Despite the study of BCR::ABL1-positive and -negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) providing seminal insights into cancer biology, tumor evolution and precision oncology over the past half century, significant challenges remain. MPNs are clonal hematopoietic stem cell-derived neoplasms with heterogenous clinical phenotypes and a clonal architecture which impacts the often-complex underlying genetics and microenvironment. The major driving molecular abnormalities have been well characterized, but debate on their role as disease-initiating molecular lesions continues.

Flower size evolution in the Southwest Pacific.

Ann Bot

January 2025

Division of BioInvasions, Global Change & Macroecology, University of Vienna, Austria.

Background And Aims: Despite accelerating interest in island evolution, the general evolutionary trajectories of island flowers remain poorly understood. In particular the island rule, which posits that small organisms become larger and large organisms to become smaller after island colonization, while tested in various plant traits, has never been tested in flower size. Here, we provide the first test for the island rule in flower size for animal- and wind-pollinated flowers, and the first evidence for generalized in-situ evolution of flower size on islands.

Biological invasions are a major threat to biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and nature's contributions to people worldwide. However, the effectiveness of invasive alien species (IAS) management measures and the progress toward achieving biodiversity targets remain uncertain due to limited and nonuniform data availability. Management success is usually assessed at a local level and documented in technical reports, often written in languages other than English, which makes such data notoriously difficult to collect at large geographic scales.

Anti-CD19 chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR) are a well-established treatment option for children and young adults suffering from relapsed/refractory B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Bridging therapy is used to control disease prior to start of lymphodepletion before CAR infusion and thereby improve efficacy of CAR therapy. However, the effect of different bridging strategies on outcome, side effects and response to CAR therapy is still poorly understood.

Error mitigation in brainbox quantum autoencoders.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Peter Grünberg Institute (PGI-2), Forschungszentrum Jülich, 52428, Jülich, Germany.

Quantum hardware faces noise challenges that disrupt multiqubit entangled states. Quantum autoencoder circuits with a single qubit bottleneck have demonstrated the capability to correct errors in noisy entangled states. By introducing slightly more complex structures in the bottleneck, referred to as brainboxes, the denoising process can occure more quickly and efficiently in the presence of stronger noise channels.

SMC motor proteins extrude DNA asymmetrically and can switch directions.

Cell

January 2025

Department of Bionanoscience, Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Delft, Delft University of Technology, Delft, the Netherlands. Electronic address:

Structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) complexes organize the genome via DNA loop extrusion. Although some SMCs were reported to do so symmetrically, reeling DNA from both sides into the extruded DNA loop simultaneously, others perform loop extrusion asymmetrically toward one direction only. The mechanism underlying this variability remains unclear.

January 2025

Institute of Chemistry of Renewable Resources, Department of Chemistry, BOKU University, Konrad-Lorenz-Straße 24, 3430, Tulln, Austria. Electronic address:

Chromatographic separations in combination with spectroscopic detectors are a main pillar of today's analytical chemistry. The recorded spectroscopic data is usually not shown in a typical chromatogram, therefore the contained additional information cannot be accessed readily by the analyst and is inspected in tedious additional routines, such as separate database searches. We developed a method to add colors to gas chromatograms with mass spectral detection.

Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) is usually considered to be a biofilm system consisting of granules only, although practical experience suggests that flocs and granules of various sizes co-exist. This study thus focused on understanding the contribution of flocs and granules of various sizes to nitrification in a full-scale AGS-based wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) operated as a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The size distribution in terms of total suspended solids (TSS) and the distribution of the nitrifying communities and activities were monitored over 14 months.

Spoilage characteristics of sous-vide beef caused by Clostridium estertheticum.

Int J Food Microbiol

January 2025

Unit of Food Hygiene and Technology, Centre for Food Science and Veterinary Public Health, University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna, Veterinaerplatz 1, 1210 Vienna, Austria.

The increasing popularity of sous-vide (SV) cooking necessitates research into the microbiological quality, sensory changes, and shelf life of SV products. Studies show that SV cooking significantly reduces the levels of meat microbiota and pathogens, positively affecting the shelf life and safety of SV products. However, the meat spoilage organism Clostridium estertheticum can survive SV cooking as it can produce heat-tolerant spores.
