Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of long-term disability and mortality in young adults. The devastating effects of TBI on emotion regulation, executive functioning, and cognition have been well-established, and recent research links TBI as a risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Despite an increased focus on the long-term cognitive dysfunction associated with TBI, research into potential treatments has not yet generated consistent successful results in human subjects.

Ileal Tubulo-Villous Adenoma Causing Small Bowel Obstruction in a Virgin Abdomen.

Small bowel obstructions (SBO) are a common surgical problem accounting for up half of all emergency laparotomies in the United States. SBO in the virgin abdomen (SBO-VA) presents surgeons with a unique predicament as historical teaching has mandated operative exploration in these situations due to their association with more sinister etiologies. More recent research has demonstrated that this may not be the case, with adhesive disease comprising the majority of SBO-VA.

This is a case report of a 47-year-old male with a history of hypertension and pre-diabetes who presented to the emergency department with dyspnea, progressive unilateral leg swelling and pain. The patient tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection about a week earlier. The patient was found to have an extensive clot burden of his lower extremity veins, both deep and superficial, which extended to his inferior vena cava (IVC).

Virtual medical student radiology clerkships during the COVID-19 pandemic: Distancing is not a barrier.

Background: Stress on medical education caused by COVID-19 has prompted medical schools to bar their students from onsite education at hospitals and clinics, limiting their educational experiences. Radiology is uniquely positioned to be a virtual rotation during this health crisis and beyond.

The Appendix: A Rare Case of an Appendiceal Collision Tumor.

Appendicitis is a common cause of right lower quadrant pain. However, appropriate diagnostic evaluation and a high clinical suspicion can reveal alternative etiologies that are not so commonly encountered. In this report, we present a rare case of an appendiceal collision tumor involving two distinct neoplasms as the source of the patient's pain and describe how thoughtful clinical maneuvering led to its diagnosis and treatment.

Inferior mesenteric vein thrombosis (IMVT) is a rare entity that can lead to a potentially lethal event unless recognized early in the disease. Although its prevalence is low, IMVT presents mainly in certain conditions such as in inflammatory processes like diverticulitis, arrhythmias, hypercoagulable states, connective tissue disorders, malignancy, or hereditary thrombophilias.  Mesenteric venous thrombophlebitis is a condition in which a blood clot in a vein causes inflammation and pain.

Neurocysticercosis (NCC), the most common parasitic infection of the CNS in humans, is a frequent cause of seizure disorders and epilepsy. The cystic larvae is endemic to developing countries where the population raises pigs as a reliable source of food, however, massive immigration has now forced the surge of the disease in developed areas making it a worldwide problem. Clinical presentation is affected by the size, number, and location of the lesions within the brain, with the most common manifestations being seizures, headaches, and increased intracranial pressure.

A 63-year-old male with a history of hiatal hernia presented with one day of hematemesis and acute peritonitis. Computed tomographic imaging revealed perigastric pneumoperitoneum concerning perforated viscus. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a Type III hiatal hernia with a perforated posterior gastric ulcer, which was reduced and repaired.

is a rapidly growing mycobacterium (RGM) known to be abundant in soil, dust and water. Unlike other non-tuberculous mycobacteria, RGM is typically resistant to first-line anti-tuberculosis drugs. These organisms are known to cause community and hospital-acquired infections; however, central nervous system (CNS) infections caused by these pathogens have not been abundantly reported.

Colonic Migration of a Nephroureteral Stent Through a Colovesical Fistula.

Description We describe a case of a patient with a two-year history of prostate cancer who underwent placement of nephroureteral stents. He subsequently presented to the hospital with complications from prolonged retention of the stents, which ultimately lead to a secondary diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of the rectum. A colonoscopy performed approximately two weeks after a bilateral nephroureteral tube exchange demonstrated what was believed to be locoregional metastatic disease and a fistulous connection with the distal nephroureteral stents.

A 49-year-old man flight attendant with a past medical history of Roux-en-Y bypass and massive weight loss 18 months prior was referred for surgical management of a superficial temporal artery aneurysm. Imaging confirmed the diagnosis. Intraoperatively a 1 cm fusiform aneurysm was identified with numerous feeding side branch vessels.

An Incidental Discovery Following Hypertension and Headaches: A Pheochromocytoma Case Report.

Pheochromocytomas (PCC) are rare neuroendocrine tumors of the adrenal medulla that arise from chromaffin cells. These cells are neural crest derivatives and are innervated by the splanchnic nerve of the sympathetic nervous system which releases acetylcholine that in turn binds to nicotinic acetylcholine receptors of the adrenal medulla causing the release of catecholamines. The dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine released from these tumors are responsible for the episodic hyperadrenergic symptoms seen in these cases such as hypertension, palpitations, and headaches.
