Subcortical ischemic vascular dementia is a relatively common form of dementia. Anatomical changes of ageing in the brain arteries predispose the elderly to the effects of hypotension. Depending on their circulatory pattern, particular regions of the brain are susceptible to ischemic hypoperfusive lesions.

Vascular dementia is the second most common type of dementia. The subcortical ischaemic form (SIVD) frequently causes cognitive impairment and dementia in elderly people. SIVD results from small-vessel disease, which produces either arteriolar occlusion and lacunes or widespread incomplete infarction of white matter due to critical stenosis of medullary arterioles and hypoperfusion (Binswanger's disease).

Vascular dementia (VaD) is the second-most-common cause of dementia in the elderly, after Alzheimer's disease (AD). VaD is defined as loss of cognitive function resulting from ischemic, hypoperfusive, or hemorrhagic brain lesions due to cerebrovascular disease or cardiovascular pathology. Diagnosis requires the following criteria: cognitive loss, often predominantly subcortical; vascular brain lesions demonstrated by imaging; a temporal link between stroke and dementia; and exclusion of other causes of dementia.

Acute upper viral respiratory infection (VRI) is the number one cause of illness for which patients seek medical care in the United States. Rhinoviruses, members of the family Picornaviridae, are the causative pathogens in more than half of VRIs, and they are associated with acute exacerbations of respiratory disease, including asthma, sinusitis, otitis media, and COPD. Owing to the lack of commercial availability of rapid and cost-effective laboratory tests to confirm the presence of VRI, the diagnosis is most commonly made empirically, based on patient history and physical examination.

Senescence accelerated prone mouse strains (SAM-P) and resistant strains (SAM-R) have proven useful in elucidating aspects of the aging process. The senescence accelerated mouse SAM-P/8 strain exhibits severe age-related learning and memory impairments well before the median age of survival. Disruption of the brain cholinergic system produces learning and memory impairments as severe as those seen in aging SAM-P/8 mice.

VaD is the second most common cause of dementia in the elderly after AD. VaD is defined as the loss of cognitive function resulting from ischemic, ischemic-hypoxic, or hemorrhagic brain lesions as a result of CVD and cardiovascular pathologic changes. Diagnosis requires (1) cognitive loss (often predominantly subcortical), (2) vascular brain lesions demonstrated by imaging, and (3) exclusion of other causes of dementia, such as AD.

To test whether the contribution of endothelin-B (ET-B) receptors to resting vascular tone differs between genders, we administered the ET-B receptor antagonist BQ-788 into the forearm skin of 11 male and 11 female subjects by intradermal microdialysis. Skin blood flow was measured using laser-Doppler flowmetry at the microdialysis site. The probe was perfused with Ringer solution alone, followed by BQ-788 (150 nM) and finally sodium nitroprusside (28 mM) to effect maximal cutaneous vasodilation.

Until recently, arterial stenosis and occlusion due to buildup of atherosclerotic plaque were recognized as the primary causes of coronary heart disease (CHD). Currently, CHD is viewed as a lifelong process of endothelial inflammation, thrombosis, and plaque instability and rupture. Lifestyle modification is an important first step in prevention of CHD, but even those patients who are the most committed to following a healthy diet and lifestyle frequently require the addition of drug therapy to further reduce risk.

In cultured cells, growth factor-induced phosphorylation of two translation modulators, p70 S6 kinase and eukaryotic initiation factor 4E-binding protein 1 (4E-BP1), is blocked by nanomolar concentrations of the immunosuppressant rapamycin. Rapamycin also attenuates liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy, but it is not known if this growth-suppressive effect is due to dephosphorylation of p70 S6 kinase and/or 4E-BP1. We found that partial hepatectomy induced a transient increase in liver p70 S6 kinase activity and 4E-BP1 phosphorylation as compared with sham-operated rats.

Objectives: To summarize the effects of garlic on several cardiovascular-related factors and to note its adverse effects.
Methods: English and non-English citations were identified from 11 electronic databases, references, manufacturers, and experts from January 1966 through February 2000 (depending on the database searched). Reports of cardiovascular-related effects were limited to randomized controlled trials lasting at least 4 weeks.

Chronic infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a major public health threat in the United States and worldwide. By sharing some routes of transmission, persons infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are at risk for coinfection with HCV As a result, hepatic cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma due to chronic infection with HCV are important causes of both morbidity and mortality in coinfected patients. The advent of highly active antiretroviral therapy improved the management of patients with HIV, leading to decreased morbidity and better survival.

Few studies have examined the consequences of alcohol and drug abuse on TBI though they commonly co-occur. Both TBI and substance abuse independently result in neuropathological changes in the brain such as ventricular enlargement and cortical atrophy, thus it is reasonable to hypothesize that the combination of the two would result in more significant cerebral damage. In this study, 3 groups of patients--traumatically brain injured (TBI) with substance abuse (N = 19), TBI without substance abuse (N = 19), and substance abuse with no TBI (N = 16)--were compared with normal controls (N = 20) on several quantitative MRI (QMRI) measures.

This study was undertaken to characterize the laboratory and clinical course of patients with AIDS and cryptococcal meningitis who had normal or elevated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure. Data were obtained retrospectively from a randomized multicenter quasifactorial phase III study comparing amphotericin B with or without flucytosine in primary treatment of cryptococcal meningitis. CSF pressure was measured before treatment and at 2 weeks.

Problems with diagnostic criteria for vascular dementia (VaD) stem from the inadequacy of the current dementia concept, a paradigm based on amnestic and other cortical deficits typical of Alzheimer disease (AD). However, most cases of VaD are due to subcortical lesions such as Binswanger-type periventricular white matter ischemia, or strokes causing decreased frontal activation and diaschisis-mediated cerebral hypoperfusion. We propose a new definition of dementia based on executive dysfunction and a formal assessment of executive control functions (ECF) for the diagnosis of VaD.

The history of senile dementia begins in the Greco-Roman period with basic concepts of senility by Pythagoras and Hippocrates. During the Middle Ages, the main contribution was by Roger Bacon in 1290. The first textbook of neurology, De cerebri morbis, by Jaso de Pratis (1549), included a chapter on dementia ("De memoriae detrimento").

Interleukin-6-deficient (IL-6(-/-)) knockout mice had significantly increased Chlamydia trachomatis levels in lung tissue and increased mortality compared to B6129F2/J controls early after intranasal infection. Gamma interferon production and chlamydia-specific antibody levels were consistent with a decreased but reversible Th1-like response in IL-6(-/-) mice. IL-6 is needed for an optimal early host response to this infection.
