Acute pain after serratus anterior plane or thoracic paravertebral blocks for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: A noninferiority randomised trial.

Eur J Anaesthesiol

August 2021

From the Department of Anesthesiology, Shanghai Chest Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China (YQ, JW, QH, YL, MX), the Department of Outcomes Research, Anesthesiology Institute, Cleveland Clinic (YQ, EJM, DY, II, DIS), the Outcomes Research Consortium (JW), the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences, Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA (EJM, DY), the Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation, Ataturk University School of Medicine, Anaesthesiology Clinical Research Office, Erzurum, Turkey (II).

Background: Serratus anterior plane blocks (SAPBs) and thoracic paravertebral blocks (TPVBs) can both be used for video-assisted thoracic surgery. However, it remains unknown whether the analgesic efficacy of a SAPB is comparable to that of a TPVB.

Objective: We tested the primary hypothesis that SAPBs provide noninferior analgesia compared with TPVBs for video-assisted thoracic surgery.

Effect of Titanium Dioxide and Silver Nanoparticles on Mitochondrial Dynamics in Mouse Testis Tissue.

Biol Trace Elem Res

April 2022

Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Science Faculty, Ataturk University, Erzurum, Turkey.

This study was performed to investigate whether the toxicity of nanoparticles (Ag NPs or TiO NPs) affected mitochondrial dynamics (mitochondrial fusion and fission mechanisms) in testicular cells of mice. Animals were assigned into three groups (ten mice per group): control group (distilled water), TiO NP group (5 mg/kg per dose), and Ag NP group (5 mg/kg per dose). NPs were administered intravenously (via tail vein) to mice with 3-day intervals.

Aim: Radial artery blood gas sampling is a very common procedure undertaken in the emergency department to evaluate respiratory and metabolic parameters. This intervention causes both anxiety and pain for the patient. Therefore, the current study aimed to examine the analgesic efficacy of lidocaine spray compared to a placebo during radial artery blood gas sampling.

Objective: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with impairment in social, academic and job-related functioning in both children and adults. The purpose of this study is to investigate the susceptibility to cardiovascular risk factors in children with ADHD diagnosis through common carotid artery intima-media thickness (cIMT) measurement, to compare cIMT in ADHD and control groups and to evaluate the association between cIMT and ADHD symptom severity.

Methods: The mean cIMT of 42 children with ADHD, ADHD symptom scales and a semi-structured psychiatric interview, and 42 age and sex matched healthy controls were measured with B-mode Doppler neck ultrasonography.

Braz J Anesthesiol

September 2024

Ataturk University School of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology and Reanimation, Erzurum, Turkey; Clinical Research, Development and Design Application and Research Center, Ataturk University School of Medicine, Erzurum, Turkey.

Background: The lateral sagittal brachial plexus block is the most used method for pediatric upper extremity surgery, whereas the applications of costoclavicular brachial plexus block are limited. This study aimed to compare the lateral sagittal and costoclavicular approaches for the ultrasound-guided infraclavicular block in pediatric patients.

Methods: Sixty pediatric patients aged 5.

Introduction Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a congenital heart disease that, if left untreated, can lead to pulmonary hypertension, congestive heart failure, and death. Here, we aimed to assess postoperative cardiac hemodynamic changes and surgical techniques, as well as early and late postoperative findings in surgically treated PDA patients. Materials and methods We retrospectively analyzed the data belonging to 126 patients whose PDA was surgically closed in our clinic from January 2001 to December 2012.

Purpose: Despite the therapeutic effects of radiotherapy on tumor cells, it has potential severe adverse effects on the surrounding normal tissues. Acute or chronic intestinal adverse effects that are likely to occur in patients undergoing radiotherapy for pelvic and abdominal cancers lead to increased morbidity, significant impairment of the quality of life, and economic losses. Various biological, chemical and pharmacological agents are being tested to protect from and to treat radiation enteritis.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is one of the most pressing health problems of this century, but our knowledge of the disease is still limited. In this study, we aimed to examine serum-soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) and kidney injury molecule 1 (KIM-1) levels based on the clinical course of COVID-19. Our study included 102 patients over the age of 18 who were diagnosed as having COVID-19 between September 2020 and December 2020 and a control group of 50 health workers over the age of 18 whose severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) PCR results were negative.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 has infected over 100 million people since it appeared in Wuhan, China, just one year ago. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between interleukin-6 (IL-6) gene polymorphisms -174G/C and -597G/A and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) course. The study included 70 patients aged 18-45 years who were diagnosed with COVID-19 in Turkey between March and November 2020 and hospitalized in our hospital.
