Volar Plate Interposition Arthroplasty of the Proximal Interphalangeal Joint: A Novel, Modified Malerich's Technique.

The choice of prosthetic or autologous reconstruction for proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint arthroplasty in degenerative osteoarthritis represents a challenge for hand surgeons, especially in consideration of complications and patient's quality of life. We report the case of a 49-year-old woman who developed diffuse arthritis of the finger joints, especially at the PIP joint of the third right finger. Radiographs showed destruction of the PIP joint, large osteophytes, marked narrowing of joint space, severe sclerosis, and deformation of bone contour.

Fibrinogen Depletion Coagulopathy Predicts Major Bleeding After Thrombolysis for Ischemic Stroke: A Multicenter Study.

Background: Symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) and major bleeding can be fatal complications of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) for acute ischemic stroke. We investigated the impact of early fibrinogen depletion after IVT on major bleeding events.

Methods: This multicenter observational prospective cohort study enrolled 1678 consecutive patients receiving IVT for acute ischemic stroke at 6 Italian centers, undergoing fibrinogen concentration assessment at baseline, 2 hours and 6 hours after IVT.

Development and Implementation of the AIDA International Registry for Patients With VEXAS Syndrome.

Objective: The aim of this paper is to present the AutoInflammatory Disease Alliance (AIDA) international Registry dedicated to Vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, Autoinflammatory, Somatic (VEXAS) syndrome, describing its design, construction, and modalities of dissemination.

Methods: This Registry is a clinical, physician-driven, population- and electronic-based instrument designed for the retrospective and prospective collection of real-life data. Data gathering is based on the Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) tool and is intended to obtain real-world evidence for daily patients' management.

Xeroderma Pigmentosum: A Genetic Condition Skin Cancer Correlated-A Systematic Review.

Background: Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of UV radiation-induced damage repair that is characterized by photosensitivity and a propensity for developing, among many others, skin cancers at an early age. This systematic review focused on the correlation between the clinical, pathological, and genetic aspects of XP and skin cancer.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted through a literature search of online databases PubMed, Cochrane Library, SciELO, and Google Scholar.

Intensity-modulated radiotherapy does not induce volumetric changes of the Bichat fat pad in nasopharyngeal cancer.

Purpose: To evaluate morphological and functional changes in the Bichat fat pad (BFP) after curative concurrent chemoradiotherapy in nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) patients.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the volumetric, metabolic, and dosimetry parameters of BFPs in 7 NPC patients who underwent intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) between 2015 and 2020. Inclusion criteria were i) histologically confirmed diagnosis of NPC, ii) follow-up period of at least 12 months, iii) no history of previous irradiation or surgery in the maxillofacial area, and ìv) availability of pre- and posttreatment MRI and F‑FDG PET-CT performed in our Institution.

Molecular Fingerprinting of the Omicron Variant Genome of SARS-CoV-2 by SERS Spectroscopy.

The continuing accumulation of mutations in the RNA genome of the SARS-CoV-2 virus generates an endless succession of highly contagious variants that cause concern around the world due to their antibody resistance and the failure of current diagnostic techniques to detect them in a timely manner. Raman spectroscopy represents a promising alternative to variants detection and recognition techniques, thanks to its ability to provide a characteristic spectral fingerprint of the biological samples examined under all circumstances. In this work we exploit the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties of a silver dendrite layer to explore, for the first time to our knowledge, the distinctive features of the Omicron variant genome.

The Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy: A Focus on Definitions for Clinical Nephrologists.

About 5-10% of pregnancies are complicated by one of the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. The women who experience these disorders have a greater risk of having or developing kidney diseases than women with normotensive pregnancies. While international guidelines do not provide clear indications for a nephrology work-up after pregnancy, this is increasingly being advised by nephrology societies.

First-Line Osimertinib in Patients with EGFR-Mutant Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: Outcome and Safety in the Real World: FLOWER Study.

Background: Osimertinib became the standard treatment for patients with untreated EGFR-mutant advanced non-small cell lung cancer (aNSCLC) following results reported in the phase III randomized FLAURA trial. Because of strict exclusion criteria, patient populations included in pivotal trials are only partially representative of real-world patients.

Methods: We designed an observational, prospective, multicenter study enrolling patients with EGFR-mutant aNSCLC receiving first-line osimertinib to evaluate effectiveness, safety, and progression patterns in the real-world.

Statin use and 30-day mortality in patients with acute symptomatic pulmonary embolism.

Background: Statins possess antithrombotic and profibrinolytic properties. The association between statin use and short-term outcomes in patients with acute pulmonary embolism (PE) remains unknown.

Methods: We used the data from the Registro Informatizado de Pacientes con Enfermedad TromboEmbólica registry to compare the 30-day all-cause mortality in patients with acute PE according to the use of statins.

CT-urography: a nationwide survey by the Italian Board of Urogenital Radiology.

Computed tomography-urography is currently the imaging modality of choice for the assessment of the whole urinary tract, giving the possibility to detect and characterize benign and malignant conditions. In particular, computed tomography-urography takes advantage from an improved visualization of the urinary collecting system due to acquisition of delayed scan obtained after excretion of intravenous contrast medium from the kidneys. Nevertheless, the remaining scans are of great help for identification, characterization, and staging of urological tumors.

Treatment-free remission (TFR) has become a primary therapeutic goal in CML and is also considered feasible by international guidelines. TKIs dose reduction is often used in real-life practice to reduce adverse events, although its impact on TFR is still a matter of debate. This study aimed to explore the attitude of Italian hematologists towards prescribing TKIs at reduced doses and its impact on TFR.

Assessment of Intra and Extra-Hospital Outcome after Takotsubo Syndrome in a Single-Center Population.

Objectives: To evaluate short- and long-term outcome in a single prospective cohort of Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) patients, trying to early identify those with better prognosis and to assess the prevalence of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) recovery over time.

Methods: Forty-nine patients prospectively enrolled underwent to assessment of demographic, clinical, and echocardiographic characteristics, and later were followed to identify the outcomes during a mean follow-up (FU) of 93 months. At the end of the FU phase, a subgroup of patients underwent to a clinical and echocardiographic re-evaluation.

Assessment of intravitreal anti-VEGF drugs and dexamethasone for retinal diseases in real world setting: A multi-centre prospective study from Southern Italy.

Describe drug utilisation and clinical outcomes of intravitreal anti-VEGF drug and dexamethasone use in the real-world setting in Southern Italy using data from multi-centre study of retinal disease. Clinical data of retinal disease patients treated with anti-VEGF drugs and dexamethasone implant in 6 out-patient ophthalmology centres from Southern Italy were collected by means of an electronic case report form. Patients receiving at least one intravitreal injection/implant of the study drugs were followed for up to two years and described in terms of demographics and clinical characteristics.

Quality of life in patients with allergic and immunologic skin diseases: in the eye of the beholder.

Allergic and immunologic skin diseases negatively impact the quality of life (QoL) of affected patients with detrimental consequences. Nonetheless, in everyday clinical practice the evaluation of QoL is often overlooked. Considering the increasing prevalence of atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, hereditary angioedema, cutaneous mastocytosis, and urticaria, it is essential to determine the effects of allergic and immunologic skin diseases on QoL.

Clinical course and risk factors for severe COVID-19 among Italian patients with cystic fibrosis: a study within the Italian Cystic Fibrosis Society.

Purpose: To describe the clinical course of COVID-19 in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) and to identify risk factors for severe COVID-19.

Methods: We conducted a prospective study within the Italian CF Society. CF centers collected baseline and follow-up data of patients with virologically confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection between March 2020 and June 2021.
