Hardy-Rand-Rittler colour vision testing in cone and cone-rod dystrophies: correlation with structural and functional outcome measures.

Purpose: To determine how Hardy-Rand-Rittler (HRR) colour vision testing correlates with visual functional and structural assessments in Cone and Cone-Rod Dystrophy.

Methods: Thirty-four Cone and 69 Cone-Rod Dystrophy patients diagnosed by electroretinography (ERG) at the Save Sight Institute in Sydney were included in a retrospective analysis. Each patient's HRR colour vision test scores were compared with markers of cone and rod system function including visual acuity (VA), ERG responses, changes on Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Fundus Autofluorescence.

Promoting effective transitions: Primary school social-emotional competencies predict secondary school reading and numeracy achievement.

Background: The transition from primary to secondary school presents a challenging developmental milestone which often marks a decline in academic performance. Social-emotional skills are recognized as fundamental to academic success but longitudinal research is needed to determine the extent of their association over this transition period.

Aim: This study sought to determine the association between self-reported social-emotional competencies of students in their final year of primary school (Year 6; age ~11 years) and reading and numeracy performance in their first year of secondary school (Year 7; age ~12 years).

The bright and dark side of blue-enriched light on sleep and activity in older adults.

Low indoor light in urban housing can disrupt health and wellbeing, especially in older adults who experience reduced light sensitivity and sleep/circadian disruptions with natural aging. While controlled studies suggest that enhancing indoor lighting may alleviate the negative effects of reduced light sensitivity, evidence for this to be effective in the real world is lacking. This study investigates the effects of two light conditions on actigraphic rest-activity rhythms and subjective sleep in healthy older adults (≥ 60 years) living at home.

Cells-of-Origin of Breast Cancer and Intertumoral Heterogeneity.

Both intrinsic and extrinsic mechanisms underpin the profound intertumoral heterogeneity in breast cancer. Increasing evidence suggests that the intrinsic characteristics of breast epithelial precursor cells may influence tumour phenotype. These "cells-of-origin" of cancer preside in normal breast tissue and are uniquely susceptible to mutagenesis upon exposure to distinct oncogenic stimuli.

Uptake of Quitline Telephone Counselling by Women Who Smoke During Pregnancy.

Background: While many pregnant women accept referrals for smoking cessation support, the uptake of telephone counselling appointments is unknown.

Aims: To determine the uptake rate of Quitline appointments among Australian pregnant women who smoke after being referred by a healthcare provider.

Materials And Methods: Data on attendance at telephone counselling appointments, number of appointments attended, gestational age at referral, referral source and smoking cessation upon completion of the program were requested from Quitline.

Drug delivery strategies for the treatment of relapse behavior in substance use disorder- A systematic review.

Substance use disorders (SUDs) pose a significant global health challenge, with relapse being a major obstacle in achieving successful treatment outcomes. In recent years, drug delivery strategies have emerged as promising tools to improve treatment efficacy and patient compliance in the context of SUD. Here we explore a diverse range of drug delivery strategies that have been investigated for addressing relapse behavior in SUD.

A rare case of a zero-field single-ion magnet in a cerium(III) pseudo-icosahedral complex.

The synthesis and structural characterisation of [Ln(Tp)]I (1-Ln; Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd) (Tp = hydrotris(3-(2'-furyl)-pyrazol-1-yl)borate) have been reported as an isomorphous series adopting pseudo-icosahedral ligand field geometries. Continuous shape measurement (CShM) analyses on the crystal field environments of 1-Ln show the smallest values yet reported for complexes employing two hexadentate ligands (-scorpionate environments), with the smallest belonging to 1-La. Single-ion magnetism for 1-Ce, 1-Pr and 1-Nd was probed with ac magnetic susceptibility studies revealing slow magnetic relaxation for 1-Nd in applied magnetic fields and in zero-applied field for 1-Ce, which is a rare observation for Ce(III)-based single-ion magnets.

Digital learning resources are in increasing demand, especially in the light of the planned reform of the medical licensing regulations for 2028. In a pilot project, we digitised and evaluated a logbook for students in their practical year (PJ).The aim of this study is to evaluate the digital and non-digital PJ logbooks.

Perfectionism and compulsive exercise: a systematic review and preliminary meta-analysis.

Purpose: There is a consistent link between perfectionism and compulsive exercise, and both are implicated in the maintenance of eating disorders, however no meta-analysis to date has quantified this relationship. We hypothesised that there would be significant, small-moderate pooled correlations between perfectionism dimensions and compulsive exercise.

Methods: Published, peer-reviewed articles with standardised measures of perfectionism and the Compulsive Exercise Test were included.

Australian Preferences for Prenatal Screening: A Discrete Choice Experiment Comparing Metropolitan and Rural/Regional Areas.

Background: Non-invasive prenatal testing has the potential to be a useful genetic screening tool in Australia. However, concerns have been raised about its cost, commercial provision, the psychological impacts of the screening process, and disparities in access experienced by rural and regional communities.

Aims: The aims of this study are (1) to estimate Australian preferences for features of prenatal screening; (2) to explore potential variations in preferences between metropolitan and rural/regional communities; (3) to estimate the extent to which respondents are willing to trade-off between attributes, using willingness to pay (WTP) and willingness to wait estimates.

Analytical model for helical particle array assessment for EMI shielding applications.

This paper introduces an analytical method for studying power transmission through an infinite array of helical-shaped metal particles in a lossy dielectric medium. While the assessment of composite slabs' transmitted power has been extensively researched in the electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding field, many studies lack an adequate problem description. The primary inadequacy of these studies is the need for an analytical framework.

Advancements in gene therapies targeting mutant KRAS in cancers.

Mutations in the KRAS gene are well-known tumourigenic drivers of colorectal, pancreatic and lung cancers. Mechanistically, these mutations promote uncontrolled cell proliferation and alter the tumour microenvironment during early carcinoma stages. Given their critical carcinogenic functions, significant progress has been made in developing KRAS inhibitors for cancer treatment.

Personalized Dynamic Prediction Model for Biopsy Timing in Patients With Prostate Cancer During Active Surveillance.

Importance: Active surveillance (AS) for patients with prostate cancer (PC) often includes fixed repeat prostate biopsies that do not account for the varying risk of reclassification to significant disease. Given the invasive nature and potential complications of biopsies, a personalized approach is needed to balance the burden of biopsies with the risk of missing disease progression.

Objective: To develop and externally validate a dynamic model that predicts an individual's risk of PC reclassification during AS.

Long-term pulse pressure trajectories and risk of incident atrial fibrillation: the Tromsø Study.

Background And Aims: Sex-based differences in the association of long-term trends in pulse pressure with future risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) have been explored using data from the population-based Tromsø Study 1986-2016.

Methods: Women (n = 8331) and men (n = 7638) aged ≥20 years who attended at least two of the three Tromsø Study surveys conducted between 1986 and 2001 (the exposure period) were followed up for incident AF throughout 2016 (the follow-up period). Pulse pressure ≥60 mmHg was considered elevated.

Assessment of antenatal care quality in Ethiopia: Facility-based study using service provision assessment data.

Background: Antenatal care (ANC) coverage in low- and middle-income countries has increased in the past few decades. However, merely increasing care coverage may not enhance maternal and newborn health unless the recommended service components are also provided. Our aim was to assess the quality of ANC and its associated factors in Ethiopia.

Background: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the preferred treatment for symptomatic cholelithiasis and acute cholecystitis, with increasing applications even in severe cases. However, the possibility of postoperative endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) to manage choledocholithiasis or biliary injuries poses significant clinical challenges. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for ERCP incidence following emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy using advanced machine learning techniques.

An open source convolutional neural network to detect and localize distal radius fractures on plain radiographs.

Purpose: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are often initially assessed by junior doctors under time constraints, with limited supervision, risking significant consequences if missed. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) can aid in diagnosing fractures. This study aims to internally and externally validate an open source algorithm for the detection and localization of DRFs.

The effects of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus on bone health in chronic kidney disease.

Fracture is an under-recognized but common complication of diabetes mellitus, with an incidence approaching twofold in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and up to sevenfold in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) compared with that in the general population. Both T1DM and T2DM induce chronic hyperglycaemia, leading to the accumulation of advanced glycosylation end products that affect osteoblast function, increased collagen crosslinking and a senescence phenotype promoting inflammation. Together with an increased incidence of microvascular disease and an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency, these factors reduce bone quality, thereby increasing bone fragility.

Intercellular mitochondria transfer is an evolutionarily conserved process in which one cell delivers some of their mitochondria to another cell in the absence of cell division. This process has diverse functions depending on the cell types involved and physiological or disease context. Although mitochondria transfer was first shown to provide metabolic support to acceptor cells, recent studies have revealed diverse functions of mitochondria transfer, including, but not limited to, the maintenance of mitochondria quality of the donor cell and the regulation of tissue homeostasis and remodelling.

Enhancing energy autonomy of greenhouses with semi-transparent photovoltaic systems through a comparative study of battery storage systems.

Effective energy management is crucial in greenhouse farming to ensure efficient operations and optimal crop growth. This study investigates the energy autonomy-defined as the ratio of on-site energy generation to the total energy demand-of greenhouses equipped with semi-transparent photovoltaic (STPV) systems under two scenarios: with and without a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). STPV systems are beneficial because they generate energy while still allowing enough light to pass through for healthy plant development.

A Radiograph Dataset for the Classification, Localization, and Segmentation of Primary Bone Tumors.

Primary malignant bone tumors are the third highest cause of cancer-related mortality among patients under the age of 20. X-ray scan is the primary tool for detecting bone tumors. However, due to the varying morphologies of bone tumors, it is challenging for radiologists to make a definitive diagnosis based on radiographs.
