Background: Polysomnography (PSG) is resource-intensive but remains the gold standard for diagnosing Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). We aimed to develop a screening tool to better allocate resources by identifying individuals at higher risk for OSA, overcoming limitations of current tools that may under-diagnose based on self-reported symptoms.

Methods: A total of 884 patients (490 diagnosed with OSA) were included, which was divided into the training, validation, and test sets.

The solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare intrathoracic neoplasm that commonly originates from the subpleural mesenchymal cells of the visceral pleura and accounts for less than 5% of all pleural tumors. We reported a case of a 54-year-old man with a two-week history of hypoglycemia, a six-month history of productive cough and fatigue, and chronic right chest pain. Radiological techniques revealed a giant intra-thoracic mass with hypervascularization, and pathological staining was carried out to make a definitive diagnosis of SFTP.

Article Synopsis
  • Lung cancer is a significant issue for patients with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), but there is limited research on those with non-IPF Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF); this study compares the two groups in terms of characteristics and survival.
  • The study analyzed data from 251 patients diagnosed with lung cancer between 2010 and 2022, finding that most were elderly men with a high smoking rate, and differing patterns of lung imaging between the two groups.
  • Both IPF-LC and non-IPF PF-LC patients had high 5-year mortality rates around 64%, with the shortest survival noted in non-IPF PF patients with unclassified PF.

Current guidelines recommend adding long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMAs) in patients with uncontrolled asthma, despite the use of moderate to high doses of inhaled steroid-long-acting beta agonists (ICS/LABA). This study aims to analyze the factors related to the prescription of add-on LAMA in clinical practice for asthma patients, shedding light on physicians' preferences. This study included adult asthma patients on add-on LAMA and ICS/LABA monitored for at least one year in a national registry comprising 2053 asthmatics.

Article Synopsis
  • FGFR is a vital receptor involved in growth and tissue repair, but its gene mutations can lead to cancer by disrupting essential processes.
  • Small molecule drugs and antibodies targeting FGFR mutations, like erdafitinib and pemigatinib, have shown clinical efficacy in treating certain cancer types.
  • Effective screening methods for FGFR variants are essential for utilizing FGFR inhibitors in treatment, and a consensus has been developed to standardize diagnosis and treatment processes.

Spatial resolution enhancement using deep learning improves chest disease diagnosis based on thick slice CT.

NPJ Digit Med

November 2024

Department of Radiological Sciences, Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Bioengineering, University of California Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

CT is crucial for diagnosing chest diseases, with image quality affected by spatial resolution. Thick-slice CT remains prevalent in practice due to cost considerations, yet its coarse spatial resolution may hinder accurate diagnoses. Our multicenter study develops a deep learning synthetic model with Convolutional-Transformer hybrid encoder-decoder architecture for generating thin-slice CT from thick-slice CT on a single center (1576 participants) and access the synthetic CT on three cross-regional centers (1228 participants).
