During the isolation, identification, and assessment of nematode-trapping fungi (NTF) against nematodes, we discovered an unusual fungus in decaying wood from Morelos State, Mexico. This isolate exhibited some characteristics similar to those of the genus; however, we found that it did not match any previously reported species within this genus after conducting morphological and phylogenetic analyses using the ITS, TEF, and RPB2 regions. This new species displays conidiophores with two or three stems emerging from the same initial site and conidiophores with only a single stem and aerial thickened hyphae from which single conidiophores emerge, forming 3D adhesive nets.

Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a rare but severe condition characterized by persistent obstruction and vascular remodeling in the pulmonary arteries following an acute pulmonary embolism (APE). Although APE is a significant risk factor, up to 25% of CTEPH cases occur without a history of APE or deep vein thrombosis, complicating the understanding of its pathogenesis. Herein, we carried out a narrative review discussing the mechanisms involved in CTEPH development, including fibrotic thrombus formation, pulmonary vascular remodeling, and abnormal angiogenesis, leading to elevated pulmonary vascular resistance and right heart failure.

This work presents strong evidence supporting the use of decellularized human iliac arteries combined with adipose tissue-derived stem cells (hASCs) as a promising alternative for vascular tissue engineering, opening the path to future treatments for peripheral artery disease (PAD). PAD is a progressive condition with high rates of amputation and mortality due to ischemic damage and limited graft options. Traditional synthetic grafts often fail due to poor integration, while autologous grafts may be unsuitable for patients with compromised vascular health.

Meat preservation processes have been widely studied over time, especially those related to low temperatures (freezing and freeze-drying); however, there is very little research that directly relates the effect of these processes on the structure of meat-and the main meat proteins-and how these changes affect some attributes of the final quality. Pork loin meat () was used, which was frozen-thawed and freeze-dried-rehydrated to subsequently evaluate changes in its chemical composition and physicochemical parameters such as water activity ( ), pH, and water-holding capacity. Physical aspects such as color profile, surface myoglobin fraction, shear force, and histological sections were also evaluated, along with thermal analysis by modulated differential scanning calorimetry.

The development of a protective HIV vaccine remains a challenge given the high antigenic diversity and mutational rate of the virus, which leads to viral escape and establishment of reservoirs in the host. Modern antigen design can guide immune responses towards conserved sites, consensus sequences or normally subdominant epitopes, thus enabling the development of broadly neutralizing antibodies and polyfunctional lymphocyte responses. Conventional epitope vaccines can often be impaired by low immunogenicity, a limitation that may be overcome by using a carrier system.

The use of new technologies that allow for improving conventional food preservation processes is what the industry has been adopting in recent decades, with high-intensity ultrasound (US) and the application of cryoprotectant agents (cryogels) being those that have become more relevant today. For this reason, in this study, cuts of pork frozen in liquid nitrogen with and without waxy starch cryogel and thawed under controlled conditions in water immersion and with US were used, evaluating thermal parameters such as the initial zone and the melting rate of ice crystals and quality parameters such as pH, water holding capacity (WHC), microstructure, color profile, shear force, and surface changes. It was shown that the addition of cryogel modifies the initial fusion zone, that US-assisted thawing increases the fusion rate, and that both factors influence the quality parameters.

The precise role of neutrophil-derived reactive oxygen species (ROS) in combating bacterial uropathogens during urinary tract infections (UTI) remains largely unexplored. In this study, we elucidate the antimicrobial significance of NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2)-derived ROS, as opposed to mitochondrial ROS, in facilitating neutrophil-mediated eradication of uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), the primary causative agent of UTI. Furthermore, NOX2-derived ROS regulate NF-κB-mediated inflammatory responses in neutrophils against UPEC by inducing the release of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) from its inhibitor, Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1).

Specialized or secondary metabolites are small molecules of biological origin, often showing potent biological activities with applications in agriculture, engineering and medicine. Usually, the biosynthesis of these natural products is governed by sets of co-regulated and physically clustered genes known as biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). To share information about BGCs in a standardized and machine-readable way, the Minimum Information about a Biosynthetic Gene cluster (MIBiG) data standard and repository was initiated in 2015.
