Objective: The introduction of oral disease-modifying drugs (DMDs) in addition to the available, injectable, ones for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) could be expected to improve medication persistence due to a greater acceptability of the route of administration. The aim of the study was to compare the proportion of patients discontinuing injectable DMDs (interferon beta 1a/1b, pegylated interferon, glatiramer acetate) with those discontinuing oral DMDs (dimethylfumarate and teriflunomide) during an observation period of at least 12 months. Secondary aims were to compare the time to discontinuation and the reasons for discontinuation between the two groups and to explore the demographic and clinical factors associated with DMD discontinuation.

Percutaneous treatment of chronic total occlusions (CTO) is one of the major challenges in contemporary interventional cardiology. These lesions are identified in 15% to 30% of all patients referred for coronary angiography. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of CTOs is technically challenging and requires familiarity with advanced interventional techniques as well as specialty equipment.

Women are often excluded/underrepresented in clinical trials; sometimes, the number of men/women participants or separate analysis by sex are not reported. A robust body of evidence demonstrated that several life-threatening acute cardiovascular diseases, for example, acute myocardial infarction, sudden cardiac death, cardiac arrest, rupture or dissection of aortic aneurysms, and stroke, exhibit a circadian periodicity with a morning peak. An analysis of 20 years of chronobiologic studies (44% of them, accounting for 85% of total cases, with separate analysis by sex) confirmed that morning hours are a critical time of onset of acute cardiovascular diseases in men and women.

The frequency of definitive childlessness in women with multiple sclerosis (MS) may be higher than in the general population. MS may also affect decisions on the delivery procedure and on breast-feeding issues. Aim of the study was to assess the frequency of childlessness and its possible causes, the proportion of cesarean deliveries (CD), and the frequency of breast-feeding in patients and controls who have reached the end of their reproductive period.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients have increased brain iron deposition with higher oxidative stress (OxS). These two features can be caused by an inefficient removal of free iron from extracellular compartment. Ferroxidase activity (Feox) exerted by ceruloplasmin (FeoxCp) and by other molecules (FeoxII) appears to have a central role in this process.

The most frequent BCR-ABL1 fusion transcripts in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) are the e13a2 (b2a2) and the e14a2 (b3a2) ones. In the imatinib era few studies addressing the prognostic significance of the BCR-ABL1 transcript type in early chronic phase CML have been published. Overall, these studies suggest that in e14a2 patients the response to imatinib is faster and deeper.

During the two last decades, the interest in the role of Vitamin D (VD) in allergic disease has increased. Apart from the well-known actions of VD in bone metabolism, recent studies suggested its possible role as an immune-modulator in allergy. This study, conducted over the Italian territory, evaluated the possible correlations between VD serum level and diagnosed allergic diseases (rhinitis / asthma, food allergy, atopic dermatitis).

Patients with asymptomatic heart failure (HF; stage A and B) are characterized by maladaptive left ventricular (LV) remodeling. Classic 4-group classification of remodeling considers only LV mass index and relative wall thickness as variables. Complex remodeling classification (CRC) includes also LV end-diastolic volume index.

Background: Although beneficial in clinical practice, the INtubate-SURfactant-Extubate (IN-SUR-E) method is not successful in all preterm neonates with respiratory distress syndrome, with a reported failure rate ranging from 19 to 69 %. One of the possible mechanisms responsible for the unsuccessful IN-SUR-E method, requiring subsequent re-intubation and mechanical ventilation, is the inability of the preterm lung to achieve and maintain an "optimal" functional residual capacity. The importance of lung recruitment before surfactant administration has been demonstrated in animal studies showing that recruitment leads to a more homogeneous surfactant distribution within the lungs.

Background: Autoantibodies to apolipoprotein A-1 (anti-ApoA-1 IgG) were shown to predict major adverse cardiovascular events and promote atherogenesis. However, their potential relationship with clinical disability and ischaemic lesion volume after acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) remains unexplored.
Materials And Methods: We included n = 76 patients admitted for AIS and we investigated whether baseline serum anti-ApoA-1 IgG levels could predict (i) AIS-induced clinical disability [assessed by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS)], and (ii) AIS-related ischaemic lesion volume [assessed by Computed Tomography (CT)].
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the optimal duration of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after percutaneous coronary intervention, especially in the era of second-generation drug-eluting stents (DES). The work was conducted from November 2014 to April 2015. All randomized controlled trials comparing short (<12 months) versus long (≥12 months) DAPT in patients treated with second-generation DES were analyzed.
