Background: The long-standing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) pandemic has proven difficult to resolve and is becoming more complex, especially in the context of increasing forced migration, with little evidence around patterns of AMR in migrant communities. This study aimed to determine the frequency in the carriage of common types of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria between Syrian refugees and the local communities in Türkiye: extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE).

Methods: We collected nasal swabs and stool samples from the study participants, the local community members, and refugees, between September 2020 and March 2021.

Objective: Patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) who undergo ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) placement often belong to an older demographic, putting them at increased risk of postoperative delirium and related complications. Recent literature documenting the use of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols in various disciplines of surgery has shown improved clinical outcomes, faster discharge, and lower readmission rates. Early return to a familiar environment (i.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has killed millions of people around the world so far and has turned into a disaster for people and healthcare systems. Neurological problems are often seen in people with COVID-19 in the general population, but it is unclear how common they are in pregnant women. This study provides a summary of studies on pregnant women with proven SARS-CoV-2 infection and a particular neurologic diagnosis from different parts of the world.

Central nervous system tuberculosis (CNS-TB) is rarely suspected in pregnancy because its clinical presentation may masquerade other common conditions in pregnancy, such as eclampsia. In high tuberculosis endemic areas, CNS-TB should be suspected with a high degree of suspicion among unimmunized and immunocompromised individuals. We hereby report a case of a 32-year-old pregnant woman conceived by in vitro fertilization due to tubal blockage causing infertility, probably due to chronic infection, who presented with a history of multiple seizure episodes without a history of similar complaints outside this pregnancy.

Article Synopsis
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder in premenopausal women, characterized by irregular menstruation, ovulation issues, and excess androgen levels, often linked with insulin resistance and various metabolic disorders.
  • Current treatments like metformin show limited effectiveness, highlighting the need for new therapies.
  • Novel antidiabetic drugs, such as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, may offer benefits for PCOS patients by improving weight loss, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular health, but more research is needed on their safety and efficacy in this context.

Background: Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and its derivatives are used in several aesthetic, dental, and musculoskeletal procedures. Their efficacy is primarily due to the release of various growth factors (GF), interleukins, cytokines, and white blood cells. However, the PRP preparation methods are highly variable, and studies lack consistency in reporting complete procedures to prepare PRP and characterize PRP and its derivatives.

Article Synopsis
  • Depression, particularly postpartum depression (PPD), impacts about one in seven women globally and can affect the mother-child bond and the newborn's development.
  • This study focuses on the effects of ketamine as a treatment for PPD in lactating rat mothers, evaluating its safety and effects on the cardiovascular system and behavior during maternal separation stress.
  • Results indicate that ketamine could be a safe option for treating postpartum depression without causing harm to the cardiovascular or urinary systems of lactating mothers.

Anticholinesterase pesticides are a main cause of the intentional or accidental poisoning of animals. Anticholinesterases include several substances that cause the overstimulation of both central and peripheral acetylcholine-dependent neurotransmission. Forensic analyses of poisoning cases require high levels of expertise, are costly, and often do not provide reliable quantitative information for unambiguous conclusions.

We describe the discovery of an agonist of the nuclear receptor NR2F1 that specifically activates dormancy programs in malignant cells. The agonist led to a self-regulated increase in NR2F1 mRNA and protein and downstream transcription of a novel dormancy program. This program led to growth arrest of an HNSCC PDX line, human cell lines, and patient-derived organoids in 3D cultures and in vivo.

Clinical outcomes following reverse total shoulder arthroplasty with tuberosity excision for treatment of proximal humerus fractures: a case series.

JSES Rev Rep Tech

February 2022

Stony Brook University School of Medicine, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Renaissance School of Medicine, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY, USA.

Background: Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) has become an increasingly popular treatment option for complex 3- and 4-part proximal humerus fractures in elderly patients. The literature has demonstrated that tuberosity repair likely improves postoperative range of motion (ROM). However, the difference between tuberosity repair and excision may not be appreciable to patients in their day-to-day lives.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a growing public health concern, the impact of which is frequently underestimated. It has a profound effect on the quality of life (QoL) which appears to be disproportionately lower in female patients compared to men. We aim to explore the factors contributing to sex-related disparities in the QoL of AF patients by conducting a systematic review using the PubMed electronic search database.
