Perspectives of people with intellectual disability about their family networks: A comparison study with key support worker proxy reports.

Background: The Family Network Method - Intellectual Disability (FNM-ID) was used to compare perspectives of people with mild intellectual disability and their support workers on family networks of people with intellectual disability.

Method: 138 participants with mild intellectual disability and support workers were interviewed, using the FNM-ID. Paired -tests were used to examine differences in perspectives.

Barriers to the NDIS for people with intellectual disability and/or complex support needs involved with the criminal justice systems: The current state of literature.

Background: This study synthesises current literature concerning the barriers to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) faced by people with intellectual disability and/or complex support needs who are involved with the criminal justice system, or at risk of (re)involvement.

Method: Through targeted searches of key databases, 41 publications were identified from the scholarly and grey literature.

Results: Collected literature raises three main barriers to the NDIS.

Futures of adults with intellectual disability: Staff expectations.

The study reported here investigated the views of staff who worked with adults with intellectual disability regarding the likely future of such adults. Staff were provided with a short vignette portraying an adult with intellectual disability and asked to describe that individual's future in five years and then to indicate the likelihood of the individual's participation in aspects of adult life reflecting life as typically experienced by age peers in the general population. Responses suggested that staff did not expect the adults with intellectual disability to have the same experiences as their peers, although responses to direct questions about participation were more positive than those to the vignette.

A systematic review of emotion regulation measurement in children and adolescents diagnosed with intellectual disabilities.

Emotion regulation is a challenge for many, in particular children with intellectual disabilities. To support understanding and the development of interventions in this area it is essential to identify valid and reliable measures. This systematic review aimed to identify measures that assess all five emotion regulation domains as described by the process model of emotion regulation; situation selection, situation modification, attention deployment, cognitive control, and response modulation.

Cross-cultural preliminary validation of a measure of social vulnerability in people with intellectual disabilities.

Social vulnerability refers to the ways in which an individual is at risk of being victimised. The Test of Interpersonal Competences and Personal Vulnerability [TICPV] is an Australian assessment tool designed for adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) [Wilson et al. (1996).

Creating opportunities for convivial encounters for people with intellectual disabilities: "It looks like an accident".

"Convivial encounter" provides a new lens for understanding social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities, characterised by shared activity and friendly interactions with strangers without intellectual disabilities. Places, props and support practices facilitate incidental convivial encounters. This study explored processes for deliberately creating opportunities for such encounters.

Possibility and risk in encounter between people with and without intellectual disability.

Background: Unpredictability, the risk of harm and possibility of rewards, are integral elements of encounter. Risk literature offers insight on the complex ways in which risk perceptions and attunements shape behaviours and interactions in encounter between people with and without intellectual disability.

Method: The paper draws on risk literature, encounter literature, and examples from the authors' previously published studies on encounter and work integrated social enterprises.

Parental strategies that support adults with intellectual disabilities to explore decision preferences, constraints and consequences.

Background: Supporting participation in decision making is complex, dynamic and multifactorial. The aim of this study was to understand more about the difficulties parents of adults with intellectual disabilities experienced in providing decision support and their strategies for resolving them.

Method: Participants were 23 parents who regularly provided decision support for their adult with intellectual disabilities.

Forming and supporting circles of support for people with intellectual disabilities - a comparative case analysis.

Background: Building Circles of Support is an innovative strategy for developing natural support networks. This study explored some of the ambiguity in the conceptualisations, operational elements, and perceived outcomes of Circles of Support programs.

Method: A comparative case study of three Australian Circles of Support programs was conducted.

Patterns of group home culture in organisations supporting people with intellectual disabilities: A cross-sectional study.

Background: Organisational culture in group homes for people with intellectual disabilities has been identified as an influence on service delivery and staff behaviour. The aim was to examine patterns of culture across group homes in disability organisations.

Method: The Group Home Culture Scale (GHCS) was used to measure staff perceptions of culture.

A survey of Registered Nurses' educational experiences and self-perceived capability to care for people with intellectual disability and/or autism spectrum disorder.

Aims And Objectives: To survey the educational experience of Registered Nurses in Australia, at undergraduate, post graduate and continuing professional development levels.

Background: It has been previously demonstrated that nurses feel unprepared to care for people with intellectually disability and/or autism spectrum disorder in mainstream clinical settings. Specific undergraduate pre-registration curricula content in this domain has been identified to be low in volume, and in the absence of any studies to determine it, it has been presumed that it has diminished over time.

Identifying important persons in the promotion of positive behaviour support (PBS) in disability services: A social network analysis.

Background: Little is known about networks for positive behaviour support (PBS) in disability services. This study explores a PBS network to identify influential persons in its promotion and communication.

Methods: Quantitative sociometric methods were used to identify persons who occupy positions of either boundary spanning (those that link people and groups) and/or opinion leadership (those that are sought for advice).

Examining potential predictors of attention training outcomes in children with intellectual and developmental disorders.

Responses to digital cognitive training interventions vary greatly among children with intellectual and developmental disorders (IDD). Investigating possible predictors of improvements following training is vital in ascertaining which individuals benefit from these interventions. Seventy-three children (4-11 years) with IDD completed attention training or a placebo program for 5 weeks.

The impact of physical activity and sport programs on community participation for people with intellectual disability: A systematic review.

This review examined the impact of participation in an intentional physical activity or sport program on community participation and inclusion for people with intellectual disability. Five electronic databases (PsychINFO, PubMed, Medline, CINAHL, AMED) were systematically searched for papers relating to intellectual disability, intentional physical activity, and community inclusion. There were nine eligible papers reporting on seven unique studies conducted in North America, Europe and Australia.

Exploring the complexity of implementing National Disability Insurance Scheme plans for adults with intellectual disability: Parents' perspectives.

Background: With the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), creation and implementation of participants' plans are becoming a research focus. As many families facilitate the implementation of plans, it is important to understand the enablers and barriers to this process.

Method: This study investigated the experiences of 20 family groups with adult participants with intellectual disability as they implemented their NDIS plans.

A process of decision-making support: Exploring supported decision-making practice in Canada.

Canada was the first country to develop legal mechanisms that allow for supported decision making, and little research has explored how decision making is supported in this context. This research aimed to understand how seven people with intellectual disabilities, living in two Canadian provinces, were supported with their decision making. The research used constructivist grounded theory methodology, interviewing and observing the decision making of seven people with mild to severe intellectual disabilities and 25 decision supporters.

What is "fair and reasonable"? Norms and strategies guiding the distribution of assets by testators who have an adult child with intellectual disability.

Design: A systematic review and meta-analysis with meta-regression.

Setting And Participants: Older adults (mean age ≥55 years) residing in the community or in aged care facilities (ie, non-hospitalized) who had received an individualized medication review by a pharmacist.

Extracellular vesicles in dry eye disease and Sjogren syndrome: A systematic review on their diagnostic and therapeutic role.

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), defined as membrane-bound vesicles released from all cells, are being explored for their diagnostic and therapeutic role in dry eye disease (DED). We systematically shortlisted 32 articles on the role of EVs in diagnosing and treating DED. The systematic review covers the progress in the last 2 decades about the classification and isolation of EVs and their role in DED.

Psychometric properties of the Fear of Birth Scale in women in the perinatal period: A multicountry study.

Assessing Fear of Birth Scale's (FOBS) psychometric properties in the perinatal period using multicountry data is a step toward effectively screen clinically significant fear of childbirth (FOC) in maternal healthcare settings. FOBS psychometric properties were analyzed in women in the perinatal period using data from Australia, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, and Portugal. FOBS' reliability, criterion (known group and convergent), concurrent, predictive, and clinical validity were analyzed.
