This study investigates the efficacy of ozone treatment combined with different packaging methods on the preservation of Taiwanese domestically produced beef during refrigerated storage. The preservation of fresh beef is crucial for ensuring food safety and quality; we do not know whether changing the packaging method can mitigate the negative effects of ozone on meat and even enhance its positive impact. Beef samples were treated with ozone and packaged using the vacuum or PVDC-tray methods, then stored at 4 °C for 7 days.

Understanding the mechanism underlying the evolution of knuckle-walking in African great apes but not in humans may provide important implications about the origin and evolution of human bipedal locomotion. In this study, aiming to reveal possible structural adaptations of the chimpanzee's forearm and hand musculature related to knuckle-walking, we measure the passive elastic moment of the chimpanzee's and orangutan's wrist as it was rotated into extension, immobilizing the metacarpophalangeal joint at three different positions: extended (as in knuckle-walking), flexed (as in fist-walking), and an intermediate position. Our findings demonstrate that when the metacarpophalangeal joints are extended, the rigidity of the wrist joint in the extended direction increases.

Mice fed a diet containing an adequate amount of ω-3 fatty acids (ω-3 Adq) or a deficient diet (ω-3 Def) were irradiated with ultraviolet-B (UV-B) and were measured daily changes in transepidermal water loss (TEWL). TEWL was significantly increased in ω-3 Def mice with repeated UV-B irradiation, but this increase was significantly reduced in ω-3 Adq mice. The epidermal layers revealed thickening of the spinous and basal layers induced by UV-B irradiation in both groups.

Although phytochemicals are plant-derived toxins that are primarily produced as a form of defense against insects or microbes, several lines of study have demonstrated that the phytochemical, quercetin, has several beneficial biological actions for human health, including antioxidant and inflammatory effects without side effects. Quercetin is a flavonoid that is widely found in fruits and vegetables. Since recent studies have demonstrated that quercetin can modulate neuronal excitability in the nervous system, including nociceptive sensory transmission via mechanoreceptors and voltage-gated ion channels, and inhibit the cyclooxygenase-2-cascade, it is possible that quercetin could be a complementary alternative medicine candidate; specifically, a therapeutic agent against nociceptive and pathological pain.
