Importance: Evidence suggests that prophylactic abdominal drainage after gastrectomy for cancer may reduce postoperative morbidity and hospital stay but this evidence comes from small studies with a high risk of bias. Further research is needed to determine whether drains safely meet their primary purpose of identifying and managing postoperative intraperitoneal collections without the need for reoperation or additional percutaneous drainage.
Objective: To determine whether avoiding routine abdominal drainage increased postoperative invasive procedures.

Background And Objectives: to identify predictors of progression to refractory status epilepticus (RSE) using a machine learning technique.
Methods: Consecutive patients aged ≥ 14 years with SE registered in a 9-years period at Modena Academic Hospital were included in the analysis. We evaluated the risk of progression to RSE using logistic regression and a machine learning analysis by means of classification and regression tree analysis (CART) to develop a predictive model of progression to RSE.

Background: Breast units (BUs) provide breast cancer (BC) care, including prevention, treatment, and genetic assessment. Genetic research has highlighted BRCA1/2 mutations as key hereditary BC risk factors. BRCA testing is crucial for personalized treatment and prevention strategies.

Background And Aim: VETC (vessel that encapsulate tumor cluster) is a peculiar vascular phenotype observed in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), associated with distant metastases and poor outcome. VETC has been linked to the Tie2/Ang2 axis and is characterized by lymphocytes poor (cold) tumor microenvironment (TME). In this setting the role of Tumor Associated Macrophages (TAMs) has never been explored.

Treatment with direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) is effective and safe. However, bleeding complications still occur. Whether DOAC level measurement may further improve treatment efficacy and safety is still an open issue.

Objective: This article reports on the results of an analysis of metaphorical language used by patients diagnosed with advanced cancer and their caregivers receiving early palliative care (EPC).
Methods: Data were collected through a pen-and-paper questionnaire on respondents' perceptions of the disease, its treatment and their idea of death, before and after receiving EPC. The data were analysed by identifying all metaphorical uses of language, following the 'metaphor identification procedure' proposed by the Praggjelaz Group.

Background: Immunotherapies exhibit peculiar cancer response patterns in contrast to chemotherapy and targeted therapy. Some patients experience disease response after initial progression or durable responses after treatment interruption. In clinical practice, immune checkpoint inhibitors may be continued after radiological progression if clinical benefit is observed.

this study aimed to evaluate the role of early airway management and intubation in status epilepticus (SE) with out-of-hospital onset. We included all patients with out-of-hospital SE onset referred to the emergency department of the Academic Hospital of Modena between 2013 and 2021. Patients were compared according to out-of-hospital airway management (intubation versus non-intubation) and a propensity score was performed for clinical variables unevenly distributed between the two groups.

Although effective and safe, treatment with direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) in atrial fibrillation (AF) is still associated with thrombotic complications. Whether the measurement of DOAC levels may improve treatment efficacy is an open issue. We carried out the observational, prospective, multicenter Measure and See (MAS) study.

In the advanced cancer setting, low psychological functioning is a common symptom and its deleterious impact on health outcomes is well established. Yet, the beneficial role of positive psychological well-being (PPWB) on several clinical conditions has been demonstrated. Early palliative care (EPC) is a recent value-based model consisting of the early integration of palliative care into standard care for solid tumors and hematologic malignancies.

Background And Purpose: Long-term consequences after status epilepticus (SE) represent an unsettled issue. We investigated the incidence of remote unprovoked seizures (RS) and drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) in a cohort of first-ever SE survivors.
Methods: A retrospective, observational, and monocentric study was conducted on adult patients (age ≥ 14 years) with first SE who were consecutively admitted to the Modena Academic Hospital, Italy (September 2013-March 2022).

Objective: Epilepsy surgery can be proposed as a treatment option in people with focal epilepsy, however satisfaction with epilepsy surgery in Italy remains unknown. We aimed to validate in Italy an instrument to measure patient satisfaction with epilepsy surgery, the 19-item Epilepsy Surgery Satisfaction Questionnaire (ESSQ-19).
Methods: Consecutive patients with epilepsy who received epilepsy surgery between the years 2018-2021 at Modena Academic Hospital were recruited and provided clinical and demographic data.

Introduction: Studies using scalp EEG have shown that slow waves (0.5-4 Hz), the most prominent hallmark of NREM sleep, undergo relevant changes from childhood to adulthood, mirroring brain structural modifications and the acquisition of cognitive skills. Here we used simultaneous EEG-fMRI to investigate the cortical and subcortical correlates of slow waves in school-age children and determine their relative developmental changes.

Despite the arising interest in three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction models from 2D imaging, their diffusion and perception among urologists have been scarcely explored. The aim of the study is to report the results of an international survey investigating the use of such tools among urologists of different backgrounds and origins. Beyond demographics, the survey explored the degree to which 3D models are perceived to improve surgical outcomes, the procedures mostly making use of them, the settings in which those tools are mostly applied, the surgical steps benefiting from 3D reconstructions and future perspectives of improvement.
