Article Synopsis
  • Vitamin D deficiency is a significant public health issue in Europe, affecting not just the elderly but also those aged 50-70 years across both genders.
  • A recent survey involving 870 subjects in Italy found that dietary vitamin D intake was alarmingly low, with average daily intakes of 5.05 μg for females and 6.25 μg for males, which is below the recommended average.
  • The data revealed a trend where vitamin D intake decreases with age, indicating that older adults are particularly at risk for potential hypovitaminosis due to inadequate dietary consumption.

The historical restriction of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) has been lifted by certified MRI-conditional systems in recent years. Mixed-brand CIED systems consisting of a generator from one manufacturer and at least one lead from another manufacturer are not certified for MRI. We evaluated the temporal trend in the prevalence of mixed-brand systems in the era of MRI-conditional systems.

Introduction: In patients with Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) related to primary C1 inhibitor deficiency (C1INH), the defective clearance of immune complexes and apoptotic materials along with impairment of normal humoral response potentially leads to autoimmunity. Few studies report evidence on autoimmune diseases in C1INH-HAE, but no large population studies focus on rare connective tissue diseases (RCTDs). We aim at evaluating for the first time prevalence and distribution of RCTDs - Systemic Lupus Erytematosus (SLE), primary Sjogren Syndrome (SjS), primary antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), Systemic Sclerosis (SSc), and mixed connective tissue diseases (MCTD) in a large Italian cohort of C1INH-HAE patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the performance of ultrathin drug-eluting stents (DES) versus thin-strut DES and drug-eluting balloons (DEB) in treating in-stent restenosis (ISR) in patients.
  • Results show that ultrathin DES significantly lowers the risk of adverse events, including cardiac death and need for revascularization, when compared to both thin-strut DES and DEBs after three years of follow-up.
  • Additionally, in patients with diffuse ISR, ultrathin DES outperformed thin-strut DES in reducing risks of target lesion revascularization (TLR) and target vessel revascularization (TVR).

Self-Perceived Competencies and Attitudes on Palliative Care in Undergraduate Nursing Students: A Multicenter Descriptive Study.

Nurs Rep

September 2024

Department of Health Promotion, Maternal and Infant Care, Internal Medicine and Medical Specialties (PROMISE), University of Palermo, 90143 Palermo, Italy.

Caring for the dying can generate anxiety and emotional distress, particularly in nursing students, and perceived competence could play a crucial role in enabling nurses to perform their duties with greater confidence. Unfortunately, few studies describe the relationship between students' nursing attitudes and perceived self-efficacy in palliative care (PC). To overcome this gap, this survey aimed to assess the attitudes towards dying patients and the perceived competence of nursing students in palliative care at different universities in the south of Italy.
