There has been a major growth in the development of plant-based meat alternatives (PBMA) in recent years. However, current PBMA often contain ultra processed ingredients and numerous additives to be able to mimic animal-based meat (ABM) including the meaty (umami) flavour, characteristic firm/chewy structure and juicy mouthfeel. In this review, the potential of ancient fermentation techniques as a minimally processed alternative to ABM and current PBMA are explored.

Lithium (Li) metal batteries hold great promise for next-generation energy storage due to their high energy density. However, their application is hindered by uncontrollable Li plating/stripping, leading to limited cycle life, especially under practical conditions with a low negative/positive (N/P) capacity ratio. Here, it is demonstrated that stable cycling of low N/P ratio Li metal batteries can be realized by harnessing hetero-interfacial redox chemistry to regulate Li nucleation and deposition behavior.

There is growing interest in the use of single cell proteins (SCPs) derived from methanotrophic bacteria for inclusion in aquafeed to reduce reliance on other, potentially less sustainable proteins. This two-part experiment aimed to investigate first (i) the dose effect of replacing soy protein concentrate with SCP in Australian hybrid abalone diets () and second, (ii) the potential for improved palatability of the SCP by using commercially produced liquid protein hydrolysate (PH). This was assessed in a 2 × 2 factorial experimental design.

Background: Diabetic wounds pose significant clinical challenges due to impaired healing processes, often resulting in chronic, nonhealing ulcers. Asiaticoside (AC), a natural triterpene derivative from , has demonstrated notable anti-inflammatory and wound-healing properties. However, the synergistic effects of nitric oxide (NO)-a recognized promoter of wound healing-combined with AC in treating diabetic wounds remain inadequately explored.

Background: Flexible tunnels are the second most common obstacle on all dog agility courses, surpassed only by jumps. There has been a lot of debate and concern regarding risk factors associated with slips, falls and delayed exits (unseen slips, missteps, trips, falls). However, only one study was found which focused on the tunnel-related injuries, and it relied on handler reporting and did not consider base rates of the risk factors.

Purpose: People with resistance to thyroid hormone due to defective thyroid receptor β (RTHβ) exhibit adverse cardiovascular outcomes and premature mortality. Whether this reflects increased global cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk or hyperthyroxinemia-associated effects on cardiac rhythm and contractility is unknown. We determined CVD risk and plasma N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentrations as a marker of reduced cardiac function in 99 individuals (mean age 41 years, 37% males) with RTHβ.

Background: The effects of noise on the vestibular and balance function are under-studied. Studies have demonstrated that like the cochlea, the otolith organs are also sensitive to sound but the exact mechanism is unclear. Both impulse and continuous noise exposure may damage the cochlear and/or vestibular organ and lead to the formation of endolymphatic hydrops.

Background: In people living with polycystic kidney disease (PKD), physical inactivity may contribute to poor health-related quality of life (HRQoL). To date, no research has elucidated the impact of a PKD-specific physical activity programme on HRQoL and physical health. This substudy of the Kidney BEAM Trial evaluated the impact of a PKD-specific 12-week educational and physical activity digital health intervention for people living with PKD.

Asthma is a common and complex syndrome, and a major cause of morbidity and healthcare costs. Clinicians have an array of evidence-based investigations and effective interventions at their disposal, but outcomes have not improved as much as trial evidence would suggest they could. This article discusses drivers behind this discrepancy using illustrative examples to highlight information gaps and barriers that impair the delivery of community and emergency asthma care and appropriate referral to specialist asthma services.

This case highlights characteristic CT imaging findings, emphasizing the need for awareness among clinicians and radiologists. Recognizing this pattern can aid in diagnosis, prognostication, and appropriate referral for palliative management.

Adolescence is a vulnerable period for the onset of mental disorders and risk behaviours. Whole-school interventions hold vast potential in improving mental health and preventing risk behaviours in this developmentally-sensitive cohort. Modelled on the World Health Organisation's Health-Promoting Schools Framework, whole-school interventions aspire for change across eight domains: (i) school curriculum, (ii) school social-emotional environment, (iii) school physical environment, (iv) school governance and leadership, (v) school policies and resources, (vi) school and community partnerships, (vii) school health services and (viii) government policies and resources.

Teunissen (J Geod 98(83):1-16, 2024) proposed the ambiguity-resolved (AR) detection theory for GNSS mixed-integer model validation. In this contribution, we study the performance of the AR detector through analysis and simulation experiments and compare it with the ambiguity-float (AF) and ambiguity-known (AK) detectors. We describe how the detectors can be implemented and how to evaluate their performance by computing the power as functions of the model misspecifications' size.

Ratiometric and single-wavelength fluorophores are limited in their ability to provide basal level activity prior to treatment. This study presents a novel approach to characterise cell-wide basal activity of calcium using first and second harmonic spectral phasor analysis. Cells stained with the single-wavelength calcium fluorophore Oregon Green™ BAPTA 1-AM exhibited significant differences in wavelength or width in the nucleus, cytoplasm and membrane under basal conditions.

Issue Addressed: Individuals engage in volunteer activities due to a range of intrinsic, extrinsic, and altruistic factors; and this can have a positive impact on their subjective wellbeing. Within a school context, mentoring programs can connect adult volunteers with students, to provide social and/or academic support; however, evaluation data related to these programs is limited and often focused on student perspectives. This paper explores EdConnect volunteers' perspective on volunteering in primary and secondary schools in Western Australia and Victoria.

Objectives: The impact of conotruncal anomalies (CTAs), including tetralogy of Fallot, truncus arteriosus, ventriculo-arterial discordance, double outlet right ventricle (DORV), and interrupted aortic arch type B, on long-term outcomes remains poorly described in the Fontan cohort. We sought to review the outcomes of Fontan patients with conotruncal anomalies in Australia and New Zealand.
Methods: We reviewed the data from 1835 patients who underwent a Fontan operation between 1975 and 2023 from the Australia and New Zealand Fontan Registry.

Background: Pediatric anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) in skeletally immature patients is still controversially debated, with several gaps in its literature. More information is needed about the role of concomitant meniscal injuries in postoperative outcomes and return to pre-injury sports level (RTS).
Methods: Fifty skeletally immature patients who underwent ACLR were enrolled prospectively: 21 had meniscal injury additionally, and 29 did not.

The vasa vasorum (VV) have gathered considerable interest over the last decade due to its role in vascular wall biology and pathology; however, while the coronary VV are relatively well studied, the anatomy of peripheral VV, such as those of the aorta, remains poorly described, hampering knowledge of their role in peripheral vascular diseases. Through careful retrieval of the porcine thoracic aorta and successful microthrombi removal, the thoracic aorta was perfused with BriteVu™ followed by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scanning to image the VV and obtain a 3D reconstruction. We used commercially available software and its thresholding algorithms.
