Purpose: In recent years artificial intelligence (AI), as a new segment of computer science, has also become increasingly more important in medicine. The aim of this project was to investigate whether the current version of ChatGPT (ChatGPT 4.0) is able to answer open questions that could be asked in the context of a German board examination in ophthalmology.

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapies have become the standard of care in the treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME), resulting in a remarkable decrease in disease-related vision loss. However, the need for regular injections places a significant burden on patients, caregivers, and the healthcare system and improvements in vision may not be maintained long term. As a result of its drying potency and duration of action, brolucizumab, an intravitreal anti-VEGF therapy approved for the treatment of nAMD and DME, could decrease injection frequency for patients and provide an efficacious treatment; however, balancing its benefits and risks can be challenging.

Injections of botulinum toxin can be viewed by now as the therapy of choice in treating hemifacial spasm (HFS). Each of the three botulinum toxin-A preparations have been approved for this indication in Germany. HFS is a frequent disease characterized by involuntary contractions of the muscles of one half of the face innervated by the facial nerve.

Purpose: To estimate and compare cross-sectional scotopic versus mesopic macular sensitivity losses measured by microperimetry, and to report and compare the longitudinal rates of scotopic and mesopic macular sensitivity losses in ABCA4 gene-associated Stargardt disease (STGD1).
Design: This was a multicenter prospective cohort study.
Methods: Participants comprised 127 molecularly confirmed STGD1 patients enrolled from 6 centers in the United States and Europe and followed up every 6 months for up to 2 years.

Background: To the best of our knowledge, there is no validated classification to assess intraoperative adverse events (iAEs) in ophthalmic surgery. ClassIntra is a newly developed classification for surgery- and anaesthesia-related iAEs that has been recently validated in various surgical disciplines, but not in ophthalmic surgery. We aim to assess the validity and practicability of ClassIntra in patients undergoing ophthalmic surgery.

Purpose: To analyse the amplitude of vessel pulsation in the retina and to determine whether constriction of the vessels by oxygen would decrease their pulsation amplitude and could thus be used to quantify the rigidity of the retinal vessels.
Patients And Methods: The study included 20 healthy young subjects. With the RVA (retinal vessel analyser), we aimed to quantify vessel pulsations under normal and hyperoxic conditions.

Background: Lack of adherence to treatment is a widespread problem in the anti-VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor) treatment of patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). In contrast to the extent of the lack of treatment adherence, there is so far insufficient evidence for elucidating the causes of nonadherence. The ANDROMEDA study was initiated to investigate the influencing factors on the adherence of nAMD patients to treatment.

Patients And Methods: Patients with an ultraviolet blocking lens (UV) (n = 5) or blue filter lens (BB) (n = 8) after intraocular lens (IOL) replacement for cataract and age-adjusted controls (AACs) (n = 16) underwent a balanced crossover within-subject design. After 1.5 h of dark adaptation, they were exposed to polychromatic light at 6500 K (blue-enriched) and 2500 K and 3000 K (non-blue-enriched) for 2 hours in the evening.

Background: Canaloplasty is a bleb-independent glaucoma surgery in which Schlemm's canal is dilated with a microcatheter and viscoelastic material, and stretched by a tensioning suture. The suture stent has numerous drawbacks such as the technical challenging implantation, deficient knowledge of proper suture tension, late loosening of the suture, or suture extrusion into the anterior chamber. The Stegmann Canal Expander (SCE) was developed to replace the suture stent and to make canaloplasty easier and more reproducible.

Background: Due to the excellent image quality and the small outer diameter of the GRIN-(gradient index) endoscope tips we were able to examine the subdural and the subarachnoidal space of the optic nerve meninges by endoscopy. This examination was performed to obtain more information about the inner structure of the optic nerve meninges.
Material And Methods: In this post-mortem study 7 optic nerves were examined from the chiasm to the globe by GRIN endoscopy (Volpi, Schlieren, Switzerland), with an outer diameter of 0.

Background: Gangliogliomas are rare tumors of the central nervous system. In only seven cases they have been found within the optic nerve. Two of these cases were associated with neurofibromatosis (NF), but a pathogenic link between gangliogliomas of the optic nerve and NF still remains controversial.

For that purpose 793 visual fields of 793 glaucoma patients or glaucoma suspects and 338 visual fields of 338 normal controls (normal central 26 degrees--area) were analysed. Perimetry was performed with an Octopus 201 with the help of program G1, which tests 14 peripheral test locations.
