Article Synopsis
  • IGVs can develop as a rare complication of chronic pancreatitis due to splenic vein thrombosis caused by pancreatic pressure.
  • A 57-year-old patient with chronic pancreatitis experienced upper GI bleeding from IGVs, which were identified during an endoscopy and linked to splenic vein thrombosis via CT angiography.
  • Treatment involved IV sandostatin for bleeding control, and splenic artery embolization was performed instead of splenectomy, resulting in a successful decrease in variceal size and prevention of further bleeding.

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) represents a therapeutic challenge in which standard chemotherapy is limited to paclitaxel. MBQ167, a clinical stage small molecule inhibitor that targets Rac and Cdc42, inhibits tumor growth and metastasis in mouse models of TNBC. Herein, we investigated the efficacy of MBQ167 in combination with paclitaxel in TNBC preclinical models, as a prelude to safety trials of this combination in patients with advanced breast cancer.

Viral strains, age, and host factors are associated with variable immune responses against SARS-CoV-2 and disease severity. Puerto Ricans have a genetic mixture of races: European, African, and Native American. We hypothesized that unique host proteins/pathways are associated with COVID-19 disease severity in Puerto Rico.

Clinical antibodies are an important class of drugs for the treatment of both chronic and acute diseases. Their manufacturability is subject to evaluation to ensure product quality and efficacy. One critical quality attribute is deamidation, a non-enzymatic process that is observed to occur during thermal stress, at low or high pH, or a combination thereof.

Gastric schwannomas are rare peripheral nerve sheath tumors which are usually found incidentally while undergoing workup for other conditions. Despite their benign nature, they require surgical resection with negative margins. It is important to differentiate gastric schwannomas from gastrointestinal stromal tumors prior to surgical excision, as this can alter the recommended surgical plan.

Background: Covid-19 is a triphasic disorder characterized by a viral phase lasting 7-10 days from first onset of symptoms. In approximately 20% it is followed by a second stage heralded by elevation of pro-inflammatory markers such as ferritin, IL-6, CRP, LDH and D-dimers. We hypothesized that those with few abnormalities would have a low risk for progression to respiratory insufficiency and could be monitored at home without treatment.

Inherited pathogenic variants in genes that confer moderate to high risk of breast cancer may explain up to 50% of familial breast cancer. This study aimed at identifying inherited pathogenic variants in breast cancer cases from Puerto Rico that were not linked to BRCA1 or BRCA2. Forty-eight breast cancer patients that met the clinical criteria for BRCA testing but had received a negative BRCA1/2 result were recruited.

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of lenalidomide in patients with aggressive lymphoma who experienced less than complete response (CR) or as maintenance therapy after CR after gemcitabine, rituximab, and oxaliplatin salvage chemotherapy (GROC-Rev regimen).

Patients And Methods: Patients with relapsed/refractory non-Hodgkin lymphoma received up to 6 GROC-Rev courses: rituximab (375 mg/m provided intravenously) on day 1, oxaliplatin (100 mg/m provided intravenously; 2 hours), gemcitabine (provided 1250 mg/m intravenously; 30 minutes) on day 2, and pegfilgrastim (6 mg provided subcutaneously) on day 3. Patients switched to lenalidomide if they did not experience at least partial response (PR) after their second GROC-Rev course, or if they experienced less than a CR after 6 courses.

Objective: In this study, we assessed the Kidney Donor Risk Index (KDRI) in Puerto Rican deceased kidney donors whose donations took place from 2009 to 2011 and evaluated short-term graft survival in the recipients of those kidneys. The results highlight differences between the distributions of KDRI values in the populations of the 48 contiguous states of the United States, Alaska, and Hawaii and that of Puerto Rico. Additionally, we evaluated the impacts of polyomavirus (BKV) infection and anti-donor HLA antibodies on the recipients.

Background: Although most cases of herpes zoster (HZ) are self-limited, lymphoma patients are at greater risk for recurrences and more serious and atypical complications that can delay scheduled anti-lymphoma treatment or prevent its continuation.

Patients And Methods: This is a cohort study with a retrospective chart review of 415 patients diagnosed with lymphoma to determine the incidence and risk factors for developing HZ among this population. Data collected included date of diagnosis, patient's age, last follow-up or death, stage and presentation of lymphoma, treatment type, baseline laboratory tests, and comorbidities.

Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer diagnosis in women and is responsible for considerable mortality among the women of Puerto Rico. However, there are few studies in Puerto Rico on the genetic factors influencing risk. To determine the contribution of pathogenic mutations in and , we sequenced these genes in 302 cases from two separate medical centers, who were not selected for age of onset or family history.

Hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes comprise approximately 10% of diagnosed cancers; however, familial forms are believed to account for up to 30% of some cancers. In Hispanics, the most commonly diagnosed hereditary cancers include colorectal cancer syndromes such as, Lynch Syndrome, Familial Adenomatous Polyposis, and hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndromes. Although the incidence of hereditary cancers is low, patients diagnosed with hereditary cancer syndromes are at high-risk for developing secondary cancers.

The three major hereditary cancer syndromes in Latinos (Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer, Familial Adenomatous Polyposis and Lynch Syndrome) have been shown to exhibit geographic disparities by country of origin suggesting admixture-based disparities. A solid infrastructure of clinical genetics geared towards diagnosis and prevention could aid in reducing the mortality of these cancer syndromes in Latinos. Currently, clinical cancer genetic services in Latin America are scarce.

Estrogen Receptor Expression Is Associated with DNA Repair Capacity in Breast Cancer.

PLoS One

August 2016

Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology, Graduate School of Public Health, University of Puerto Rico, Medical Sciences Campus, San Juan, Puerto Rico, United States of America.

Estrogen-receptor-positive (ER+) tumors employ complex signaling that engages in crosstalk with multiple pathways through genomic and non-genomic regulation. A greater understanding of these pathways is important for developing improved biomarkers that can better determine treatment choices, risk of recurrence and cancer progression. Deficiencies in DNA repair capacity (DRC) is a hallmark of breast cancer (BC); therefore, in this work we tested whether ER signaling influences DRC.
