Objectives: Detrusor overactivity and constipation often co-exist in children with enuresis. Constipation is known to be linked to detrusor overactivity. The voiding chart is the best non-invasive way to investigate bladder function, whereas the ultrasonographical detection of rectal dilatation is the best way to objectify constipation.

Intralipid™ administration attenuates the hypotensive effects of acute intravenous amiodarone overdose in a swine model.

Am J Emerg Med

August 2016

Hellenic Society of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Athens, Greece; National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Medical School, Postgraduate Study Program (MSc) "Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation", Athens, Greece.

Purpose: To investigate whether a lipid emulsion could counteract the hypotensive effects of amiodarone overdose after an acute intravenous administration and improve 4 h survival in an established model of swine cardiovascular research.

Methods: Twenty pigs were intubated and instrumented to measure aortic pressures and central venous pressures (CVP). After allowing the animals to stabilize for 60 minutes, amiodarone overdose (1 mg/kg/min) was initiated for a maximum of 20 minutes.

Restless legs syndrome.

J Intern Med

November 2009

Department of Neurology, Karolinska Institutet, Karolinska University Hospital, Huddinge, Sleep Disorders Center, Avesta Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological sensory-motor disorder that is characterized by intense restlessness and unpleasant creeping sensations deep inside the lower legs. Symptoms appear when the legs are at rest and are worst in the evening and at night. They force patients to keep moving their legs, and often to get out of bed and wander about.

Background: The prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) among the general population is 2-15%, and with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) 2%. Both RLS and FMS are more common among women. The aim of our study was to evaluate the prevalence of RLS in a group of female patients diagnosed with FMS and to compare the occurrence of symptoms of daytime sleepiness and experienced sleep disorders between fibromyalgia patients with or without RLS.

The main objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of self-reported depressive mood during the winter season among Swedish adolescents and to investigate gender differences. Another aim was to analyze the factor structure and internal consistency of the Kiddie SPAQ (K-SPAQ), a pediatric version of the Seasonal Pattern Questionnaire (SPAQ).

Treatment of snorers with a volatile oil: a randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial.

ORL J Otorhinolaryngol Relat Spec

December 2001

Sleep Disorders Center, Avesta Hospital, Avesta, Sweden.

Snoring is a significant problem both for the patient and for the bed partner. Seventy-two male and female heavy snorers and their bed partners participated in a double-blinded, placebo-controlled study on the effects of a volatile oil administered by gargling. The patients were diagnosed as heavy snorers after they underwent overnight polysomnography showing that their apnea indexes were below 5, thus sleep apnea patients were not included in the study.

Women living with heavy snorers were more frequently affected by symptoms of insomnia, morning headache, daytime sleepiness, and fatigue than women living with non-snorers. Questionnaire data were collected from 1,032 women 30 to 64 years of age residing in Dalarna county, in mid-Sweden. There were indications of a "dose-response relationship" between the conjectured sound exposure and reported symptoms, regardless of whether the female herself snored.

Afternoon serum-melatonin in sleep disordered breathing.

J Intern Med

August 1998

Department of Internal Medicine, Avesta Hospital, Sweden.

Snoring is a significant problem both for the patient and for the bedpartner. It is well known that nasal stuffiness can contribute to snoring, and sleep quality may deteriorate because of the snoring. Nasal dilation can reduce snoring and improve sleep.

Headache, snoring and sleep apnoea.

J Neurol

September 1996

Sleep Disorders Center, Avesta Hospital, Sweden.

To evaluate reported headache prevalence among the general population and patients suffering from snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), a cross-sectional study was performed among those aged 30-64 years residing in Kopparberg county in central Sweden. Consecutive patients referred to the sleep laboratory in the catchment area who fulfilled objective diagnostic criteria (snorers = 448, OSAS = 324) and a random sample of the general population (n = 583) responded to the same questionnaire. Patients were selected following sleep apnoea screening with 100% specificity for both OSAS and snoring.

Three case reports describe nocturia and enuresis as complications of the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). It is important to recognize the causal relationship since these troublesome symptoms are easily treated by treating the sleep apnea.
