Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is related to the autoimmune destruction of β-cells, leading to their almost complete absence in patients with longstanding T1D. However, endogenous insulin secretion persists in such patients as evidenced by the measurement of plasma C-peptide. Recently, a low level of insulin has been found in non-β islet cells of patients with longstanding T1D, indicating that other islet cell types may contribute to persistent insulin secretion.

A low oxygen level in solid tumors is behind the modern concept of selective chemotherapy by hypoxia-activated prodrugs, such as heteroleptic complexes of transition metals (cobalt(III), iron(III) or platinum(IV)) with bi- or tetradentate ligands and an anticancer drug molecule as a co-ligand. A series of new cobalt(III) complexes [Co(LR)(esc)]ClO with esculetin (6,7-dihydroxycoumarin) and 2,2'-bipyridines (2,2'-bipy) functionalized by different substituents R were probed in the hypoxia-activated delivery of this model anticancer drug. Their combined study by cyclic voltammetry and NMR spectroscopy allowed identifying linear correlations of the electrochemical reduction potentials and the rate of the hypoxia-activated dissociation of [Co(LR)(esc)]ClO with the Hammett constants of the substituents in 2,2'-bipy ligands.

It was previously found that the severity of LPS-induced systemic inflammatory response (SIRS) in rats is determined by resistance to hypoxia and the level of Hif1a expression. Individual differences in the level of Hif1a and NFkb expression in the liver were studied in relation to the severity of inflammatory and immune reactions in LPS-induced SIRS in rats without previous placement in a ventilated decompression chamber. During the early periods after SIRS modeling, rats with high expression of the Hif1a and NFkb genes associated with increased expression of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines are identified.

The international consensus Sepsis-3 in 2016 defined sepsis as life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a disruption of the host response to infection. One of the main mechanisms leading to the death of patients with sepsis is an imbalance of the immune response to pathogens. Activation of immune cells, in particular neutrophils, plays a key role in the mechanisms of sepsis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how dark deprivation influences liver health and circadian rhythms when exposed to carbon tetrachloride (CCl), a known hepatotoxic agent.
  • While much is known about CCl's effects on the liver, research on its impact within the context of circadian rhythms is limited, and many studies focus on isolated periods rather than the overall rhythm.
  • Findings suggest that dark deprivation leads to more severe structural and functional liver changes due to reduced melatonin levels, indicating the need for further research on the role of melatonin in these processes.

The functioning of the ventricular myocardium in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) under high hemodynamic load leads to depletion of its resources and is associated with the risk of developing a dilated stage. In patients with HCM, the cardiomyocytes of the interventricular septum are hypertrophied, the proportion of cardiomyocytes in which myofibrils constitute less than 50% of the sarcoplasm volume increases with increasing the cardiomyocyte length and correlates with echocardiographic signs of left ventricular obstruction. These cardiomyocytes are characterized by ultrastructural signs of synthetic activity.

Epithelial progenitor cells of the primitive pancreatic ducts differentiate in 3 directions, which is accompanied by changes in cell phenotype. We analyze the distribution of the pancreatic and duodenal homeobox 1 (PDX1) in the epithelial cells of pancreatic ducts during the prenatal development in order to determine the potential use of this marker as an indicator of pancreatic cell maturation. Pancreatic autopsies from human fetuses (gestation weeks 17-23) were examined by immunohistochemical methods.

  • The literature review highlights the significance of cellular adhesion proteins (CAP) in heart health, focusing on their role in maintaining connections between heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) and facilitating electrical impulse transmission.
  • An imbalance in these proteins, primarily due to hereditary factors, leads to damage in intercalated discs, resulting in impaired impulse transmission and increasing the risk of cardiac arrhythmias, such as atrial and ventricular fibrillation.
  • Additionally, endothelial dysfunction contributes to atrial fibrillation by disrupting the CAP in the endocardium and blood vessels, further emphasizing the interconnectedness of cellular adhesion and heart disorders.

One of the urgent tasks of modern medicine is to detect microcirculation disorder during surgery to avoid possible consequences like tissue hypoxia, ischemia, and necrosis. To address this issue, in this article, we propose a compact probe with sapphire tip and optical sensing based on the principle of spatially resolved diffuse reflectance analysis. It allows for intraoperative measurement of tissue effective attenuation coefficient and its alteration during the changes of tissue condition, caused by microcirculation disorder.

It has been found that the intraday dynamics of body temperature in small mammal and bird species on the adjacent day are similar. Therefore, by focusing on the body temperature dynamics of the previous day, it is possible to predict with a high degree of accuracy the periods of increase and decrease in body temperature for the current day. This phenomenon was observed when animals were kept under natural illumination and under artificial illumination when the phase of the intrinsic circadian rhythm shifted by 1-2 h every day.
