Background And Purpose: This animal study was designed to evaluate in vivo the acute and short-term safety and efficacy of the new Artisse intrasaccular device (ISD) for aneurysm occlusion and to gain knowledge about the behavior in the aneurysms.

Materials And Methods: The device was implanted in 7 white New Zealand rabbits with bifurcation aneurysms. Immediate and 90-day angiographic follow-up as well as histologic and scanning electron microscope imaging were evaluated.

Harmonization of alcohol use data and mortality across a multi-national HIV cohort collaboration.

Background: Alcohol use is measured in diverse ways across settings. Harmonization of measures is necessary to assess effects of alcohol use in multi-cohort collaborations, such as studies of people with HIV (PWH).

Methods: Data were combined from 14 HIV cohort studies (nine European, five North American) participating in the Antiretroviral Therapy Cohort Collaboration.

Contribution of individual phospholipase A enzymes to the cleavage of oxidized phospholipids in human blood plasma.

Phospholipids containing oxidized esterified PUFA residues (OxPLs) are increasingly recognized for multiple biological activities and causative involvement in disease pathogenesis. Pharmacokinetics of these compounds in blood plasma is essentially not studied. Human plasma contains both genuine phospholipases A (PAF-AH (also called Lp-PLA) and sPLA) and multifunctional enzymes capable of removing sn-2 residues in native and oxidized PLs (LCAT, PRDX6).

Plasma effects on bacterial time-kill dynamics; insights from a PKPD modelling analysis.

In vitro time-kill curve (TKC) experiments are an important part of the pharmacokinetic- pharmacodynamic (PKPD) characterisation of antibiotics. Traditional TKCs use Mueller-Hinton broth (MHB), which lacks specific plasma components that could potentially influence the bacterial growth and killing dynamics, and affect translation to in vivo. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of plasma on the PKPD characterisation of two antibiotics; cefazolin and clindamycin.

Prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato infection in the Czech Republic.

Introduction: Lyme borreliosis (LB), an infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl), is the most common tick-borne disease in Europe. To further characterize the LB burden in the Czech Republic, we conducted a seroprevalence study and estimated the incidence of symptomatic Bbsl infections.

Methods: Anti-Bbsl IgM and IgG antibodies were detected in sera collected from the adult population in 2011 -2012 by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunoblot tests at the National Reference Laboratory.

Navigating choices: understanding the decision-making journey of patients with localised kidney cancer.

Objective: To explore patients' experience of decision making regarding treatment of localised kidney cancer.

Methods: A total of 21 patients with localised kidney cancer, across three countries, participated in either four focus groups or seven semi-structured interviews that lasted on average 2 h. Focus groups and interviews were all conducted in the participants' native language, recorded, transcribed and (if applicable) translated into English.

Inflammation in Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy-Related Transient Focal Neurological Episodes.

Transient focal neurological episodes (TFNE), often associated with convexity subarachnoid hemorrhage (cSAH), are common in cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), but their pathophysiology remains incompletely understood. In six patients with unremitting TFNE, using high-resolution post-contrast magnetic resonance imaging and vessel wall imaging (VWI), we found various combinations of transient leptomeningeal, parenchymal and vessel wall enhancement; in 5 of 6 the enhancement included regions corresponding anatomically to symptoms. Three patients had resolution of TFNE and enhancement (2 with corticosteroid treatment, 1 without).

Insights Into Phylogeny, Diversity and Functional Potential of Poseidoniales Viruses.

Viruses infecting archaea play significant ecological roles in marine ecosystems through host infection and lysis, yet they have remained an underexplored component of the virosphere. In this study, we recovered 451 archaeal viruses from a subtropical estuary, identifying 63 that are associated with the dominant marine order Poseidoniales (Marine Group II Archaea). Phylogenetic analyses of a subset of complete and nearly-complete viral genomes assigned these viruses to the order Magrovirales, a lineage of Poseidoniales viruses, and identified a novel group of viruses distinct from Magrovirales.

Transcranial electrical evoked muscle potentials for pediatric neurosurgery: scoping review of stimulation techniques and success rates.

Purpose: The background of this scoping review is that pediatric neurosurgery in the vicinity of motor pathways is associated with the risk of motor tract damage. By measuring transcranial electrical evoked potentials in muscles (electromyogram) or from the spinal cord (epidural D-wave) functional disorders and impending damage can be detected during surgery and countermeasures can be initiated. The objective was to summarize stimulation techniques of transcranial electrical stimulation and the success rate of motor evoked potentials exclusively in children undergoing neurosurgery.

Hypoparathyroidism: Similarities and differences between Western and Eastern countries.

Backgroud: Hypoparathyroidism (hypoPT) is characterized by acute and chronic complications due to insufficient parathyroid hormone (PTH) production or action. Several management guidelines have been developed, but mostly based on evidence from Western countries. Data from Eastern countries have not been systematically compared with those from Western countries.

Recurrent pneumothoraces caused by a high-grade lung carcinoma with trophoblastic differentiation: a case report.

Gestational trophoblastic neoplasms are tumors that occur during pregnancy, while non-gestational trophoblastic tumors have a similar histology but are present outside of gestation. Literature reports several cases of non-gestational trophoblastic tumors of primary pulmonary origin, which pose diagnostic challenges and are associated with a poor prognosis. This report details a case of somatic high-grade carcinoma with trophoblastic differentiation primarily manifesting in the left lung with recurrent pneumothoraces.

Electrotherapy as treatment for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy - a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Electrotherapy has been investigated in chronic pain and diabetic peripheral neuropathy, however prospective trials in patients with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) are scarce.

Methods: Fifty-one patients with CIPN ≥ grade 1 subsequent to receiving platinum- and/or taxane-based chemotherapy types were randomized to 8 weeks of high tone external muscle stimulation (HTEMS) or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). The primary outcome were changes in the EORTC-QLQ-CIPN20 questionnaire.

Orientation-dependent photonic bandgaps in gold-dust weevil scales and their titania bioreplicates.

The scales of the gold-dust weevil are green because of three-dimensional diamond-type chitin-air photonic crystals with an average periodicity of about 430 nm and a chitin fill fraction of about 0.44. A single scale usually contains one to three crystallites with different lattice orientations.

Paired nerve stimulation with selective compensation effect.

Background: In this study we investigate the selective compensation of paired peripheral nerves in healthy humans, focusing on distinct axonal conduction velocities in different fibre types. Using paired associative stimulation (PAS) with adjustable parameters, we aimed to modulate and compensate for neuronal activity along the median nerve.

Methods: Six healthy volunteers (3 male, 3 female, aged: 22-49) participated in the current study.

Registries in allergy: Structure, target groups, and key findings of allergy-focused registries in Germany.

In allergology, clinical registries fill knowledge gaps of epidemiology, mechanisms of allergic diseases, and real-world treatment outcomes. Considering the continuous rise of allergic diseases worldwide, registries become increasingly important for the optimization and harmonization of patient care. In the current review, we present four ongoing allergy-focused registries initiated in Germany.

Exploratory miRNA profiling from serum and bone tissue of mice with T1D-induced bone loss.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) represents a significant health burden worldwide, with associated complications including bone fragility. Current clinical methods and biomarkers for assessing bone health and predicting fracture risk in T1D are limited and lack accuracy. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as potential biomarkers for predicting T1D-induced bone loss, although comprehensive profiling studies are lacking.

A new species of (Crustacea, Mysida) from the Canary and Cape Verde archipelagos.

Background: Within the subfamily Leptomysinae (fam. Mysidae), the tribe Mysidopsini has five here acknowledged genera and 74 extant species. It embraces the genera with six species from the coasts of the NW-Atlantic (Narragansett Bay to Florida), the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico; with two species from the SW-Atlantic off Brazilian shores and from the Pacific coast of Ecuador; with three species from the Caribbean, Gulf of California and southern California; with ten species from the Atlantic coasts of the USA to Brazil, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico and E-Pacific from California to Panama; and, finally, the globally occurring .

Opportunities and barriers for reimbursement of digital therapeutics in Austria: Findings From expert interviews.

Background: Digital therapeutics (DTx) are software-based interventions that aim to prevent or treat especially non-communicable diseases. Currently, no framework for reimbursement of DTx exists in Austria. The aim of this study was to gather a comprehensive perspective on regulatory considerations of Austrian stakeholders with regard to reimbursement of DTx and to outline strategies for establishing a national reimbursement framework.

Health behaviours and mobile intervention use in patients recruited from general practitioners' practices in rural Bavaria.

Individuals living in rural areas report poorer health outcomes, including obesity, compared to individuals living in urban areas. Amongst others, this is due to restricted access to opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity. Interventions are urgently needed to address this gap.

Introduction: The environmental impact of on-site conferences, with air travel as the primary contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, has prompted a surge in research in recent years. The objective of this report is to raise awareness and stimulate transformation in the organisation of meetings of the European Health Psychology Society (EHPS).

Methods: We conducted estimations of travel-related COeq emissions of EHPS conferences in 2019, 2022, and 2023, and performed projections for 2024 and 2025.

Skiing quality analysis of recreational skiers based on IMU data and self-assessment.

Alpine skiing is a popular sport in many countries and holds benefits in terms of health and well-being. At the same time alpine skiing is associated with a certain risk of accidents caused, among other things, by overestimating one's own skiing skills. Self-assessment of skiing skills is not trivial.
