Feedback is an essential part of continuous quality improvement of cases used in medical curricula. This report describes results of qualitative analysis of feedback to elucidate what worked well and what needed improvement from the lens of our pre-clerkship medical students. Complexity, realism, and use of media were themes identified as strengths.

Objective: This preliminary study tested whether non-invasive, remote Elastic Scattering Spectroscopy (ESS) measurements obtained in the oral cavity can be used as a proxy to accurately differentiate between patients with laryngeal cancer versus laryngeal leukoplakia.
Methods: 20 patients with laryngeal lesions [cancer (n = 10),leukoplakia (n = 10)] were clinically assessed and categorized by otolaryngologists per standard clinical practice. Patient demographics of age, race, sex, and smoking history were collected.

Purpose: Electrodiagnostic (EDX) testing is commonly used in conjunction with symptoms and physical examination findings to diagnose cubital tunnel syndrome (CuTS). The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between preoperative EDX diagnosis and the degree of Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand (DASH) improvement after surgery within the CuTS patient population.
Methods: A retrospective review was designed to analyze patients from a single institution who underwent a cubital tunnel release.

Objectives: Pain management in the potentially austere search and rescue (SAR) and emergency medical services (EMS) environments can be challenging. Intravenous (IV) and intramuscular (IM) routes of administration may be less practical. This study assesses the efficacy and safety of the sublingual sufentanil tablet (SST) in prehospital settings and hypothesizes that its use will reduce pain while maintaining a reasonable safety profile.

Introduction: Hair cells (HCs) are the sensory receptors of the auditory and vestibular systems in the inner ears of vertebrates that selectively transduce mechanical stimuli into electrical activity. Although all HCs have the hallmark stereocilia bundle for mechanotransduction, HCs in non-mammals and mammals differ in their molecular specialization in the apical, basolateral, and synaptic membranes. HCs of non-mammals, such as zebrafish (zHCs), are electrically tuned to specific frequencies and possess an active process in the stereocilia bundle to amplify sound signals.

Background: The study aimed to gain insight into the experiences of patients with cancer and survivors regarding the integration of social needs assessment into their care, while also gathering perspectives from patient navigators on the barriers to obtaining and utilizing social needs information during cancer care, which taken together may influence cancer care policies. By comparing the perspectives of patients and navigators, the study sought to inform best practices for integrating, identifying, and addressing social needs to improve patient experiences and outcomes.
Methods: We conducted qualitative interviews and self-report surveys involving patients with cancer, providers, and patient navigators or care coordinators, seeking their insights and firsthand experiences related to health-related social needs in cancer care.

Estrogens regulate numerous physiological and pathological processes, including wide-ranging effects in wound healing. The effects of estrogens are mediated through multiple estrogen receptors (ERs), including the classical nuclear ERs (ERα and ER ), that typically regulate gene expression, and the 7-transmembrane G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER), that predominantly mediates rapid "non-genomic" signaling. Estrogen modulates the expression of various genes involved in epidermal function and regeneration, inflammation, matrix production, and protease inhibition, all critical to wound healing.

Background: Popliteal artery injuries (PAIs) may have amputation rates as high as 20%. This study focuses on identifying risk factors associated with major amputations following PAIs in a large single-center cohort. Additionally, we assess the impact of repairing or ligating concomitant popliteal vein injuries.

Ferrochelatase (FECH) is the terminal enzyme in human heme biosynthesis, catalyzing the insertion of ferrous iron into protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) to form protoheme IX (Heme). Phosphorylation increases the activity of FECH, and it has been confirmed that the activity of FECH phosphorylated at T116 increases. However, it remains unclear whether the T116 site and other potential phosphorylation modification sites collaboratively regulate the activity of FECH.

Effective nutrition training is fundamental to medical education. Current training is inadequate and can cause harm to students and patients alike; it leaves physicians unprepared to counsel on nutrition, places undue focus on weight and body mass index (BMI), can exacerbate anti-obesity bias, and increase risk for development of eating disorders, while neglecting social determinants of health and communication skills. Physicians and educators hold positions of influence in society; what we say and how we say it matters.

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in neurology is a growing field offering opportunities to improve accuracy of diagnosis and treatment of complicated neuronal disorders, plus fostering a deeper understanding of the aetiologies of these diseases through AI-based analyses of large omics data. The most common neurodegenerative disease, Alzheimer's disease (AD), is characterized by brain accumulation of specific pathological proteins, accompanied by cognitive impairment. In this review, we summarize the latest progress on the use of AI in different AD-related fields, such as analysis of neuroimaging data enabling early and accurate AD diagnosis; prediction of AD progression, identification of patients at higher risk and evaluation of new treatments; improvement of the evaluation of drug response using AI algorithms to analyze patient clinical and neuroimaging data; the development of personalized AD therapies; and the use of AI-based techniques to improve the quality of daily life of AD patients and their caregivers.

This review paper analyzes the ethical implications of billing patients for electronic communication with physicians through electronic health records, a practice already adopted by medical institutions such as the Cleveland Clinic. The analysis assesses how billing aligns with pillars of medical ethics which include beneficence, respect for persons, and justice. Although billing may enhance communication, improve patient care, and alleviate physician burnout, concerns arise over potential consequences on patient autonomy, trust, and health care disparities.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is recognized as an autoimmune joint disease driven by T cell responses to self (or modified self or microbial mimic) antigens that trigger and aggravate the inflammatory condition. Newer treatments of RA employ monoclonal antibodies or recombinant receptors against cytokines or immune cell receptors as well as small-molecule Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors to systemically ablate the cytokine or cellular responses that fuel inflammation. Unlike these treatments, a therapeutic vaccine, such as CEL-4000, helps balance adaptive immune homeostasis by promoting antigen-specific regulatory rather than inflammatory responses, and hence modulates the immunopathological course of RA.

Meniscal tears are a common musculoskeletal pathology in the United States, affecting 61 in every 100,000 people. Surgical repair is indicated for certain tear patterns to reduce the risk of joint degeneration, normalize contact forces in the knee, and help restore normal knee kinematics. However, radial meniscus tear repairs fail to completely heal 38% of the time due to tear characteristics, biology, surgical technique, and inadequate rehabilitation.

In vitro atherosclerosis models are essential to evaluate therapeutics before in vivo and clinical studies, but significant limitations remain, such as the lack of three-layer vascular architecture and limited atherosclerotic features. Moreover, no scalable 3D atherosclerosis model is available for making high-throughput assays for therapeutic evaluation. Herein, we report an in vitro 3D three-layer nanomatrix vascular sheet with critical atherosclerosis multi-features (VSA), including endothelial dysfunction, monocyte recruitment, macrophages, extracellular matrix remodeling, smooth muscle cell phenotype transition, inflammatory cytokine secretion, foam cells, and calcification initiation.

Background: Previously published neonatal antibiotic stewardship efforts have been primarily implemented in single centers. Piedmont Athens Regional began work to decrease antibiotic use in the NICU with spread to the newborn nursery (NBN) and, subsequently, 13 other NICUs and NBNs throughout a health care system over a 4-year period.
Methods: This quality improvement initiative was conducted in the context of a multicenter learning collaborative from 2016 to 2019.
