The lived experience of nurses transitioning to professional practice during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, newly graduating nurses have entered into rapidly changing clinical environments, experiencing healthcare in a manner for which they were not fully prepared. The purpose of this study is to describe the lived experience of these newly graduated registered nurses (RNs) who transitioned to practice during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to gain understanding of how to better prepare future graduates for similar situations. A multisite qualitative phenomenological design was used in this study of 12 frontline nurses that graduated in the spring of 2020 and transitioned into their new role as RNs.

Synthesis and Evaluation of Functionalized Aryl and Biaryl Isothiocyanates against Human MCF-7 Cells.

Organic isothiocyanates (ITCs) are a class of anticancer agents which naturally result from the enzymatic degradation of glucosinolates produced by Brassica vegetables. Previous studies have demonstrated that the structure of an ITC impacts its potency and mode(s) of anticancer properties, opening the way to preparation and evaluation of synthetic, non-natural ITC analogues. This study describes the preparation of a library of 79 non-natural ITC analogues intended to probe further structure-activity relationships for aryl ITCs and second-generation, functionalized biaryl ITC variants.

Assessing barriers to the career ladder and professional development for ethnic minority genetic counselors in the United States.

Ethnic diversity is not reflected within healthcare professions, including genetic counseling, where lack of growth and membership among minority colleagues extends to upper-level and executive roles. While diversity and inclusion-based topics have been emphasized, studies on potential barriers to career advancement in the field of genetic counseling have not received the same attention. Our study examined the current state of mentorship and sponsorship programs, the presence of diversity and inclusion initiatives, and opportunities for career advancement through the lens of a minority genetic counselor.

The lived experience of frontline nurses: COVID-19 in rural America.

Aim: This multisite study describes the lived experience of registered nurses (RNs) caring for coronavirus (COVID-19) patients during the pandemic in rural America.

Design: A qualitative phenomenological design was used.

Methods: From January to June 2021, using the purposeful sampling method, 19 frontline nurses were interviewed regarding their experience caring for seriously ill COVID-19 patients in three Upper Midwest tertiary care hospitals.

Visualizing protein big data using Python and Jupyter notebooks.

This article reports a workshop from the 2021 IUBMB/ASBMB Teaching Science with Big Data conference held virtually in June 2021 where participants learned to explore and visualize large quantities of protein PBD data using Jupyter notebooks and the Python programming language. This activity instructs participants using Jupyter notebooks, Python functions, loading data with Python, and visualize data using the matplotlib and seaborn Python plotting libraries. It also allows participants to explore large quantities of data to discover trends such amino acid abundance, dihedral angles patterns, and secondary protein structure trends.

Longitudinal association between cardiometabolic comorbidities and physical activity in middle aged and older adults living with HIV.

Objectives: Cardiometabolic comorbidities have been associated with lower levels of physical activity (PA) among people living with HIV (PLWH). However, little is known about the longitudinal relationship between cardiometabolic comorbidities and PA participation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the longitudinal association between cardiometabolic comorbidities and PA in PLWH.

Introduction: This study used phenomenological qualitative research design to understand the primary psychosocial stressors American Indian (AI) women face during pregnancy-factors that may be overlooked as contributing to the community's heightened preterm birth rate-and to identify mechanisms of resilience.

Method: Using Lakota talking circles (TCs) as the data collection method, researchers collected young mothers' and tribal elders' narratives about pregnancy and parenting. Themes were derived and verified from the transcripts.

A meta-analysis of associations between weight bias internalization and conceptually-related correlates: A step towards improving construct validity.

Weight bias internalization (WBI), a process of weight-based self-devaluation, has been associated with adverse mental and physical health. However, there are limitations with the existing conceptualization and operationalization of WBI that raise questions about the implications of this evidence-base. To address these limitations, the present study investigated the construct validity of WBI by conducting a meta-analysis of associations between WBI (as currently operationalized) and conceptually-related correlates.

Introduction: Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutation or loss of UBE3A and marked by intellectual disability, ataxia, autism-like symptoms, and other atypical behaviors. One route to treatment may lie in the role that environment plays early in postnatal life. Environmental enrichment (EE) is one manipulation that has shown therapeutic potential in preclinical models of many brain disorders, including neurodevelopmental disorders.

Probing Gluon Spin-Momentum Correlations in Transversely Polarized Protons through Midrapidity Isolated Direct Photons in p^{↑}+p Collisions at sqrt[s]=200 GeV.

Studying spin-momentum correlations in hadronic collisions offers a glimpse into a three-dimensional picture of proton structure. The transverse single-spin asymmetry for midrapidity isolated direct photons in p^{↑}+p collisions at sqrt[s]=200  GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Because direct photons in particular are produced from the hard scattering and do not interact via the strong force, this measurement is a clean probe of initial-state spin-momentum correlations inside the proton and is in particular sensitive to gluon interference effects within the proton.

Office-workers maintain decreased workplace sitting time long-term following participation in a sit-stand desk intervention study.

Previous studies report decreased workplace sitting time when standing desk interventions are provided to office workers. It is unclear whether decreased sedentary behaviours are maintained long-term. This was a follow-up to a previous intervention study to investigate whether observed sitting time decreases of 30-50% were sustained 12-24 months later.

Exercise prevents whole body type 2 diabetes risk factors better than estradiol replacement in rats.

The absence of estrogens in postmenopausal women is linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and estradiol replacement can decrease this risk. Notably, exercise can also treat and prevent T2D. This study seeks to understand the molecular mechanisms by which estradiol and exercise induce their beneficial effects via assessing whole body and cellular changes.

Introduction: Ischemic preconditioning (IPC) has been shown to induce positive effects on skeletal muscle resulting in enhanced physical performance. Data display that IPC positively impacts both aerobic and anaerobic performance. However, there is inconclusive data exemplifying IPC's effects on power and sprint performance.

Genesurance counseling: Current training practices of genetic counseling graduate programs in the United States.

In recent years, it has become apparent that patients expect genetic counselors to be able to address questions about insurance coverage for genetic testing and perform 'genesurance' tasks in and out of genetic counseling sessions. Anecdotally, many genetic counseling graduate programs have begun to incorporate genesurance training in some capacity. However, the amount, modality, and potential barriers to this training had not been previously studied; therefore, this study aimed to elucidate current graduate program practice regarding genesurance.

Ecological factors influence balancing selection on leaf chemical profiles of a wildflower.

Balancing selection is frequently invoked as a mechanism that maintains variation within and across populations. However, there are few examples of balancing selection operating on loci underpinning complex traits, which frequently display high levels of variation. We investigated mechanisms that may maintain variation in a focal polymorphism-leaf chemical profiles of a perennial wildflower (Boechera stricta, Brassicaceae)-explicitly interrogating multiple ecological and genetic processes including spatial variation in selection, antagonistic pleiotropy and frequency-dependent selection.

Janus kinase inhibitors ruxolitinib and baricitinib impair glycoprotein-VI mediated platelet function.

Several Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors (jakinibs) have recently been approved to treat inflammatory, autoimmune and hematological conditions. Despite emerging roles for JAKs and downstream signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) proteins in platelets, it remains unknown whether jakinibs affect platelet function. Here, we profile platelet biochemical and physiological responses in the presence of five different clinically relevant jakinibs, including ruxolitinib, upadacitinib, oclacitinib, baricitinib and tofacitinib.

Diamond-Blackfan Anemia: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

We report a case of a male neonate delivered urgently via cesarean at thirty-five 5/7 weeks gestation for non-reassuring fetal monitoring who was found to have severe anemia at birth that could not be explained by acute blood loss. He was born to a 24-year-old mother, whose pregnancy was complicated by abnormal ultrasound findings, including a radial ray defect and fetal growth restriction. Trio rapid whole-exome sequencing (rWES) confirmed Diamond-Blackfan anemia in both the neonate and mother.

Conscience clauses in genetic counseling: Awareness and attitudes.

Conscience clauses are laws that allow healthcare providers to refuse to participate in legal medical services based on moral or ethical objections. Genetic counselors encounter a variety of ethical and moral issues, including counseling about abortions. Currently, three states (Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Virginia) have genetic counseling conscience clause laws that allow genetic counselors to refuse to counsel about abortions.

Not all low fetal fraction cell-free DNA screening failures are at increased risk for aneuploidy.

Objective: To evaluate cell-free DNA (cfDNA) redraws and pregnancy outcomes following low fetal fraction (FF) cfDNA failures, as it has been suggested that a failed cfDNA screen due to insufficient FF carries increased risk for fetal aneuploidy.

Methods: Here >200,000 consecutive samples were reviewed and >1,100 patients were identified with a failed cfDNA due to low FF using genome-wide massively parallel sequencing. Redraw results following the initial low FF failure were analyzed, as well as pregnancy outcomes for patients with repeated low FF failure on redraw.

A narrative literature review: Growing the workforce through increased fieldwork capacity in genetic counseling training programs.

In response to mounting concerns regarding a perceived shortage of genetic counselors, the Genetic Counselor Workforce Working Group (WFWG) was established in 2013 to identify barriers to growth of the genetic counseling workforce. After completing a workforce analysis and confirming a shortage, the WFWG convened a strategic planning session in 2017 to identify goals and strategies that would increase the number of certified counselors to meet the current and future workforce demands and ensure access to genetic counselor services. Subcommittees were formed and charged with achieving assigned goals; one such subcommittee included a curriculum working group to build a dynamic and effective educational infrastructure to increase the number of genetic counselors graduated from accredited training program.

Cancer-related Fatigue Reported in Online Discussion Groups.

Fatigue is a prevalent cancer-related symptom that is difficult to communicate, define, and treat. To obtain robust descriptions of symptoms, participants were recruited into two online groups that consisted of their dialoguing together in an asynchronous, threaded discussion forum. Participants dialogued for 5 months and completed pre- and post-participation demographic data and symptom ratings.
