J Med Internet Res

January 2025

Learning and Capacity Development Unit, Health Emergencies Programme, World Health Organization, Geneva, Switzerland.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated the global need for accessible content to rapidly train health care workers during health emergencies. The massive open access online course (MOOC) format is a broadly embraced strategy for widespread dissemination of trainings. Yet, barriers associated with technology access, language, and cultural context limit the use of MOOCs, particularly in lower-resource communities.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is heterogeneous and involves structural changes in the whole joint, such as cartilage, meniscus/labrum, ligaments, and tendons, mainly with short T2 relaxation times. Detecting OA before the onset of irreversible changes is crucial for early proactive management and limit growing disease burden. The more recent advanced quantitative imaging techniques and deep learning (DL) algorithms in musculoskeletal imaging have shown great potential for visualizing "pre-OA.

School of Information and Artificial Intelligence, Anhui Provincial Engineering Research Center for Beidou Precision Agriculture Information, Key Laboratory of Agricultural Sensors for Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Anhui Agricultural University, Hefei, Anhui 230036, China.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are small peptides that play an important role in disease defense. As the problem of pathogen resistance caused by the misuse of antibiotics intensifies, the identification of AMPs as alternatives to antibiotics has become a hot topic. Accurately identifying AMPs using computational methods has been a key issue in the field of bioinformatics in recent years.

Introduction: Varenicline is an α4β2 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor partial agonist with the highest therapeutic efficacy of any pharmacological smoking cessation aid and a 12-month cessation rate of 26%. Genetic variation may be associated with varenicline response, but to date no genome-wide association studies of varenicline response have been published.

Methods: In this study, we investigated the genetic contribution to varenicline effectiveness using two electronic health record-derived phenotypes.

The lateral flow assay is a strip-based analytical method for the portable and convenient detection of analytes of interest. It has the advantages of visual observation, autonomous sample flow, fast coloration time, minimal tedious operation procedures, and reliance on specialized instruments. However, the rough surface of the nitrocellulose membrane renders it difficult for the immobilized nucleic acids to remain in an ordered arrangement, and the immobilized nucleic acids are also liable to be digested in a complex matrix, inducing limited sensitivity and anti-interference.

Background: Several epidemiological studies and intervention trials have demonstrated that grapes and blueberries, which are rich in flavanols, can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, the mechanisms of action of these compounds remain unclear due to their low bioavailability.

Objective: This study aimed to characterize the sensory properties, blood flow velocity, and oxidative stress of a polyphenol rich grape and blueberry extract (PEGB) containing approximately 16% flavanols (11% monomers and 4% dimers).

Type II nuclear receptors (T2NRs) require heterodimerization with a common partner, the retinoid X receptor (RXR), to bind cognate DNA recognition sites in chromatin. Based on previous biochemical and overexpression studies, binding of T2NRs to chromatin is proposed to be regulated by competition for a limiting pool of the core RXR subunit. However, this mechanism has not yet been tested for endogenous proteins in live cells.

The Association Between Dietary Supplement Use and COVID-19 Symptoms.

J Diet Suppl

January 2025

Department of Epidemiology, Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, Arkansas, USA.

The scientific evidence supporting recommendations for dietary supplement use to prevent or treat coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‑19) is not well‑established. This cohort study investigates the relationship between dietary supplement usage and COVID‑19 symptoms among 27,181 adults tested for COVID‑19. Using data from surveys following COVID‑19 testing, conducted by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, associations between dietary supplement usage, symptomatology, and COVID‑19 status were explored.

University of KwaZulu-Natal, Howard College, College of Health Sciences, School of Laboratory Medicine and Medical Sciences, Department of Medical Biochemistry, Durban, South Africa.

Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene is involved in homocysteine and folic acid metabolism. Tumour suppressor protein TP53 gene maintains cellular and genetic integrity. To date, no studies associated the MTHFR C677T rs1801133 and TP53 Pro72Arg rs1042522 with CRP levels and methotrexate (a folic acid antagonist) treatment outcomes in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) patients.

Development and Validation of a Brief Age-Normed Screening Tool for Subthreshold Psychosis Symptoms in Youth.

Schizophr Bull

January 2025

Department of Psychiatry, Neurodevelopment and Psychosis Section, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, United States.

Background And Hypothesis: Improvements in screening tools for early subthreshold psychosis symptoms are needed to facilitate early identification and intervention efforts, especially given the challenges of rapidly differentiating age-appropriate experiences from potential early signs of emerging psychosis. Tools can be lengthy and time-consuming, impacting their utility and accessibility across clinical settings, and age-normed data are limited. To address this gap, we sought to develop and validate a brief, empirically derived, age-normed, subthreshold psychosis screening tool, for public use.

Air pollution and breast cancer risk: a Mendelian randomization study.

Int J Environ Health Res

January 2025

Department of Oncology, Guang'anmen Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, Beijing, China.

Previous research yields inconsistent findings on the association between air pollution and breast cancer risk, with no definitive causal relationship established. To address this, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization study on data from the IEU open GWAS databases and the Breast Cancer Association Consortium to explore the potential link between air pollution (including PM, PM absorbance, PM, PM, NO, and NO) and breast cancer risk. We found that PM (odds ratio (OR) = 1.

January 2025

Department of Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, School of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

Ablepharon macrostomia syndrome is a rare congenital disorder caused by autosomal-dominant mutations. This condition is characterized by redundant skin, low-set ears, macrostomia, ambiguous genitalia, and underdevelopment of the both upper and lower eyelids. The shortening of the anterior lamella, septum and levator aponeurosis lead to a severe corneal exposure within the first hours of life.

Successful treatment of epidermal growth factor receptor exon 19 deletion non-small cell lung cancer with almonertinib after osimertinib-induced interstitial lung disease: A case report.

J Cancer Res Ther

December 2024

Department of Oncology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University and Shandong Provincial Qianfoshan Hospital, Shandong Lung Cancer Institute, Shandong, China.

Osimertinib, a third-generation epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), has revolutionized one of the standard most efficient treatments for EGFR mutation-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Osimertinib, a third-generation EGFR-TKI, is currently one of most efficient treatments in clinical practice. However, it has a potentially fatal side effect: interstitial lung disease (ILD).
