Socioeconomic inequalities in depression and the role of job conditions in China.

Front Public Health

December 2024

Asian Demographic Research Institute, School of Sociology and Political Sciences, Shanghai University, Shanghai, China.

Background: The rising prevalence of depression in China, coupled with a tightening job market, highlights concern for the workforce's mental health. Although socioeconomic inequalities in depression have been well documented in high-income countries, the association between socioeconomic status (SES) and depression, along with its work-related mediators, has not been sufficiently studied in China.

Methods: The study participants are 6,536 non-agriculturally employed working adults from the 2020 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS).

Institute of Semiconductor and Solid State Physics, Johannes Kepler University Linz, Altenberger Straße 69, 4040, Linz, Austria.

Germanium (Ge), the next-in-line group-IV material, bears great potential to add functionality and performance to next-generation nanoelectronics and solid-state quantum transport based on silicon (Si) technology. Here, we investigate the direct epitaxial growth of two-dimensional high-quality crystalline Ge layers on Si deposited at ultralow growth temperatures ( = 100-350 °C) and pristine growth pressures (≲10 mbar). First, we show that a decreasing does not degrade the crystal quality of homoepitaxial Ge/Ge(001) by comparing the point defect density using positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy.

Plasma flows with enhanced dynamic pressure, known as magnetosheath jets, are often found downstream of collisionless shocks. As they propagate through the magnetosheath, they interact with the surrounding plasma, shaping its properties, and potentially becoming geoeffective upon reaching the magnetopause. In recent years (since 2016), new research has produced vital results that have significantly enhanced our understanding on many aspects of jets.

Influence of Raster Orientation and Feeding Rate on the Mechanical Properties of Short Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polyamide Printed by Fused-Filament Fabrication.

3D Print Addit Manuf

December 2024

Institute of Materials Science, Joining and Forming (IMAT), BMK Endowed Professorship for Aviation, Graz University of Technology, Graz, Austria.

Fused-filament fabrication (FFF) is an extremely popular additive manufacturing process due to its affordability, relative ease to operate, and wide range of possible materials. It is also notorious for the hundreds of different process variables, which often are overlooked in favor of parameters considered to be more relevant for mechanical performance, such as printing and bed temperatures, printing speed, and layer height. Thus, this study is aimed at evaluating some of the less frequently studied process variables, namely raster orientation angles (and their stacking sequence) and feeding rate.

Accurate diagnosis of regional atmospheric and surface energy budgets is critical for understanding the spatial distribution of heat uptake associated with the Earth's energy imbalance (EEI). This contribution discusses frameworks and methods for consistent evaluation of key quantities of those budgets using observationally constrained data sets. It thereby touches upon assumptions made in data products which have implications for these evaluations.

The global seasonal cycle of energy in Earth's climate system is quantified using observations and reanalyses. After removing long-term trends, net energy entering and exiting the climate system at the top of the atmosphere (TOA) should agree with the sum of energy entering and exiting the ocean, atmosphere, land, and ice over the course of an average year. Achieving such a balanced budget with observations has been challenging.

This study uses an oceanic energy budget to estimate the ocean heat transport convergence in the North Atlantic during 2005-2018. The horizontal convergence of the ocean heat transport is estimated using ocean heat content tendency primarily derived from satellite altimetry combined with space gravimetry. The net surface energy fluxes are inferred from mass-corrected divergence of atmospheric energy transport and tendency of the ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis combined with top-of-the-atmosphere radiative fluxes from the clouds and the Earth's radiant energy system project.

Center for Pathobiochemistry and Genetics, Institute of Medical Genetics, Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria; Exposome Austria, Research Infrastructure and National EIRENE Hub, Austria.

PER: and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of synthetic organic chemicals that are ubiquitous environmental pollutants. Among PFAS, perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA) is one of the most toxic compounds, but the molecular basis behind its toxicity is not fully understood. In an interspecies comparison with placental cells (HTR-8/SVneo) and zebrafish embryos, we demonstrate that PFDA induces mitochondrial dysfunction and impairs fatty acid β-oxidation.

An autocrine synergistic desmin-SPARC network promotes cardiomyogenesis in cardiac stem cells.

Cells Dev

Max Perutz Labs, Vienna Biocenter Campus (VBC), Vienna, Austria; Medical University of Vienna, Center for Medical Biochemistry, Department of Molecular Biology, Vienna, Austria. Electronic address:

The mammalian heart contains cardiac stem cells throughout life, but it has not been possible to harness or stimulate these cells to repair damaged myocardium in vivo. Assuming physiological relevance of these cells, which have evolved and have been maintained throughout mammalian evolution, we hypothesize that cardiac stem cells may contribute to cardiomyogenesis in an unorthodox manner. Since the intermediate filament protein desmin and the matricellular Secreted Protein Acidic and Rich in Cysteine (SPARC) promote cardiomyogenic differentiation during embryogenesis in a cell-autonomous and paracrine manner, respectively, we focus on their genes and employ mouse embryonic and cardiac stem cell lines as in vitro models to ask whether desmin and SPARC cooperatively influence cardiomyogenesis in cardiac stem and progenitor cells.

Ordinary differential equation models such as the classical SIR model are widely used in epidemiology to study and predict infectious disease dynamics. However, these models typically assume that populations are homogeneously mixed, ignoring possible variations in disease prevalence due to spatial heterogeneity. To address this issue, reaction-diffusion models have been proposed as an alternative approach to modeling spatially continuous populations in which individuals move in a diffusive manner.

Biomed Tech (Berl)

December 2024

Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (IKIM), University Hospital Essen (AöR), Essen, Germany.

Objectives: The shape is commonly used to describe the objects. State-of-the-art algorithms in medical imaging are predominantly diverging from computer vision, where voxel grids, meshes, point clouds, and implicit surface models are used. This is seen from the growing popularity of ShapeNet (51,300 models) and Princeton ModelNet (127,915 models).

The garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus) is a fat-storing mammal that undergoes annual periods of hibernation to mitigate the effects of food scarcity, low ambient temperatures, and reduced photoperiod that characterize winter. Like other hibernating species, this animal suppresses its metabolic rate by downregulating nonessential genes and processes in order to prolong available energy stores and limit waste accumulation throughout the season. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, single-stranded, noncoding RNAs that bind to mRNA and mediate post-transcriptional suppression, making miRNA ideal for modulating widespread changes in gene expression, including global downregulation typified by metabolic rate depression.

Isotopic pulse-labelling of photosynthate allows tracing of carbon (C) from tree canopies to belowground biota and calculations of its turnover in roots and recipient soil microorganisms. A high concentration of label is desirable, but is difficult to achieve in field studies of intact ecosystem patches with trees. Moreover, root systems of trees overlap considerably in most forests, which requires a large labelled area to minimize the impact of C allocated belowground by un-labelled trees.
