Research Question: What are the effects of pipette- versus laser-assisted artificial blastocyst collapse (ABC) on the morphokinetics of warmed blastocyst re-expansion, and what is the potential effect on treatment outcomes?

Design: Surplus blastocysts were extracted from 203 patients. These were divided into three groups: study group A, artificial collapsed by the aspiration of blastocoel fluid with a pipette; study group B, trophectoderm opened with a laser pulse; control group, no manipulation before vitrification was performed. During the 5-year study period, 257 associated single-warm blastocyst transfers were scheduled.

In this brief contribution-happily afforded by the 20th anniversary of Physics of Life Reviews-we take the opportunity to reflect on our earlier published paper, which had introduced a theoretical framework, the VIMAP (Vienna Integrated Model of (Top-Down and Bottom-up processes in) Art Perception; (Pelowski et al., [1])) that has come to represent a major basis for organizing, anticipating, and empirically investigating the nuanced, multivariate visual art experience. We look back at the original model and its hypotheses, especially as these regard distinct "outcomes," which we had argued may provide a superstructure of supraordinate, shared varieties of art experience detected across individual meetings of viewer, context, and artworks.

Polymer Thermophoresis by Mesoscale Simulations.

Macromolecules

December 2024

Faculty of Physics, University of Vienna, Boltzmanngasse 5, 1090 Vienna, Austria.

We employ mesoscopic simulations to study the thermophoretic motion of polymers in a solvent via multiparticle collision dynamics (MPCD). As the usual solvent-monomer collision rules employed in MPCD involving polymers fail to cause thermophoresis, we extend the technique by introducing explicit solvent-monomer interactions, while the solvent molecules remain ideal with respect to one another. We find that with purely repulsive polymer-solvent interaction, the polymer exhibits thermophilic behavior, whereas to display thermophobic behavior, the polymer-solvent potential requires the presence of attractions between solvent particles and monomers, in accordance with previous experimental findings.

Health is a multidimensional phenomenon encompassing physical, mental, social, and spiritual aspects. Therefore, it is only logical that good care should be holistic and include all these dimensions. However, when examining the current field of health and care robotics, the spiritual aspect is notably neglected.

Introduction: Motor Imagery (MI) Electroencephalography (EEG) signals are non-stationary and dynamic physiological signals which have low signal-to-noise ratio. Hence, it is difficult to achieve high classification accuracy. Although various machine learning methods have already proven useful to that effect, the use of many features and ineffective EEG channels often leads to a complex structure of classifier algorithms.

Article Synopsis
  • Preeclampsia (PE) is linked to reduced blood flow to the placenta, which can cause heart function changes in pregnant women; this study investigates these cardiac characteristics and their relationship with NT-proBNP levels.
  • A retrospective analysis of 65 PE-diagnosed pregnant women was conducted using echocardiography, revealing normal left ventricular size and function, but impaired longitudinal contractility and borderline left atrial size.
  • Increased NT-proBNP levels were associated with lower gestational age at delivery and were indicative of maternal cardiac changes, with a high preterm birth rate due to worsening PE or fetal health issues linked to placental insufficiency.

Background: It is still unknown if the double-femoral tunnel technique (Arciero [ARC]) provides better stability as compared with the single-femoral tunnel technique (modified Larson [LAR]) in posterolateral corner reconstruction. The ideal angle of fixation of the popliteofibular strand in ARC is also unknown.

Hypotheses: The ARC provides greater external rotation (ER) stability than the LAR (hypothesis 1); there is no difference in varus rotation (VR) stability between LAR and ARC (hypothesis 2); and femoral fixation of the popliteofibular strand at 60° during the ARC leads to greater ER stability than fixation at 30° or 90° of knee flexion (hypothesis 3).

Remission of asthma can occur as part of the natural history of the disease; however, the use of biologics can result in disease remission in some patients. In this post hoc analysis of the RELIght study, we aimed to evaluate clinical remission in real life among patients treated with mepolizumab, to detect possible differences between "remitters" and "nonremitters," and to evaluate possible predictors of remission. Clinical remission was defined as the absence of asthma exacerbations, discontinuation of oral corticosteroids (OCS), achievement of asthma control (Asthma Control Test [ACT] ≥ 20), and stable or improved lung function.

Shanghai Tenth People's Hospital, Institute for Infectious Diseases and Vaccine Development, School of Medicine, Tongji University, Shanghai, China.

Adult Schistosoma produces a large number of eggs that play essential roles in host pathology and disease dissemination. Consequently, understanding the mechanisms of sexual maturation and egg production may open a new avenue for controlling schistosomiasis. Here, we describe that Bantam miRNA and miR-1989 regulate Wnt signaling pathway by targeting Frizzled-5/7/9, which is involved in ovarian development and oviposition.

Adequate secondary prevention in survivors of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) who also have atrial fibrillation (AF) is a long-standing clinical dilemma because these patients are at increased risk of recurrent ICH as well as of ischemic stroke. The efficacy and safety of oral anticoagulation, the standard preventive medication for ischemic stroke patients with AF, in ICH patients with AF are uncertain. PRESTIGE-AF is an international, phase 3b, multi-center, randomized, open, blinded end-point assessment (PROBE) clinical trial that compared the efficacy and safety of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) with no DOAC (either no antithrombotic treatment or any antiplatelet drug).
