Article Synopsis
  • Proximal connection anomalies of coronary arteries to the aorta are rare, with an occurrence rate of about 1%, and can lead to serious health issues such as sudden death or heart problems.
  • The most effective way to identify these anomalies is through CT coronary angiography, which helps pinpoint the artery's origin and pathway.
  • This study analyzes 10 cases from a military hospital in Rabat over two years, aiming to improve understanding and management of these anomalies by examining their characteristics and suggesting the need for detailed clinical registries.

Background: The cost of cancer drugs presents a significant challenge to accessibility of treatment worldwide. Projections indicate that by 2040, two-thirds of cancer cases will occur in low- and middle- income countries. Paradoxically, despite this impending burden, LMICs command less than 5% share of global resources for treating cancer.

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Hospital-acquired bloodstream infections (HA-BSI) in ICU patients can be life-threatening, and this study aimed to see how early adequate antibiotic treatment affects 28-day mortality rates for patients who survive at least one day after infection onset.
  • Using data from a multicenter study with 2,418 patients, researchers found that those who received adequate treatment within 24 hours had a lower 28-day mortality rate (32.8%) compared to those who were inadequately treated (40%).
  • The study concluded that inadequate antibiotic therapy within 24 hours contributes significantly to 28-day mortality, indicating that quicker treatment could greatly improve patient outcomes in cases of HA-BSI.

In computer-aided medical diagnosis, deep learning techniques have shown that it is possible to offer performance similar to that of experienced medical specialists in the diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis. In this study, a new deep learning (DL) software, called "MedKnee" is developed to assist physicians in the diagnosis process of knee osteoarthritis according to the Kellgren and Lawrence (KL) score. To accomplish this task, 5000 knee X-ray images obtained from the Osteoarthritis Initiative public dataset (OAI) were divided into train, valid, and test datasets in a ratio of 7:1:2 with a balanced distribution across each KL grade.

The treatment landscape of advanced kidney cancer has radically changed over the years. Targeting tumor angiogenesis from historical cytokines to multi-tyrosine kinase inhibitors and recently the advent of immunotherapy resulted in a radical improvement in survival but presented substantial challenges in terms of toxicity management. In countries where the access to immune checkpoints inhibitors is still very limited, tyrosine-kinase inhibitors remain the optimal choice.

Hydatid Cyst of the Cerebellopontine Cistern: Report of Two Cases with Literature Review.

Asian J Neurosurg

December 2023

Department of Neurosurgery, Avicenne Military Hospital of Marrakech, Cady Ayyad University, Marrakech, Morroco.

Posterior fossa localization of a hydatid cyst is uncommon; in these cases, the cyst usually locates in the cerebellum. Localization within the subarachnoid spaces or the cerebrospinal fluid ventricular system is exceptional. In the present report, which appears to be the seventh in the literature, we describe two cases of a hydatid cyst in the cerebellopontine cistern.

Rectovesical fistulas are rare and typically result from inflammatory or neoplastic conditions in the small pelvis. They occur within a pelvic region that has been altered by local inflammatory or neoplastic processes. This explains the challenges in detecting these fistulas using conventional imaging techniques, despite the effectiveness of CT and MRI.

Low-Grade Astrocytoma Causing Dural and Calvarial Destruction.

Asian J Neurosurg

March 2023

Department of Neurosurgery, Avicenne Military Hospital of Marrakech, Cadi Ayyad University, Marrakech, Morocco.

Most of the literature on intra-axial lesions causing calvarial and dural destruction comes from case reports for glioblastoma, lymphoma, metastasis, and aggressive meningioma. Destruction of dura and calvaria by low-grade gliomas is extremely uncommon; cases reported so far have been mostly oligodendrogliomas. This article describes the unusual case of a 23-year-old male patient with a left-sided intra and extracranial tumor involving the frontal lobe, destroying the overlying dura and calvaria, who underwent maximal safe resection.

In the 2016 World Health Organization (WHO) classification of renal tumors, renal cell carcinoma with fibromyomatous stroma (RCC FMS) (formerly RCC with leiomyomatous or smooth muscle stroma) was classified as an emerging or provisional entity of renal cell carcinoma (RCC). We report a rare case of RCC FMS in a 62-year-old male patient with hypertension, type II diabetes mellitus, and early chronic kidney disease. He was referred to the Department of Urology for an incidental finding of a 2-cm-long left renal nodule on a routine abdominal ultrasound.

The progress on cancer diagnosis and treatment has attained, in the last decade, enormous achievements by any estimate. Immunotherapy, new generations of targeted therapies, Chimeric antigen T-cells, cancer vaccines and the fascinating breakthroughs in translational research and cancer biology have changed the direction of cancer care. However, the fact that all patients worldwide cannot have access to these advances is dramatic.

Emerging cases of coinfection of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and tuberculosis (TB), although rare, have attracted the attention of health systems around the world and have arisen many concerns about the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of this coinfection especially in high TB burden countries. Here, we report a rare case and, to the best of our knowledge, the first reported case in Morocco of simultaneous diagnosis of an active pulmonary TB infection and a COVID-19 pneumonia. We present a case of a sixty-seven-year-old male patient who was admitted to our COVID-19 emergency department with a diagnosis of COVID-19 pneumonia, confirmed by nasopharyngeal swab's polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detection of SARS-CoV-2.
