Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, University of Messina, Messina, Italy; Operative Unit of Clinical Pharmacology, Azienda Ospedaliera Universitaria Policlinico 'G. Martino', Messina, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Cinnamon-flavoured products like toothpaste, gum, and candy can cause oral issues, particularly cinnamon contact stomatitis (CCS), which leads to allergic reactions in the mouth.
  • Diagnosing CCS is challenging because its symptoms can resemble other oral disorders, often resulting in misdiagnosis.
  • The review suggests a unified diagnostic algorithm for CCS and promotes a multidisciplinary approach involving dentists, dermatologists, and allergists for better management of patients.

Autonomic function can be impaired in many disorders in which sympathetic, parasympathetic, and enteric arms of the autonomic nervous system are affected. Signs and symptoms of autonomic involvement are related to impairment of cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, urogenital, thermoregulatory, sudomotor, and pupillomotor autonomic functions. Availability of noninvasive, sensitive, and reproducible tests can help to recognize these disorders and to better understand specific mechanisms of some, potentially treatable, immune-mediated autonomic neuropathies.
