Brachyury is a transcription factor which is required for posterior mesoderm formation and differentiation as well as for notochord development during embryogenesis. Due to its expression in the neoplastic cells of chordoma, a malignant tumour deriving from notochordal remnants, but not in tumors showing a similar histology, brachyury has been proposed as a diagnostic marker of this neoplasia. Though commonly considered a hallmark of chordoma, the expression of brachyury has been also documented in the stromal cells of hemangioblastoma (HBL), a slow growing tumor which may involve the central nervous system (CNS) and, rarely, the kidney.

Accessory mitral valve tissue (AMVT) is a rare congenital cardiac anomaly sometimes responsible for left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction. It is diagnosed during both neonate-childhood and adult periods in patients usually symptomatic for dyspnoea, chest pain, palpitations, fatigue, or syncope. Nevertheless, AMVT is often an incidental finding.

Oral adverse reactions due to cinnamon-flavoured chewing gums consumption.

Oral Dis

October 2014

Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, University of Messina, Messina, Italy; Operative Unit of Clinical Pharmacology, Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Policlinico 'G. Martino', Messina, Italy.

Cinnamon-flavoured products (toothpaste, chewing gum, food, candy and mouthwash) can cause oral adverse reactions; among these, the most common is contact stomatitis (cinnamon contact stomatitis, CCS). Signs and symptoms of contact allergic reactions affecting the oral mucosa can mimic other common oral disorders, making diagnosis difficult. As CCS may be more prevalent than believed and its clinical features can frequently determine misdiagnosis, we reviewed case reports and case series of oral adverse reactions due to cinnamon-containing chewing gums, emphasizing clinical aspects, diagnostic and management procedures.

Department of Human Pathology, University of Messina, Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria "Policlinico G.Martino", Via Consolare Valeria, 98125 Messina, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein found in various human bodily fluids, notably in milk and colostrum, and is recognized for its multifunctional roles.
  • Numerous studies since the late 1970s have explored LF's distribution in human tissues, particularly in normal and cancerous tissues.
  • This review compiles existing literature and 25 years of original research to analyze LF's immunohistochemical presence in tumors, aiming to understand its potential role in cancer development and pathology across different tissues.

By immunohistochemistry, lactoferrin (LF) has been extensively investigated in human neoplastic tissues; moreover, LF is able to promote bone growth in a murine model. Until now, no systematic studies on human osteocartilagineous fetal samples have been performed in comparison to corresponding neoplastic specimens to verify if LF may represent an oncofetal marker in this field of pathology. The mere intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement and the visual field (VF) examination do not allow early primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) diagnosis. At present, the morphological and morphometric analysis of the optic disk is considered very important for an early diagnosis and follow-up of the disease. The recent introduction of laser systems equipped with new polarimetry techniques (GDx) and confocal tomography (HRT) allows an objective, quantitative, and reproducible evaluation of the morphometry and morphology of the optic disk and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL).

Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (voiding urosonography) of vesicoureteral reflux: state of the art.

Radiol Med

December 2007

Dipartimento di Scienze Radiologiche, Università degli Studi di Messina, Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Policlinico G. Martino, Via Consolare Valeria 2, Messina, Italy.

Three methods are currently used to identify vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) in children, namely, radiographic voiding cystourethrography, radionuclide voiding cystography and, more recently, echo-enhanced voiding urosonography (VUS). Recent advances in tissue-harmonic and contrast-specific imaging techniques, together with the development of second-generation contrast agents, have improved the potential of ultrasonography both in the diagnosis and grading of VUR in children. Today, VUS is able to accurately assess the grade of reflux and the state of the urethra, previously considered fundamental limitations to the extensive use of this technique.

The smoke of cigarettes represents an important accelerator of the aging process, both directly through complex mechanisms mediated prevalently by excessive formation of free radicals, and indirectly by favoring the appearance of various pathologies in which smoke is a recognized risk factor. This means that smoke compromises not only life expectancy, but also the quality of the life, favoring the occurrence of non-autosufficiency. Smoking is an important risk factor for many diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.

[Laparoscopy in traumatic abdominal emergencies].

Chir Ital

November 2006

Unità Operativa Complessa di Chirurgia Generale e Mininvasiva, Dipartimento di Scienze Chirurgiche, Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Policlinico G. Martino, Università degli Studi di Messina.

Over the past few years the laparoscopic technique has changed most of the concepts of traditional surgery and is today the standard approach in elective surgery for many pathologies requiring surgery. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for emergency surgery, though much progress has been made in this field, too. The Authors examine the most important abdominal diseases that can be diagnosed and, possibly, treated by the laparoscopic approach in the emergency setting, concluding that laparoscopic management of such conditions is a feasible proposition in many cases.
