The gut microbiota is a crucial link between diet and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Using fecal metaproteomics, a method that concurrently captures human gut and microbiome proteins, we determined the crosstalk between gut microbiome, diet, gut health, and CVD. Traditional CVD risk factors (age, BMI, sex, blood pressure) explained < 10% of the proteome variance.

Sea ice is a key element of the global Earth system, with a major impact on global climate and regional weather. Unfortunately, accurate sea ice modeling is challenging due to the diversity and complexity of underlying physics happening there, and a relative lack of ground truth observations. This is especially true for the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ), which is the area where sea ice is affected by incoming ocean waves.

Knowledge about seafloor depth, or bathymetry, is crucial for various marine activities, including scientific research, offshore industry, safety of navigation, and ocean exploration. Mapping the central Arctic Ocean is challenging due to the presence of perennial sea ice, which limits data collection to icebreakers, submarines, and drifting ice stations. The International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) was initiated in 1997 with the goal of updating the Arctic Ocean bathymetric portrayal.

The theory of preloading: A cognitive-behavioural motivational model.

Harm Reduct J

December 2024

School of Applied Psychology, Griffith University, 176 Messines Ridge Road, Mt Gravatt, QLD, 4122, Australia.

Preloading of alcohol and/or drugs before an event has been examined in the research literature for the past two decades. Despite the considerable interest and scrutiny on the behaviour, there are limited, if any, attempts to conceptualise a theoretical understanding of why people preload before an event. Here we propose a Theory of Preloading (TOP)-a general cognitive-behavioural motivational model for alcohol and drug preloading.

Introduction: The clinical, research and advocacy communities for Rett syndrome are striving to achieve clinical trial readiness, including having fit-for-purpose clinical outcome assessments. This study aimed to (1) describe psychometric properties of clinical outcome assessment for Rett syndrome and (2) identify what is needed to ensure that fit-for-purpose clinical outcome assessments are available for clinical trials.

Methods: Clinical outcome assessments for the top 10 priority domains identified in the Voice of the Patient Report for Rett syndrome were compiled and available psychometric data were extracted.

Background: Life satisfaction, one promising health asset, is associated with reduced risk of several chronic diseases and mortality. Mental health conditions and quality of life (QoL) are important aspects of well-being in late life and are significantly associated with life satisfaction. Despite the complex interrelationships between mental health, QoL and life satisfaction, the current literature has evaluated the simple association between them and failed to consider the complex pathways among these variables, especially among the older population.

Enhancing evidence-based practice in radiography education: Evaluation of an applied curriculum intervention.

Radiography (Lond)

December 2024

Sydney School of Health Science, University of Sydney, NSW, Australia. Electronic address:

Introduction: It is imperative that radiography graduates are taught to effectively apply evidence-based practice (EBP) in their clinical careers. Teaching the concept is challenging, as it requires educators to embed and scaffold knowledge and skills across the EBP cycle throughout both academic and clinical curricula. The objective of this study was to evaluate an overarching curriculum level intervention that aimed to enhance student radiographers' knowledge, skills, attitudes and practices towards EBP.

Clinical course and management of pediatric gastroduodenal perforation beyond neonatal period.

Pediatr Neonatol

December 2024

Department of Pediatric Surgery, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, Japan. Electronic address:

Background: The treatments and outcomes of pediatric gastroduodenal perforations have rarely been described.

Methods: We retrospectively identified 515 patients aged 28 days to 17 years who were hospitalized for gastroduodenal perforation between July 2010 and March 2021 using a nationwide inpatient database. We compared characteristics, treatments, and outcomes for pediatric gastroduodenal perforation between children aged <7 years (n = 38) and ≥7 years (n = 477).

Electronic address:

Metabolic reprogramming occurs in cardiomyopathy and heart failure contributing to progression of the disease. Activation of cardiac Hippo pathway signaling has been implicated in mediating mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic reprogramming in cardiomyopathy, albeit influence of Hippo pathway on lipid profile is unclear. Using a dual-omics approach, we determined alterations of cardiac lipids in a mouse model of cardiomyopathy due to enhanced Hippo signaling and explored molecular mechanisms.

December 2024

Center of Super-Resolution Optics and Chongqing Engineering Research Center of High-Resolution and Three-Dimensional Dynamic Imaging Technology, Chongqing Institute of Green and Intelligent Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chongqing 400714, China; Chongqing School, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chongqing 400714, China. Electronic address:

Terahertz (THz) radiation is widely recognized as a non-destructive, label-free, and highly- sensitive tool for biomedical detections. Nevertheless, its application in precision biomedical fields faces challenges due to poor spatial resolution caused by intrinsically long wavelength characteristics. THz scanning near-field optical microscopy (THz-SNOM), which surpasses the Rayleigh criterion, offers micrometer and nanometer-scale spatial resolution, making it possible to perform precise bioinspection with THz imaging.
