to the number of deaths per each Italian province affected by COVID-19. To do that, specific mortality from COVID-19 has been standardized for each Italian province and per age group (10 groups) ranging from 0 to 9 years to >90 years, based on the 2019 national population figures. The link between air pollutants and COVID-19 mortality among Italian provinces was studied implementing a linear regression model, whereas the wide set of variables were examined by means of LISA (Local Indicators of Spatial Autocorrelation), relating the spatial component of COVID-19 related data with a mix of environmental variables as explanatory variables.

Monofocal hepatocellular carcinoma: How much does size matter?

Liver Int

February 2021

Department of Surgery, Oncology and Gastroenterology, Gastroenterology Unit, University of Padova, Padova, Italy.

Background & Aims: According to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) staging system, monofocal hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is classified as early (BCLC A) irrespective of its size, even though controversies still exist regarding staging and treatment of large tumours. We aimed at evaluating the appropriate staging and treatment for large (>5 cm) monofocal (HCC).

Methods: From the Italian Liver Cancer database, we selected 924 patients with small early monofocal HCC (2-5 cm; SEM-HCC), 163 patients with larger tumours (>5 cm; LEM-HCC) and 1048 intermediate stage patients (BCLC B).

Role of Infections in the Pathogenesis of Rheumatoid Arthritis: Focus on Mycobacteria.

Microorganisms

September 2020

Department of Biomedical Sciences, Section of Microbiology and Virology, University of Sassari, Viale San Pietro 43b, 07100 Sassari, Italy.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic inflammatory autoimmune disease characterized by chronic erosive polyarthritis. A complex interaction between a favorable genetic background, and the presence of a specific immune response against a broad-spectrum of environmental factors seems to play a role in determining susceptibility to RA. Among different pathogens, (including subspecies , MAP), and (EBV), have extensively been proposed to promote specific cellular and humoral response in susceptible individuals, by activating pathways linked to RA development.
