Background: The aim of the study was to compare results off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) combined mitral valve reconstruction (MVR) with standard on-pump approach.

Methods: From January 2014 to December 2017, a total of 53 patients received a combined myocardial revascularization and MVR for multivessel coronary artery disease (CAD) complicated by severe ischemic mitral regurgitation (IMR). All the subjects were divided into two groups: group I: 27 patients, received OPCAB + MVR, and group II (control group): 26 patients with on-pump myocardial revascularization (ONCAB) + MVR.

Background: Aortic root and ascending aortic aneurysms are traditionally surgically treated through the deployment of a conduit with an artificial aortic valve, which significantly increases the risk of postoperative complications in the form of thrombosis.

Materials & Methods: We report a case of Wolfe procedure in a 78-year-old female patient with aortic root aneurysm at high risk for conventional Bentall surgery.

Discussion And Conclusion: We use this case to discuss the effectiveness and short-term results of this procedure.

Respiratory viruses are opportunistic pathogens that infect the upper respiratory tract in humans and cause severe illnesses, especially in vulnerable populations. Some viruses have neuroinvasive properties and activate the immune response in the brain. These immune events may be neuroprotective or they may cause long-term damage similar to what is seen in some neurodegenerative diseases.

Background And Aim Of The Study: Minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) for mitral valve repair (MVRp) has been increasingly used. This study aimed to evaluate the early and late results of MICS for MVRp vs conventional sternotomy.

Materials And Methods: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials or observational studies (with matched populations) comparing MICS and conventional MVRp reporting any of the following outcomes: mortality, MVRp failure, complications, blood transfusion, readmission within 30 days after discharge, long-term reoperation for mitral regurgitation, operative times, mechanical ventilation time, intensive care unit (ICU) stay, or hospital stay.

Background: It was previously thought that inflammation and an immune response were the only factors capable of causing IL-1β, IL-6 and other cytokine`s production. In recent years data have appeared that stressful effects can also occupy an important place, enhancing production of IL- 1β, IL-6 and other cytokines; the result will be a change in the functional activity of a particular cell element, for example immunocompetent cells with subsequent development of inflammation, or a change in the functional activity of neurons. This experiment is aimed at studying the effect of the Selank glyprolin neuropeptide drug on the level of cytokines in animals under conditions of "social" stress, the results of which indicate the presence of stress-protective activity.

[Assessment of drug therapy in psychiatric elderly patients based on the AGS Beers criteria.].

Adv Gerontol

September 2020

Astrakhan State Medical University, 121 Bakinskaya str., Astrakhan 414000, Russian Federation, e-mail:

The study objective was to analyze the frequency of prescription of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) to elderly patients treated in a psychiatric in-patient setting. This study was carried out using AGS Beers criteria, an anti-polypharmacy tool developed under the auspices of the American Geriatric Association. The study indicates a high frequency of use of PIMs from the following pharmacological groups: benzodiazepine derivatives, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (long-term use), as well as drugs with significant anticholinergic potential.

Surfaces of implanted medical devices are highly susceptible to biofilm formation. Bacteria in biofilms are embedded in a self-produced extracellular matrix that inhibits the penetration of antibiotics and significantly contributes to the mechanical stability of the colonizing community which leads to an increase in morbidity and mortality rate in clinical settings. Therefore, new antibiofilm approaches and substances are urgently needed.

To illuminate modern ideas about Gilbert's syndrome (GS). GS is a common familial hyperbilirubinemia that can reduce the risk of various age-related diseases due to the antioxidant properties of bilirubin. In this case, slightly elevated unconjugated bilirubin in GS is strongly associated with a "reduced" prevalence of chronic diseases, in particular cardiovascular disease (CVD), as well as CVD-related and all-cause mortality.

In aortic valve disease cases, prosthetic valves have been used for valve replacement, however, these prostheses have inherent problems, and their quality in some countries is lower comparing to new-generation models, causing shorter durability. Aortic valve neocuspidization (AVNeo) has emerged as an option, which can be applied to a wide spectrum of these diseases. Despite the promising results, this procedure is not widely spread among cardiac surgeons yet.

Aortic Valve Neocuspidization with Glutaraldehyde-Treated Autologous Pericardium (Ozaki Procedure) - A Promising Surgical Technique.

Braz J Cardiovasc Surg

December 2019

Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, Pronto-Socorro Cardiológico de Pernambuco - Prof. Luiz Tavares, PROCAPE, Recife, Brazil.

In cases of aortic valve disease, prosthetic valves have been increasingly used for valve replacement, however, there are inherent problems with prostheses, and their quality in the so-called Third World countries is lower in comparison to new-generation models, which leads to shorter durability. Recently, transcatheter aortic valve replacement has been explored as a less invasive option for patients with high-risk surgical profile. In this scenario, aortic valve neocuspidization (AVNeo) has emerged as another option, which can be applied to a wide spectrum of aortic valve diseases.

We developed a technological accessory bacteriophage-based preparation and a method for phage-mediated bioprocessing for elimination of pathogenic microorganisms from the surface of fresh fish and for prolongation of the shelf-life of chilled hydrobionts. Specimens of rainbow trout (Salmo irideus) served as the objects of the study carried out at a fish-processing plant in the Republic of Karelia. The specimens were decontaminated by a bacteriophage cocktail containing six original virulent phage strains characterized by their pheno- and genotypical properties.
