Background: The new patient cataract and lens ophthalmic questionnaire (CLOQ) determines subjective patient satisfaction before and after cataract surgery according to item response theory (IRT).
Methods: A total of 317 patients with bilateral cataract surgery and implantation of different intraocular lens (IOL) types were included. The questionnaire (37 questions) is divided into questions on visual acuity-relevant quality of life (VRQoL), quality of vision (QoV), spectacle dependence, and general satisfaction.
Background: AURIGA is the largest prospective real-world study to evaluate intravitreal aflibercept (IVT-AFL) treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME) and macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion. This article presents 24-month data from the German cohort of treatment-naïve patients with DME.
Methods: Treatment-naïve patients (≥ 18 years) with DME were treated with IVT-AFL at the discretion of the physician in clinical practice.

Background: Intravitreal injections are one of the most commonly performed ophthalmic procedures. It is estimated that over 1 million intravitreal injections are performed in Germany annually. The aim of this study was to quantify the waste and carbon footprint associated with single-use injection sets, and to establish a waste reduction strategy.

The aim of global ophthalmology is to maximize vision, ocular health and functional ability, thereby contributing to overall health and well-being, social inclusion and quality of life of every individual worldwide. Currently, an estimated 1.1 billion people live with visual impairment, 90% of which can be prevented or cured through largely cost-effective interventions.

Glaucoma is one of the eye diseases that are particularly relevant to driving in old age. The ophthalmologist often has to take on the task of traffic medical consultation or medical appraisal. It is essential to distinguish between fitness to drive and driving ability or driving safety and driving capability.

Epidemiological studies on age-related macular degeneration (AMD) provide crucial data on the frequency of early and late forms as well as associated risk factors. The increasing number of population-based cross-sectional and longitudinal cohort studies in Germany and Europe with published data is making prevalence and incidence estimators for AMD more robust, although they show mostly method-related fluctuations. This review article brings together the latest published epidemiological measures for AMD from Germany and Central as well as Western Europe.

Differentiating between various intraocular lens (IOL) changes can be a challenge. In particular, certain IOL models carry the risk of late postoperative calcification. A major cause of IOL exchange surgery could be avoided if appropriate modifications were made during the IOL manufacturing process.

Early (< 3 months) intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation occurs due to insufficient fixation in the capsular bag, while late dislocation (≥ 3 months) is due to increasing insufficiency of the zonular apparatus. Iris-fixated IOL (IFIOL) and suture- or sutureless-fixated scleral IOL (SFIOL) are currently the most commonly used methods when IOL exchange is indicated. Different methods of scleral fixation with or without sutures have been described.

Opacification of intraocular lenses (IOLs) due to material changes is a serious complication that can compromise the good visual outcomes of uncomplicated cataract surgery. In hydrophobic acrylic IOLs, opacification can result from glistening formation, while in hydrophilic acrylic IOLs, there is a risk of calcification due to the formation of calcium phosphates within the polymer. Over time, various methods have been developed to investigate calcification in hydrophilic acrylic IOLs.

Despite all the progress in cataract and refractive lens surgery, refractive surprise is common in clinical practice. A significant postoperative refractive error is particularly annoying - and contributes to the patient's dissatisfaction with the procedure and the surgeon - when a multifocal IOL, an EDOF-IOL or a toric IOL has been implanted. The relatively new technology of intraoperative aberrometry offers the surgeon the option to intraoperatively measure the eye and its refraction, either directly after lens extraction and/or following IOL implantation.

Primary closure of large macular holes remains challenging, and variations of inverted inner limiting membrane (ILM) flap surgery have been described. In the present retrospective, interventional, single-centre case series, we propose a superior flap design with minimal posturing. Eight eyes of eight patients (four women and four men) in the period between July 2020 and March 2022 underwent 23 G three-port vitrectomy with a superior inverted ILM flap and 20% SF endotamponade for a full thickness macular hole (MH) by the same experienced surgeon (F.

Malignant tumors of the eye can be successfully treated with radiotherapy, which, however, can lead to radiogenic side effects in the surrounding healthy tissues. A distinction can be made between two forms of irradiation, external radiotherapy (teletherapy) and brachytherapy with a radiation source close to the tumor. The radiation dose is important for the occurrence of side effects.

Background: To investigate whether vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 is associated with the onset of retinal vascular occlusive disease (RVOD).
Methods: In this multicentre study, data from patients with central and branch retinal vein occlusion (CRVO and BRVO), central and branch retinal artery occlusion (CRAO and BRAO), and anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (AION) were retrospectively collected during a 2-month index period (1 June-31 July 2021) according to a defined protocol. The relation to any previous vaccination was documented for the consecutive case series.

Vitreoretinal surgeries require the administration of general anesthesia (GA) in selected groups of patients. The administration of intraoperative rescue narcotic analgesia (IRNA) during GA poses the risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). The surgical pleth index (SPI), a crucial component of the adequacy of anesthesia (AoA) guidance of GA, optimizes the intraoperative titration of IRNA.

Relative anterior microphthalmos, nanophthalmos and high-grade hyperopia are small eyes with different characteristic morphological relationships between the anterior segment and axis length. This article discusses the intraoperative challenges and surgical approaches to solutions for cataract operations in patients with one of the three named morphological alterations. Additionally, the article addresses possible comorbidities including glaucoma and preoperative planning.

Exact positioning and optimal axial alignment are mandatory to achieve satisfactory postoperative refractive results after implantation of a toric or presbyopia correcting intraocular lens (IOL). Posterior capsule rupture can preclude stable capsular fixation. In such cases, reverse optic capture with haptic tuck results in stable fixation of the lens with respect to centering, rotation and axial position.

Background: Pars plana vitrectomy (ppV) combined with silicone oil tamponade is a standard technique in the treatment of complicated retinal detachment. There are still recurrent cases of retinal detachment after silicone oil removal or redetachment with in situ oil tamponade.
Objective: The aim was to identify possible risk factors for retinal redetachment and to use the knowledge for optimizing treatment.
