Fertility control has traditionally been applied in zoos to control captive populations, and reversible contraception is important. However, contraceptive methods for male bears have not been reported. We aimed to establish a reversible contraceptive for male brown bears by investigating the effects of a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) vaccine (Improvac®) that was developed for the immune castration of pigs.

Although phytochemicals are plant-derived toxins that are primarily produced as a form of defense against insects or microbes, several lines of study have demonstrated that the phytochemical, quercetin, has several beneficial biological actions for human health, including antioxidant and inflammatory effects without side effects. Quercetin is a flavonoid that is widely found in fruits and vegetables. Since recent studies have demonstrated that quercetin can modulate neuronal excitability in the nervous system, including nociceptive sensory transmission via mechanoreceptors and voltage-gated ion channels, and inhibit the cyclooxygenase-2-cascade, it is possible that quercetin could be a complementary alternative medicine candidate; specifically, a therapeutic agent against nociceptive and pathological pain.

Three-dimensional (3D)-printed models of bones are a convenient and durable alternative to real bone specimens, and they have been used in anatomy laboratories. It is necessary to identify the precise advantages of 3D-printed models from all perspectives; not only the improvement in students' knowledge of anatomy but also the students' assessment of such models. Here, students of veterinary medicine and animal science evaluated the reproducibility and effectiveness of 3D-printed models as a learning tool by completing our questionnaires, with a focus on their understanding of the skull-morphological differences among dog breeds.

In 2004, the equine-origin H3N8 canine influenza virus (CIV) first caused an outbreak with lethal cases in racing greyhounds in Florida, USA, and then spread to domestic dogs nationwide. Although transmission of this canine virus to humans has not been reported, it is important to evaluate its zoonotic potential because of the high contact opportunities between companion dogs and humans. To gain insight into the interspecies transmissibility of H3N8 CIV, we tested its adaptability to human respiratory A549 cells through successive passages.

Fecal corticosterone metabolite (FCM) concentrations, which can be determined noninvasively, have recently been explored as a stress indicator in birds. In our study, we measured FCM concentrations in penguins under nonmolting or molting conditions, cool or hot season, diseased condition, and incubation period. These measurements were conducted in an aquarium that housed king penguins, gentoo penguins, and African penguins.

The persistence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) among wildlife populations poses a potential risk for the emergence of novel variants. Therefore, monitoring SARS-CoV-2 infections in animals is crucial. As urban rodents live in close proximity to human habitats, there is a concern that they may be a potential source of zoonoses.

Virtual reality (VR)-based training has shown some benefits in medical education, supporting skill acquisition, and helping reduce anxiety in real-world settings. However, the use of VR simulators in veterinary education remains limited. This study aimed to introduce a VR simulator to support veterinarian training in canine anaesthesia induction and endotracheal intubation.

Zinc is an essential trace element for various physiological functions, including reproduction. The influx/efflux of zinc ions is regulated by zinc transporters (Zip1-14 and ZnT1-8, 10). However, the precise roles of zinc transporters and zinc dynamics in reproductive functions are unknown.

Objective: Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) is a rare, locally aggressive, benign neoplasm of unknown etiology. Because of its aggressive clinical behavior and locally destructive or infiltrative features, it may be mistaken for a malignant tumor. Approximately 5%-44% of extrapulmonary IPT occur in the head and neck, primarily affecting the orbit.

Dasatinib is one of the second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors used to treat chronic myeloid leukemia and has a broad target spectrum, including KIT, PDGFR, and SRC family kinases. Due to its broad drug spectrum, dasatinib has been reported at the basic research level to improve athletic performance by eliminating senescent cell removal and to have an effect on muscle diseases such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy, but its effect on myoblasts has not been investigated. In this study, we evaluated the effects of dasatinib on skeletal muscle both under normal conditions and in the regenerating state.

Non-neoplastic bone marrow disorders are main causes of non-regenerative anemia in dogs. Despite the high incidence of the diseases, their molecular pathophysiology has not been elucidated. We previously reported that Miniature Dachshund (MD) was a predisposed breed to be diagnosed with non-neoplastic bone marrow disorders in Japan, and immunosuppressive treatment-resistant MDs showed higher number of platelets and morphological abnormalities in peripheral blood cells.
