Objective: Abdominal cystic formations in neonates are rare entities and often diagnostic suspicion arises before birth as a result of routine ultrasonographic scans carried out during pregnancy. The aim of this study is to report the authors' experience with giant floating abdominal cysts in females.

Study Design: The cases of antenatal abdominal cysts in females detected on ultrasound at the Department of Antenatal Diagnosis (Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Integrata, Verona, Italy) of the authors' institution between May 2005 and May 2013 were recorded together with their clinical and surgical findings.

A twin pair affected by juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML) with the same somatic PTPN11 mutation and abnormal chromosome 7 in bone marrow samples but distinct prognostic gene expression signatures, received a matched-unrelated donor and matched-unrelated cord blood transplant, respectively. Both twins fully engrafted, but after 6 months, the twin with an acute-myeloid-like (AML-like) signature at diagnosis rejected the graft and had an autologous reconstitution. A second transplant with an unrelated 5/6-HLA-matched-loci cord blood performed after 4 months from rejection was unsuccessful.

Aim: Osteotomies are performed in oral surgery with five kinds of cutting instruments: 1) burs (Tungsten carbide cylindric burs), 2-3) ultrasound Piezosurgery (type I and II), 4-5) and lasers (Er:YAG; Er,Cr:YSGG). This study compares the quality of cutting of every single instruments, evaluating accuracy (length, thickness, depth and morphology), velocity (number of passages and time) and entity of damage.

Methods: In vitro experiments with ten osteotomies were performed on one-hundred of cow ribs with each instrument.

We relate the case of a 17 year old girl with active pulmonary tuberculosis which mimicked a severe community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) associated to rhabdomyolysis. This report underlines the importance of excluding the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in any case of CAP which does not respond to standard antibiotic therapy, remembering that the empiric use of fluoroquinolones could delay the initiation of anti-tuberculosis treatment. This is, to our knowledge, the first description of a case of pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with rhabdomyolysis in a young girl without comorbidities.

Section of Infectious Diseases, Department of Pathology and Diagnostics, Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Integrata, Policlinico G B Rossi, Verona, Italy.

Cell-mediated immune response plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of tuberculosis (TB). We retrospectively evaluated lymphocyte subpopulations in 177 active TB patients compared to 93 healthy controls, finding a relevant decrease in total lymphocytes and CD8+ cells. Conversely, activated human leukocyte antigen (HLA-DR+) and CD4+CD57+ cells were higher in the TB group.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a pathology whose control is still unsatisfactory at global level. Traditional diagnostic techniques for active TB diagnosis are inadequate: the diagnostic gold standard is the cultural exam which suffers from lengthy processing and requires highly specialized laboratories. This study analyzed the diagnostic sensitivity of the tuberculin skin test (TST) and QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-IT) in 135 active, microbiologically confirmed TB cases.
