The role of hypoxia inducible factor-1 alpha in bypassing oncogene-induced senescence.

PLoS One

December 2015

Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.

Oncogene induced senescence (OIS) is a sustained anti-proliferative response acutely induced in primary cells via activation of mitogenic oncogenes such as Ras/BRAF. This mechanism acts as an initial barrier preventing normal cells transformation into malignant cell. Besides oncogenic activation and DNA damage response (DDR), senescence is modulated by a plethora of other factors, and one of the most important one is oxygen tension of the tissue.

Background: P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is a membrane-bound efflux pump that is up-regulated in eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis and participates in epithelial cytokine secretion. Osteitis is associated with eosinophilic inflammation and may represent a method to predict patients with P-gp overexpression. The purpose of this article was to determine whether P-gp overexpression and increased osteitis scores are associated in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the efficacy and mechanism of action of intravenous (IV) bicarbonate in preventing radiocontrast nephropathy (RCN).

Materials And Methods: Twenty-eight Wistar rats were randomized into four groups including control (group 1), radiocontrast (group 2), bicarbonate (group 3), and radiocontrast plus bicarbonate (group 4). Once blood chemistry and arterial blood gases were examined and 24 h urine samples were collected, all rats were administered furosemide (2 mg/kg subcutaneous) and deprived of water for 24 h.

Background: In this retrospective study, we evaluated our surgical outcomes of transscleral intraocular lens (IOL) fixation and introduced a simple, quick, and effective method to fixate and bury the sutures in the sclera to avoid suture exposure.

Methods: Eyes were divided into 3 groups according to surgical technique. Half-thickness scleral flaps were prepared, and polypropylene suture ends were cut short in group 1 (12 eyes).

Brown tumors are rare skeletal manifestations of hyperparathyroidism (HPT) that may mimic cancer metastasis. Here, we present a 52-year-old woman with HPT and multiple foci of technetium uptake due to brown tumors on bone scintigraphy. Screening tests were negative for cancer and serum parathormon (PTH) measurement; parathyroid ultrasonography and scintigraphy suggested HPT.

Human leukocyte antigen DR1 in Japanese and Turkish patients with schizophrenia.

Prog Neuropsychopharmacol Biol Psychiatry

May 2006

Department of Psychiatry, Adnan Menderes University Medical School, Aydin, Turkey.

The main focus of this review has been to discuss the probable causes of the higher frequency of HLA DR1 antigen in patients with schizophrenia from Japan and Turkey, and also to see whether there was an impact of belonging to the Ural-Altaic language group. A general medline search on the terms HLA and schizophrenia was used as the method to determine HLA studies in patients with schizophrenia. Most of the findings were inconsistent regarding the increased or decreased frequencies of different Class I and II antigens.
