A common phenomenon shows that ingestion of opium poppy shell-containing drugs can result in a "false-positive" urinalysis test result for mandatory or workplace heroin abuse screening. Owing to the short detection window (8 h in urine) of the characteristic heroin metabolite 6-monoacetylmorphine (6-MAM) confirmation or exclusion of heroin abusers still presents major challenges for toxicologists. In this work, we developed an ultra-performance liquid chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry method (UPLC-TOF-MS) with online data acquisition and multiple post-data-mining technologies combined with a multivariate statistical and batch validation analysis workflow to assess the characteristic urine metabolites of heroin abusers.

Our previous study demonstrated caspase independent DNA fragmentation after very brief cerebral ischemia, the mechanism of which was unclear. In this study, we explore whether actin is cleaved following focal cerebral ischemia, and whether these structural changes of actin might modulate DNA fragmentation observed following focal ischemia. Results showed that a cleaved β-actin fragment was identified in brains of rats 24 hours following 10-minute and 2-hour focal ischemia.

Parental care results in increased hippocampal volumes through adaptive stress responses in developing animals. However, human studies have not yet provided consistent findings analogous to the animal literature, possibly because parental care in humans is likely intermingled with parental overprotection, as suggested by the optimal parenting theory. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the effect of parental care on offspring hippocampal volume varies as a function of parental overprotection with a large cohort of young adult participants (N = 257).

Icariine Restores LPS-Induced Bone Loss by Downregulating miR-34c Level.

Inflammation

October 2016

Biological Engineering and Regenerative Medicine Center, Department of Orthopedics, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, HuaZhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.

Bacteria-induced inflammatory responses cause excessive bone resorption in chronic inflammatory diseases such as septic arthritis, osteomyelitis, and orthopedic implant failure. Icariine has been reported to facilitate the bone healing and reduce the occurrence of osteoporosis in clinical, moreover, laboratory studies which have proved that Icariine promotes the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts in vitro. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of Icariine on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced bone loss via an osteogenic-in vitro model and to elucidate the underlying molecular mechanisms.

Pathway to neural resilience: Self-esteem buffers against deleterious effects of poverty on the hippocampus.

Hum Brain Mapp

November 2016

School of Psychology, Beijing Key Laboratory of Applied Experimental Psychology, Beijing Normal University, Beijing, China.

Human neuroimaging studies have shown that people living in poverty tend to suffer hippocampal atrophy, which leads to impaired memory and learning throughout life. However, behavioral studies demonstrate that poor people with high self-esteem are often exempt from the deleterious effect of poverty and instead possess a happy and successful life. Here we investigated whether high self-esteem can buffer against the deleterious effects of poverty, as indicated by low subjective socioeconomic status (SSS), on the hippocampal gray matter volume (GMV) in a large cohort of young participants (N = 280).

May 2016

Beijing Key Laboratory of Applied Experimental Psychology, School of Psychology, Beijing Normal University, Beijing 100875, China. Electronic address:

The problem of emotion recognition has been tackled by researchers in both affective computing and cognitive neuroscience. While affective computing relies on analyzing visual features from facial expressions, it has been proposed that humans recognize emotions by internally simulating the emotional states conveyed by others' expressions, in addition to perceptual analysis of facial features. Here we investigated whether and how our internal feelings contributed to the ability to decode facial expressions.

Effect of a Single Nucleotide Polymorphism in the LAMA1 Promoter Region on Transcriptional Activity: Implication for Pathological Myopia.

Curr Eye Res

October 2016

a Beijing Tongren Eye Center, Beijing Tongren Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Key Lab , Beijing , China.

Purpose: To elucidate the role of the protein coding laminin α1 (LAMA1) gene in pathological myopia (PM) at the transcriptional level. To achieve this, the binding affinity of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs2089760-located on the LAMA1 promoter gene-to human fetal scleral fibroblast (HFSF) nucleoprotein was investigated and its effect on LAMA1 transcriptional initiation activity was analyzed.

Methods: Binding interactions of the HFSF nucleoprotein and biotin-labeled SNP rs2089760 probe were investigated by amplifying the LAMA1 promoter gene and performing overlap extension polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to obtain the G/A mutation of LAMA1 SNP rs2089760.
