[A new validated ophthalmic patient questionnaire for cataract and lens surgery : CLOQ: cataract and lens ophthalmic questionnaire].

Background: The new patient cataract and lens ophthalmic questionnaire (CLOQ) determines subjective patient satisfaction before and after cataract surgery according to item response theory (IRT).

Methods: A total of 317 patients with bilateral cataract surgery and implantation of different intraocular lens (IOL) types were included. The questionnaire (37 questions) is divided into questions on visual acuity-relevant quality of life (VRQoL), quality of vision (QoV), spectacle dependence, and general satisfaction.

[Aflibercept in the clinical routine: the AURIGA study : The 24-month results of the German cohort of treatment-naïve patients with diabetic macular edema receiving intravitreal aflibercept].

Background: AURIGA is the largest prospective real-world study to evaluate intravitreal aflibercept (IVT-AFL) treatment of diabetic macular edema (DME) and macular edema secondary to retinal vein occlusion. This article presents 24-month data from the German cohort of treatment-naïve patients with DME.

Methods: Treatment-naïve patients (≥ 18 years) with DME were treated with IVT-AFL at the discretion of the physician in clinical practice.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration in an Ageing Society - Current Epidemiological Research.

Epidemiological studies on age-related macular degeneration (AMD) provide crucial data on the frequency of early and late forms as well as associated risk factors. The increasing number of population-based cross-sectional and longitudinal cohort studies in Germany and Europe with published data is making prevalence and incidence estimators for AMD more robust, although they show mostly method-related fluctuations. This review article brings together the latest published epidemiological measures for AMD from Germany and Central as well as Western Europe.

Differential Diagnosis of Changes in Intraocular Lenses.

Differentiating between various intraocular lens (IOL) changes can be a challenge. In particular, certain IOL models carry the risk of late postoperative calcification. A major cause of IOL exchange surgery could be avoided if appropriate modifications were made during the IOL manufacturing process.

Aetiology and Management of IOL Dislocations.

Early (< 3 months) intraocular lens (IOL) dislocation occurs due to insufficient fixation in the capsular bag, while late dislocation (≥ 3 months) is due to increasing insufficiency of the zonular apparatus. Iris-fixated IOL (IFIOL) and suture- or sutureless-fixated scleral IOL (SFIOL) are currently the most commonly used methods when IOL exchange is indicated. Opacification of intraocular lenses (IOLs) due to material changes is a serious complication that can compromise the good visual outcomes of uncomplicated cataract surgery. In hydrophobic acrylic IOLs, opacification can result from glistening formation, while in hydrophilic acrylic IOLs, there is a risk of calcification due to the formation of calcium phosphates within the polymer. Over time, various methods have been developed to investigate calcification in hydrophilic acrylic IOLs.

Evaluating the Predictability of Postoperative Target Refraction Using the Prototype of a New Intraoperative Aberrometer.

Despite all the progress in cataract and refractive lens surgery, refractive surprise is common in clinical practice. A significant postoperative refractive error is particularly annoying - and contributes to the patient's dissatisfaction with the procedure and the surgeon - when a multifocal IOL, an EDOF-IOL or a toric IOL has been implanted. [Clinical aspects and care of radiogenic treatment side effects on the eye].

Malignant tumors of the eye can be successfully treated with radiotherapy, which, however, can lead to radiogenic side effects in the surrounding healthy tissues. A  distinction can be made between two forms of irradiation, external radiotherapy (teletherapy) and brachytherapy with a radiation source close to the tumor. The radiation dose is important for the occurrence of side effects.

Retinal Vascular Occlusion after COVID-19 Vaccination: More Coincidence than Causal Relationship? Data from a Retrospective Multicentre Study.

Background: To investigate whether vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 is associated with the onset of retinal vascular occlusive disease (RVOD).

Methods: In this multicentre study, data from patients with central and branch retinal vein occlusion (CRVO and BRVO), central and branch retinal artery occlusion (CRAO and BRAO), and anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (AION) were retrospectively collected during a 2-month index period (1 June-31 July 2021) according to a defined protocol. The relation to any previous vaccination was documented for the consecutive case series.

This article discusses the intraoperative challenges and surgical approaches to solutions for cataract operations in patients with one of the three named morphological alterations. Additionally, the article addresses possible comorbidities including glaucoma and preoperative planning.

[Fixation of an intraocular lens using reverse optic capture with haptic tuck for intraoperative posterior capsule rupture].

Exact positioning and optimal axial alignment are mandatory to achieve satisfactory postoperative refractive results after implantation of a toric or presbyopia correcting intraocular lens (IOL). Posterior capsule rupture can preclude stable capsular fixation. In such cases, reverse optic capture with haptic tuck results in stable fixation of the lens with respect to centering, rotation and axial position.

[Reasons and risk factors for recurrent retinal detachment after removal of silicon oil in various vitreoretinal diseases].

Background: Pars plana vitrectomy (ppV) combined with silicone oil tamponade is a standard technique in the treatment of complicated retinal detachment. There are still recurrent cases of retinal detachment after silicone oil removal or redetachment with in situ oil tamponade.
