Despite poor treatment results, a family-oriented approach and the securing of residency have been deemed essential to recovery from resignation syndrome (RS). In a retrospective cohort study, we evaluated an alternative method involving environmental therapy, with patients separated from their parents, while actively abstaining from involving the asylum process in treatment. This study aimed to review available published reports concerning sudden unexpected postnatal collapse (SUPC) of apparently healthy infants within the first days of postnatal life, establish a structured presentation and delineate recommendations for preventive measures. All published reports of SUPC cases were retrospectively analyzed, and three not previously published SUPC cases at Karolinska University Hospital were detailed to exemplify the varying presentations and outcomes of SUPC. We found 398 published cases of SUPC occurring during first postnatal week.

Infection in infancy may dramatically aggravate an underlying cardiorespiratory dysfunction during a susceptible postnatal period. Children with immature brainstem respiratory control, as well as infants, may have periodic irregular breathing with potential detrimental apneas that are increased during sleep as well as during infectious episodes. Data now indicate that the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-1β impairs respiration during infection via prostaglandin E2 (PGE(2)) and that infection, with associated eicosanoid release, is one of the main causes of respiratory disorders in preterm infants.

Early postnatal changes in respiratory activity in rat in vitro and modulatory effects of substance P.

Developmental changes in the respiratory activity and its modulation by substance P (SP) were studied in the neonatal rat brainstem-spinal cord preparation from the day of birth to day 3 (P0-P3). The respiratory network activity in the ventrolateral medulla was represented by two types of bursts: basic regular bursts with typical decrementing shape and biphasic bursts appearing after augmented biphasic discharges in inspiratory neurons. With advancing postnatal age the respiratory output was considerably modified; the basic rhythm became faster by 20%, whereas the biphasic burst rate, which was originally 15 times slower, declined further by 180% and the C4 burst duration significantly decreased by 20% due to reduced decay time without preceding changes in the central inspiratory drive.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a modified version of constraint-induced (CI) movement therapy on bimanual hand-use in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP; age range 18 mo to 4 y) and to make a comparison with conventional paediatric treatment. Twenty-one children (13 females, eight males) completed the CI therapy programme and 20 children (12 males, eight females) served as a control group. The pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) has been proposed to act as an important mediator between infection and apnea in neonates. In this study, respiration and the ability to survive anoxic challenge were investigated between 70 and 95 min after intraperitoneal injection of IL-1beta (10 microg/kg) or NaCl in 9-day-old DBA/1lacJ mice. Using flow plethysmography, we show that mice given IL-1beta exhibited a decreased tidal volume (V(T)) and minute ventilation (V(E)) during normoxia compared to control animals.
