Article Synopsis
  • This study compared echocardiographic and clinical features in patients with migraines and embolic stroke of undetermined source (ESUS) who have a patent foramen ovale (PFO).
  • It involved 310 participants and found that ESUS patients were generally older, had more comorbid conditions like diabetes and hypertension, and displayed greater echocardiographic abnormalities compared to migraine patients.
  • Despite these differences, the calculated risk scores for PFO-related embolic events were similar in both groups, indicating potential distinctions in their clinical profiles that may influence treatment approaches.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effects of ticagrelor and clopidogrel on patients with anemia and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) to determine the best treatment approach.
  • Utilized a retrospective design, comparing patients with ST-elevation and non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction from 2014 to 2021, focusing on major cardiovascular events and safety concerns linked to the treatments.
  • Results showed no significant differences in major cardiovascular events or bleeding between the two medications, although those with very low hemoglobin (≤8 mg/dL) and older patients (≥75 years) on ticagrelor faced higher risks.

Background: Wearable devices, particularly smartwatches like the Apple Watch (AW), can record important cardiac information, such as single‑lead electrocardiograms (ECGs). Although they are increasingly used to detect conditions such as atrial fibrillation (AF), research on their effectiveness in detecting a wider range of dysrhythmias and abnormal ECG findings remains limited. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of the AW in detecting various cardiac rhythms by comparing it with standard ECG's lead-I.

Background and objective The effective use of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) has been on the rise in diagnosing and treating benign and malignant pathologies of the common bile duct and pancreas. ERCP, a complex procedure requiring high knowledge, skills, and practice, differs from other endoscopic applications as it involves the use of different techniques and equipment and the occurrence of more complications. The most commonly observed complications of ERCP are pancreatitis, bleeding, perforation, and infections.

Objectives: To identify the unmet needs of breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy METHODS: A pretest-posttest single-group experimental design, a variation of the experimental research approach, was employed in this investigation. The study's sample consisted of 28 breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy at the radiation oncology clinic of a training and research hospital between November 2021 and April 2022. The sample size was determined using G*Power 3.

Background: In patients with symptomatic mitral PVL, successful transcatheter reduction of the PVL to less than mild is associated with significant improvement in short- and midterm survival.

Objectives: In this study, we present our single-centre, same operators' experience on percutaneous paravalvular leak closure with techniques and outcomes.

Methods: In this retrospective observational designed study, we retrieved hospital records of patients with a surgical history of mechanical or biological prosthetic valve replacement and who subsequently underwent transcatheter mitral paravalvular leak closure (TMPLC).

Objective: Lung transplantation is the only life-saving treatment for lung diseases that do not respond to medical treatment. Heart-lung harvesting requires a careful procedure to protect an adequate donor left atrial cuff around the junction of the superior and inferior pulmonary veins. This study aims to describe inadequate left atrial cuff during harvest and techniques of reconstruction at the threshold of literature.

Objectives: Hemoglobinopathies are a global public health problem with high mortality and morbidity and very expensive treatment. Disease can be reduced and prevented with hemoglobinopathy screening tests. It is possible to identify carriers with the hemoglobinopathy screening program applied in many countries of the world and in Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • The Naples prognostic score (NPS) is an established scoring system that assesses inflammation and nutrition, but its impact on in-hospital mortality in STEMI patients was previously unexamined.
  • A study involving 3,828 STEMI patients showed that higher NPS scores were linked to increased rates of in-hospital mortality, even after adjusting for various health factors.
  • The findings suggest that NPS might be a useful predictor of in-hospital mortality in STEMI cases, warranting further research to solidify its clinical application.

The relation of polymer structure of stent used in patients with acute coronary syndrome revascularized by stent implantation with long-term cardiovascular events.

Catheter Cardiovasc Interv

December 2023

Department of Cardiology, Dr. Siyami Ersek Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Educatıon Research Hospıtal, İstanbul, Türkiye.

Introduction: Drug-eluting stents (DES) have revolutionized percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) by improving event-free survival compared to older stent designs. However, early-generation DES with polymer matrixes have raised concerns regarding late stent thrombosis due to delayed vascular healing. To address these issues, biologically bioabsorbable polymer drug-eluting stents (BP-DES) and polymer-free drug-eluting stents (PF-DES) have been developed.

Background: Lesions of the long head of the biceps (LHB) tendon are a prevalent injury that frequently coexists with rotator cuff injuries. This study aimed to assess the effect of supraspinatus (SST) repair with concurrent LHB tenotomy on superior migration of the humeral head. The acromiohumeral distance (AHD) was determined via ultrasound to evaluate the superior migration of the humeral head.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that patients undergoing ACL reconstruction with quadrupled semitendinosus suspensory femoral and tibial fixation have comparable results in muscle strength and knee function to those undergoing ACL reconstruction with four-strand semitendinosus-gracilis suspensory femoral fixation and a bioabsorbable tibial interference screw fixation.

Materials And Methods: Between 2017 and 2019, 64 patients who were operated on by the same surgeon were included. Patients underwent ACL reconstruction technique with quadrupled semitendinosus suspensory femoral and tibial button fixation in Group 1, and patients underwent ACL reconstruction with coupled four-strand semitendinosus-gracilis suspensory femoral fixation and a bioabsorbable tibial interference screw in Group 2.
