The forceps-needle: Combining needle and grasping functions in a single instrument.

A new forceps-needle to facilitate intrascleral haptic fixation surgery is described. In an initial series of 10 cases, the forceps-needle was used to grasp and externalize the haptic of a 3-piece intraocular lens (IOL) for transscleral fixation. The site of perforation was marked at 180 degrees 2.

Deep-Glassy Ice VI Revealed with a Combination of Neutron Spectroscopy and Diffraction.

The recent discovery of a low-temperature endotherm upon heating hydrochloric-acid-doped ice VI has sparked a vivid controversy. The two competing explanations aiming to explain its origin range from a new distinct crystalline phase of ice to deep-glassy states of the well-known ice VI. Problems with the slow kinetics of deuterated phases have been raised, which we circumvent here entirely by simultaneously measuring the inelastic neutron spectra and neutron diffraction data of HO samples.

Mariana serpentinite mud volcanism exhumes subducted seamount materials: implications for the origin of life.

The subduction of seamounts and ridge features at convergent plate boundaries plays an important role in the deformation of the overriding plate and influences geochemical cycling and associated biological processes. Active serpentinization of forearc mantle and serpentinite mud volcanism on the Mariana forearc (between the trench and active volcanic arc) provides windows on subduction processes.  Here, we present (1) the first observation of an extensive exposure of an undeformed Cretaceous seamount currently being subducted at the Mariana Trench inner slope; (2) vertical deformation of the forearc region related to subduction of Pacific Plate seamounts and thickened crust; (3) recovered Ocean Drilling Program and International Ocean Discovery Program cores of serpentinite mudflows that confirm exhumation of various Pacific Plate lithologies, including subducted reef limestone; (4) petrologic, geochemical and paleontological data from the cores that show that Pacific Plate seamount exhumation covers greater spatial and temporal extents; (5) the inference that microbial communities associated with serpentinite mud volcanism may also be exhumed from the subducted plate seafloor and/or seamounts; and (6) the implications for effects of these processes with regard to evolution of life.

The value of manure - Manure as co-product in life cycle assessment.

Livestock production is important for food security, nutrition, and landscape maintenance, but it is associated with several environmental impacts. To assess the risk and benefits arising from livestock production, transparent and robust indicators are required, such as those offered by life cycle assessment. A central question in such approaches is how environmental burden is allocated to livestock products and to manure that is re-used for agricultural production.

Comparison of ammonia emissions related to nitrogen use efficiency of livestock production in Europe.

The increasing global demand for food and the environmental effects of reactive nitrogen losses in the food production chain, increase the need for efficient use of nitrogen (N). Of N harvested in agricultural plant products, 80% is used to feed livestock. Because the largest atmospheric loss of reactive nitrogen from livestock production systems is ammonia (NH), the focus of this paper is on N lost as NH during the production of animal protein.

Familicide: A Systematic Literature Review.

Familicides have received relatively little attention and are mostly discussed in studies with broader aims. Here, we reviewed 67 studies from 18 countries on familicides, in which an offender killed or attempted to kill their current or former spouse/intimate partner and one or more of their biological or stepchildren. We conducted a systematic literature search in PubMed, PsycINFO, and Google Scholar.

LIPEMIA RETINALIS DURING CHEMOTHERAPY WITH ADJUNCTIVE GLUCOCORTICOID TREATMENT IN A PATIENT WITH COLON CARCINOMA.

Purpose: The purpose of this report is to describe a case of lipemia retinalis due to decompensating hyperlipidemia that occurred during chemotherapy in a patient with metastatic colon carcinoma.

Methods: Retrospective case report.

Results: A 55-year-old non-insulin-dependent diabetic man with well-controlled hyperlipidemia presented himself with temporarily blurred vision in both eyes occurring during chemotherapy.

Randomized controlled European multicenter trial on the prevention of cystoid macular edema after cataract surgery in diabetics: ESCRS PREMED Study Report 2.

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of perioperative treatment strategies, in addition to topical bromfenac 0.09% and dexamethasone 0.1%, to reduce the risk for developing cystoid macular edema (CME) after uneventful cataract surgery in diabetic patients.

Gender differences in legal outcomes of filicide in Austria and Finland.

Female offenders of filicide have been found to receive more lenient legal handling than male offenders. We aimed to discover these possible gender differences in the legal outcome of filicide cases. This was a binational register-based study covering all filicide offenders in Austria and Finland 1995-2005.

Repeated neonaticide: differences and similarities to single neonaticide events.

This study aims to identify differences between single and repeat perpetrators of filicide by using register-based data. The study used register-based, comprehensive, nationwide data from both Austria and Finland. The current study covers 23 perpetrators, 20 single and 3 repeat perpetrators, with a total of 28 victims.

European multicenter trial of the prevention of cystoid macular edema after cataract surgery in nondiabetics: ESCRS PREMED study report 1.

Purpose: To compare the efficacy of a topical nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug, topical corticosteroid, and a combination of both drugs to prevent the occurrence of cystoid macular edema (CME) after cataract surgery in nondiabetic patients.

Setting: Twelve European study centers.

Design: Randomized clinical trial.

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor for unilateral acute idiopathic maculopathy.

Purpose: To describe a case of unilateral acute idiopathic maculopathy (UAIM) response to intravitreal therapy with aflibercept (Eylea).

Methods: Retrospective case report.

Results: A 36-year-old woman with sudden visual impairment and central scotoma was found to have a UAIM in her left eye.

Systems for deep brain stimulation: review of technical features.

The use of deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an important treatment option for movement disorders and other medical conditions. Today, three major manufacturers provide implantable systems for DBS. Although the underlying principle is basically the same for all available systems, the differences in the technical features vary considerably.

Capsular bag-fixated and ciliary sulcus-fixated intraocular lens centration after supplementary intraocular lens implantation in the same eye.

Purpose: To assess capsular bag and sulcus intraocular lens (IOL) centration in eyes that had implantation of a sulcus-fixated supplementary IOL anterior to a preexisting capsular bag IOL.

Intraindividual comparison of capsule behavior of 2 hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses during a 5-year follow-up.

Purpose: To evaluate and compare the 5-year postoperative anterior (ACO) and posterior capsule opacification (PCO), the occurrence of glistenings, and the level of anterior capsule retraction after implantation of 2 designs of 1-piece hydrophobic acrylic IOLs.

Setting: Hospital St. John, Vienna, Austria.

Regression of epiretinal membrane after optic nerve atrophy.

Purpose: To describe a case of epiretinal membrane (ERM) regression after optic nerve atrophy.

Methods: Retrospective case report.

Results: A 56-year-old man with progressive visual impairment was found to have an ERM with associated retinal thickening and distortion (documented with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography [OCT]).

Challenges and priorities for modelling livestock health and pathogens in the context of climate change.

Climate change has the potential to impair livestock health, with consequences for animal welfare, productivity, greenhouse gas emissions, and human livelihoods and health. Modelling has an important role in assessing the impacts of climate change on livestock systems and the efficacy of potential adaptation strategies, to support decision making for more efficient, resilient and sustainable production. However, a coherent set of challenges and research priorities for modelling livestock health and pathogens under climate change has not previously been available.

Validation of climate model-inferred regional temperature change for late-glacial Europe.

Comparisons of climate model hindcasts with independent proxy data are essential for assessing model performance in non-analogue situations. However, standardized palaeoclimate data sets for assessing the spatial pattern of past climatic change across continents are lacking for some of the most dynamic episodes of Earth's recent past. Here we present a new chironomid-based palaeotemperature dataset designed to assess climate model hindcasts of regional summer temperature change in Europe during the late-glacial and early Holocene.
