  • Scientists are worried about a mosquito called Anopheles stephensi that spreads malaria, especially in Africa.
  • They are trying to use a bacterium called Wolbachia to help control these malaria-carrying mosquitoes.
  • After some experiments, they created a special line of mosquitoes (HP1) that had Wolbachia, which could pass it on to their babies and had other good traits that might help fight malaria.

Background: Patients who present to the emergency department (ED) with severe hypertension defined as a systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥180 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) or diastolic (DBP) ≥120 (mm Hg) without evidence of acute end-organ damage are often deemed high risk and treated acutely in the ED. However, there is a dearth of evidence from large studies with long-term follow-up for the assessment of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). We conducted the largest study to date of patients presenting with severe hypertension to identify predictors of MACE and examine whether blood pressure at discharge is associated with heightened risk.

Under the influence: exogenous testosterone influences men's cross-sex perceptions of sexual interest.

Front Psychol

September 2024

Laboratory of Social Neuroendocrinology, Department of Psychology, Nipissing University, North Bay, ON, Canada.

The sexual misperception bias is a cognitive bias in which men tend to overestimate sexual interest from women, potentially shaped by evolutionary mating strategies. Testosterone, often linked to mating behaviors, might play a role in sustaining sexual overperceptions. To explore this possibility, we conducted a placebo-controlled study with 190 heterosexual men, administering either 11 mg of testosterone or a placebo.

Background: The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends annual alcohol screening and brief behavioral intervention (alcohol SBI) with general adult and pregnant populations. Implementation of alcohol SBI in primary care has encountered numerous barriers to adapting procedures and infrastructure to support its routine delivery. This collection of case studies describes the implementation strategies used by 4 academic health system teams that were funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to implement alcohol SBI within healthcare systems to prevent alcohol-exposed pregnancies.

Electronic address:

Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are involved in the development of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI). The present study aimed to reveal the role of transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1), an oxidative sensor, in CI-AKI. Trpa1 mice with Trpa1 conditionally knocked out in renal proximal tubular (PT) cells, Trpa1 overexpression mice (Trpa1-OE), and TRPA1 agonists and antagonists were used to study its function in a mouse model of iohexol-induced CI-AKI.

Author Affiliations: College of Nursing, University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida (Drs Giurgescu, Hyer, and Wheeler); and Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan (Drs Adaji and Misra).

Purpose: The purpose of this study among pregnant and postpartum Black women was twofold: (1) to compare levels of perceived stress, depressive symptoms, social support, and neighborhood disorder and crime before the pandemic vs during the pandemic; and (2) to examine the association of perceived stress, depressive symptoms, and social support with neighborhood disorder and crime at both time points.

Methods: This was a prospective study as part of the Biosocial Impact on Black Births, a longitudinal study that examined the role of maternal factors on preterm birth among Black women. A sample of 143 women were included who responded to survey questions during pregnancy prior to the pandemic and again after birth, during the pandemic.

A Mixed Methods Approach to Understand Mother-Father Relationship and Perceived Stress Among Black Pregnant Women.

J Perinat Neonatal Nurs

July 2024

Author Affiliations: College of Nursing, University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida (Drs Wheeler, LaManna, Davis, Xie, and Giurgescu); Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Michigan State University, East Lansing (Ms Esparza and Dr Misra); College of Nursing, Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan (Dr Khalil); Department of Statistics and Data Science, University of Central Florida, Orlando, Florida (Dr Xie); and Department of Nursing Research and Evidence Based Practice, Children's Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Dr Kavanaugh).

Background: Black women in the United States report moderate to high levels of perceived stress during pregnancy. Though lower levels of involvement and support from father of the baby (FOB) and higher levels of conflict have been associated with higher levels of maternal perceived stress, it is not clear how Black pregnant women experience the mother-father relationship and its influence on perceived stress.

Purpose: To examine and describe the mother-father relationship and its role in experiences of perceived stress from the perspective of Black pregnant women.

Wolbachia mediates crosstalk between miRNA and Toll pathways to enhance resistance to dengue virus in Aedes aegypti.

PLoS Pathog

June 2024

The Engineering Research Center of Reproduction and Translational Medicine of Hunan Province, Department of Medical Laboratory Science, Hunan Normal University School of Medicine, Changsha, Hunan, P.R. China.

The obligate endosymbiont Wolbachia induces pathogen interference in the primary disease vector Aedes aegypti, facilitating the utilization of Wolbachia-based mosquito control for arbovirus prevention, particularly against dengue virus (DENV). However, the mechanisms underlying Wolbachia-mediated virus blockade have not been fully elucidated. Here, we report that Wolbachia activates the host cytoplasmic miRNA biogenesis pathway to suppress DENV infection.

Management of wolves is controversial in many jurisdictions where wolves live, which underscores the importance of rigor, transparency, and reproducibility when evaluating outcomes of management actions. Treves and Louchouarn 2022 (hereafter TL) predicted outcomes for various fall 2021 hunting scenarios following Wisconsin's judicially mandated hunting and trapping season in spring 2021, and concluded that even a zero harvest scenario could result in the wolf population declining below the population goal of 350 wolves specified in the 1999 Wisconsin wolf management plan. TL further concluded that with a fall harvest of > 16 wolves there was a "better than average possibility" that the wolf population size would decline below that 350-wolf threshold.

  • This meta-analysis investigates the potential advantages of transcarotid (TC-TAVR) access over transfemoral (TF-TAVR) access for patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR).
  • The study reviewed seven adjusted studies from PubMed/MEDLINE and Cochrane Library, involving 6609 patients, with 5048 receiving TF-TAVR and 1561 receiving TC-TAVR.
  • Findings show no significant differences in mortality, major bleeding, or stroke/transient ischemic attack between the two methods, though TC-TAVR had a lower risk of vascular complications, suggesting it could be a feasible alternative to TF-TAVR.
