The present study aimed to determine whether a remotely delivered intervention, based on an individual case management, can reduce falls and their consequences in community-dwelling older people with a history of multiple falls. In this randomized controlled trial, 32 participants were randomized to the intervention group, which comprised a 16-week case management program involving a multidimensional assessment, targeted interventions according to the identified fall risk factors, and development of individualized care plans. The intervention was performed by trained gerontologists, under weekly supervision of professionals with experience in falls.

Advancing specificity in delirium: The delirium subtyping initiative.

Alzheimers Dement

January 2024

Centre for Public Health, Queen's University Belfast, Block B, Institute of Clinical Sciences, Royal Victoria Hospital Site, Belfast, Northern Ireland.

Background: Delirium, a common syndrome with heterogeneous etiologies and clinical presentations, is associated with poor long-term outcomes. Recording and analyzing all delirium equally could be hindering the field's understanding of pathophysiology and identification of targeted treatments. Current delirium subtyping methods reflect clinically evident features but likely do not account for underlying biology.

Our purpose was to determine and compare the interobserver variability of 3 clinically frequently used radiotracers targeting the prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), namely F-DCFPyL, F-PSMA-1007, and Ga-PSMA-11, in primary prostate cancer (PCa) staging. Patients with newly diagnosed PCa in whom PSMA PET/CT was performed for primary staging purposes were retrospectively included. All PSMA PET/CT images were centrally overread within a high-volume PCa center, and original reports (from referring hospitals) were compared with overread reports (from the overreading hospital).

Many species of the gastropod genus have been named from northeastern Asia but scanty descriptions based predominantly on shells make it difficult to determine which are valid. This, plus the sporadic anatomical and genetic information available for many of these species has led to what may be described as an un-integrated taxonomy. In this situation, it is generally preferable to postpone dissection of rare and unusual specimens until relevant diagnostic characters can be established in broader studies.

To identify knowledge gaps regarding new-onset agitation and impulsivity prior to onset of cognitive impairment or dementia the International Society to Advance Alzheimer's Research and Treatment Neuropsychiatric Syndromes (NPS) Professional Interest Area conducted a scoping review. Extending a series of reviews exploring the pre-dementia risk syndrome Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI), we focused on late-onset agitation and impulsivity (the MBI impulse dyscontrol domain) and risk of incident cognitive decline and dementia. This scoping review of agitation and impulsivity pre-dementia syndromes summarizes the current biomedical literature in terms of epidemiology, diagnosis and measurement, neurobiology, neuroimaging, biomarkers, course and prognosis, treatment, and ongoing clinical trials.

The flying squirrels of the tribe Pteromyini (Family Sciuridae) currently include 15 genera of which the genus comprises two recognized species, Saha, 1981 and Sanamxay et al., 2013. These two species were each described from only one specimen that are separated from each other by 1,250 kilometres in southern Asia, where they occur in northeast India and central Lao PDR respectively.

The detection and identification of species of fungi in the environment using molecular methods heavily depends on reliable reference sequence databases. However, these databases are largely incomplete in terms of taxon coverage, and a significant effort is required from herbaria and living fungal collections for the mass-barcoding of well-identified and well-curated fungal specimens or strains. Here, a PacBio amplicon sequencing approach is applied to recent lichen herbarium specimens for the sequencing of the fungal ITS barcode, allowing a higher throughput sample processing than Sanger sequencing, which often required the use of cloning.

Background: In 2015, the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society published clinical diagnostic criteria for Parkinson's disease (PD). Although recent validation studies suggest high accuracy, one unmet need is for highly specific criteria for clinical trials in early/de novo PD.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to generate and test a PD diagnostic criteria termed "clinically established early PD.

This work describes the first imaging studies on a 1.0 Tesla inline MRI-Linac using a dedicated transmit/receive RF body coil that has been designed to be completely radio transparent and provide optimum imaging performance over a large patient opening. A series of experiments was performed on the MRI-Linac to investigate the performance and imaging characteristics of a new dedicated volumetric RF coil: (1) numerical electromagnetic simulations were used to measure transmit efficiency in two patient positions; (2) image quality metrics of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), ghosting and uniformity were assessed in a large diameter phantom with no radiation beam; (3) radiation induced effects were investigated in both the raw data (k-space) and image sequences acquired with simultaneous irradiation; (4) radiation dose was measured with and without image acquisition; (5) RF heating was studied using an MR-compatible fluoroptic thermometer and; (6) the in vivo image quality and versatility of the coil was demonstrated in normal healthy subjects for both supine and standing positions.

The world is geographically divided into hemispheres, continents and countries, with varying cultures in different regions. Asia, the largest of continents, has a variety of philosophically distinctive cultures and lifestyles, informing the norms of societies that are much different from cultures in other continents. These complexities in the societal norms in Asian cultures have created unique issues in development of ethics education in the region.

Addressing cultural diversity: the hepatitis B clinical specialist perspective.

Ethn Health

October 2019

a Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, La Trobe University, Melbourne , VIC , Australia.

Hepatitis B is a viral infection primarily affecting people from culturally diverse communities in Australia. While vaccination prevents infection, there is increasing mortality resulting from liver damage associated with chronic infection. Deficits in the national policy and clinical response to hepatitis B result in a low diagnosis rate, inadequate testing and diagnosis processes, and poor access to hepatitis B treatment services.

More than a virus: a qualitative study of the social implications of hepatitis B infection in China.

Int J Equity Health

August 2017

Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory, Director, WHO Regional Reference Laboratory for Hepatitis B, Doherty Institute, Melbourne, Australia.

Background: China has the largest absolute number of people living with hepatitis B with up to 300,000 people estimated to die each year from hepatitis B related diseases. Despite advances in immunisation, clinical management, and health policy, there is still a lack of accessible and affordable health care for people with hepatitis B. Through in-depth interviews, this study identifies the personal, social and economic impact of living with hepatitis B and considers the role of stigma and discrimination as barriers to effective clinical management of the disease.

MicroRNA-146a is upregulated in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Here, we show that the rho-associated, coiled-coil containing protein kinase 1 (ROCK1) is a target of microRNA-146a in neural cells. Knockdown of ROCK1 mimicked the effects of microRNA-146a overexpression and induced abnormal tau phosphorylation, which was associated with inhibition of phosphorylation of the phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN).

May 2016

University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia Liverpool Diabetes Collaborative Research Unit, Ingham Institute, Liverpool, NSW, Australia.

Aims: Recent studies have raised concerns regarding increased heart failure in patients on dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors. We examined whether dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, compared to non-incretin-based therapies, have differential effects on left ventricular and endothelial function in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Methods: A total of 25 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients commenced on a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor were compared with 50 matched controls.
