We conducted individual-level pooled analyses and meta-analyses of cognitive assessments from eight prospective cohorts, comprising 2,105 patients and 1,432 controls from Argentina, Canada, Chile, Greece, India, Italy, Russia, and the UK. The meta-analysis found no differences by country of origin.

Introduction: The global prevalence of overweight and obesity has reached epidemic proportions amongst children and adolescents, with approximately one third of children in Europe being overweight or obese. There is a higher likelihood for overweight and obesity reported for vulnerable groups of children, also known as children in need. In May 2021, the M/V ship fire disaster led to the largest maritime spill of resin pellets (nurdles) and burnt plastic (pyroplastic). Field samples collected from beaches in Sri Lanka nearest to the ship comprised nurdles and pieces of pyroplastic. Three years later, the toxicity of the spilled material remains unresolved.

Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is a challenging complication following sphincter-preserving rectal surgery, characterized by bowel dysfunctions such as urgency, frequency, and incontinence. This case series investigates the potential role of lactose intolerance in exacerbating LARS symptoms. Three patients who developed LARS after rectal resections showed persistent symptoms despite conventional management with bulking agents, physiotherapy, and loperamide.

New onset insomnia is often experienced by patients during hospitalization due to environmental disruptions, pain and increased patient care activities. Patient distress arising from poor sleep quality and quantity often results in the prescribing of hypnotics. Melatonin use in hospital settings is common and is increasingly used for off label indications including primary insomnia in those aged < 55 years, prevention of delirium and to facilitate benzodiazepine discontinuation.

This article draws upon David McPherson's The Virtues of Limits (2021) to develop a virtue ethics for sustainability in healthcare. I explore how a virtuous appreciation of the value of healthcare resources can lead us to exercise stewardship in our use of those resources, whereas a failure to appreciate the value of resources can lead to irresponsible and unsustainable patterns of use.
