Reduction in plant height is generally associated with an increase in lodging resistance, drought tolerance and grain yield of wheat worldwide. Historically, a significant increase in grain yield was observed through the introduction of semi-dwarf wheat varieties utilizing the gibberellic acid-insensitive genes ( or ). The gibberellic acid sensitive (GA-sensitive) reduced height () genes are available that are alternatives to gibberellic acid insensitive (GA-insensitive) genes, having a neutral effect on coleoptile length seedling vigor suggesting their potential in using alone or in combination with GA-insensitive genes to improve grain yield and drought tolerance in wheat.

Phosphorous (P) fixation in alkaline calcareous soils is a serious concern worldwide and acidified-biochar application has been proposed to improve the agronomic benefits of applied P. The present study aims to improve understanding of P transformation process in an alkaline soil following different biochar amendments (rice-husk biochar (RHB), sugarcane-bagasse biochar (SWB) and wheat-straw biochar (WSB)), chemically engineered (acidification with 1 N HCl or washing with distilled water (pristine biochar)) along with or without P at 60 mg kg. A pot experiment was conducted with three biochars (RHB, SWB, WSB) and control, two chemical modifications (acidic and pristine), and two P-levels (without or with P).

Interrogations of local germplasm and landraces can offer a foundation and genetic basis for drought tolerance in wheat. Potential of drought tolerance in a panel of 30 wheat genotypes including varieties, local landraces, and wild crosses were explored under drought stress (DS) and well-watered (WW) conditions.
