Work stress and professional quality of life in disability support workers: The mediating role of psychological flexibility.

Background: This study aimed to explore perceived work stress and its association with burnout, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction and the mediating effect of psychological flexibility on these relationships.

Method: Two hundred and fifty-one disability support workers across Australia reported on work stress, psychological flexibility, burnout, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction through an online anonymous survey.

Results: Perceived work stress was found to have a significant relationship with burnout, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction.

Preconditions influencing the development of post-secondary training programs in universities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Background: Research on post-secondary training for individuals with intellectual disabilities has generally focused on programs, with little consideration of the structures and mechanisms that give rise to them. This article adopts a critical realist perspective to comparatively analyse and theorise about the contextual structures contributing to the introduction of post-secondary training programs in universities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

Method: Six stages in critical realist explanatory research were followed.

A comparative analysis of the prevalence and predictors of chronic pain in older adults with and without intellectual disability in Australia.

Background: There is little research comparatively assessing prevalence of pain between older people either with or without intellectual disability. This paper explores health and social factors associated with chronic pain in these two groups.

Method: A cross-sectional survey was undertaken in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia.

Down syndrome or Rett syndrome in the family: Parental reflections on sibling experience.

Background: Siblings of children with intellectual disability have unique family experiences, varying by type of disability.

Methods: Parents of children with Down syndrome (156) or with Rett syndrome (149) completed questionnaires relating to sibling advantages and disadvantages, experiences of holidays and recreation, and perceived availability of parental time. Qualitative responses were analysed using thematic analysis.

Background: The rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has transformed the Australian funding landscape for individuals with disability and their families. Methods: The cognition and behavioural profiles of children funded under the NDIS ( = 58) were compared to children who had received block government funding (= 58).

The Back to Back Theatre film internship program for people with intellectual disability: A summative evaluation.

Background: Internships may be a successful pathway for increasing employment rates among people with intellectual disability. This paper presents a summative evaluation of a brief film internship program for people with intellectual disability.

Method: At the commencement and conclusion of the internship, semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight interns and 10 mentors.

The adaptation experience of families with children with developmental disabilities in Mainland China.

Background: Families of children with developmental disabilities face extraordinary changes in their life circumstances and needs that require adaptations to create sustainable and meaningful daily routines. The present study explored the adaptation of Chinese families of children with developmental disabilities from an ecocultural theoretical perspective.

Method: A total of 34 families of children with developmental disabilities were interviewed using the adapted Family Life Interview, and the data were analysed thematically.

Return to preinjury pivoting sports after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is different between males and females, as are the patient-reported reasons.

Purpose: To investigate return to sport (RTS) after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR), differences based on sex and concomitant meniscal repair, and identify reasons why patients do not RTS.

Methods: Overall, 232 patients undergoing ACLR, with or without concomitant meniscal repair, that were actively participating in pivoting sports at the time of injury, were prospectively recruited. At 2 years, return to preinjury pivoting sport was investigated and, if they had returned, whether they felt their performance was at (or better) or below preinjury status.

Educating the educated: The impact of educational interventions on knowledge, attitudes and confidence of healthcare professionals in caring for patients with intellectual disability: A systematic review.

Background: The attitudes, perceptions and inherent biases of healthcare professionals (HCPs) have the potential to influence and inform health outcomes of people with intellectual disability. This review aimed to identify what educational interventions have been conducted to improve the attitude, knowledge, and confidence of HCPs in caring for people with intellectual disability.

Method: A systematic literature review was conducted using Medline, ERIC and PsycINFO.

Whose voice is it anyway? Adults with intellectual disabilities and future planning: A scoping review of qualitative studies.

Background: Future planning is a way of supporting people with intellectual disabilities and their families to think about their support needs as both groups age. Adults with intellectual disabilities, family members, and service providers are often involved in planning processes. However, it is unclear whose perspectives dominate in the literature and how these might vary.

Challenges to accessing behaviour support services for people with intellectual disability before and after the NDIS.

Background: This study investigated the extent to which behaviour support services are accessible under Australia's National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Method: We conducted semi-structured interviews with families who support a member with an intellectual disability and challenging behaviour. We analysed this data with a supply and demand access framework initially designed for health care and described the lived experiences of participants and their families accessing behaviour supports.

An Australian online training and support program for caregivers of children and youth with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: Families linking with families.

Background: Australia has limited supports to help families where Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) impacts children and young people. National Organisation for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Australia (NOFASD), in conjunction with the University of Otago, New Zealand, piloted and established a 7-week online program to assist caregivers to develop strategies and supports to help their families live well in a disabling society.

Method: The online program, Families Linking with Families (FLWF), was delivered to 88 caregivers.

On-the-job training supports for people with intellectual disability employed in aged care.

Background: Traineeships have been proven to be beneficial vocational pathways for people with intellectual disability however to date the on-the-job training provision associated with traineeships has not been well documented.

Method: This study describes components of on-the-job training provided to eight people, most with intellectual disability undergoing traineeships for 12 months in four aged care services. Sheri et al.

Method: An audit of adults with Down syndrome attending a mainstream internal medicine outpatient clinic was undertaken to describe their biopsychosocial profile, identify previously developed reasonable adjustments to clinical service and to consider their alignment with comprehensive care.

Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly infectious transboundary emergency animal disease posing a significant threat to the global economy. Australia strengthened border security following the 2022 FMD outbreak in Indonesia allocating resources to promote biosecurity awareness and engagement. This study qualitatively investigated the impact of this extension on the biosecurity perceptions and practices of sheep producers in New South Wales, Australia.

Helminth extracellular vesicles co-opt host monocytes to drive T cell anergy.

Parasitic helminths secrete extracellular vesicles (EVs) into their host tissues to modulate immune responses, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We demonstrate that Ascaris EVs are efficiently internalised by monocytes in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells and increase the percentage of classical monocytes. Furthermore, EV treatment of monocytes induced a novel anti-inflammatory phenotype characterised by CD14, CD16, CC chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) cells.

This report describes the development of oesophagitis and oesophageal stricture in a dog secondary to anaphylaxis. A 9-month-old male entire Brussels Griffon presented in anaphylactic shock after exposure to Hymenoptera species (Sp). The dog had a history of an anaphylactic reaction after exposure to Hymenoptera, successfully managed with antihistamines and dexamethasone.

Importance of transgender nuances in research and advocacy: Reply to Morgenroth (2025) and Tate (2025).

In their responses to our paper 'Conceptualizing transgender experiences in psychology: Do we have a "true" gender?' (The British Journal of Psychology, 2024, 115, 723), Tate (2025) and Morgenroth (2025) provide reflections on the importance of nuance when researching gender and in transgender advocacy. In this reply, I note where this paper is situated in the literature and engage in a discussion of the role of definitions in transgender advocacy. Over-reliance on an individual's true gender when evaluating transgender people's legitimacy may exclude individuals whose gender is not understandable as 'true' to a cisgender majority.

Patient-driven personal importation in the face of cost barriers to care: can we do better?

Australia has a robust public health system that helps to make medicines affordable. However, evidence shows that a significant proportion of Australians still cannot afford medicines prescribed to them and that some patients import medicines from abroad as a result. The strongest predictor of whether patients import medicines is whether they have discussed it with their doctor.
