Implant Placement When an Impacted Tooth and Supernumerary Teeth Are Present in the Maxilla.

Compend Contin Educ Dent

Former Assistant Clinical Professor, University of Maryland School of Dentistry, Baltimore, Maryland; Master, Academy of General Dentistry; Diplomate, International Congress of Oral Implantologists; Private Practice, Silver Spring, Maryland.

The presence of impacted and/or supernumerary teeth in the maxillary anterior region can cause complications when attempting to perform restorations with implants. Extracting these structures can lead to adverse issues related to the adjacent dentition and require osseous grafting to provide a base to house the planned implant, but such an approach increases treatment time and cost. In this case report, a patient presented with an impacted permanent canine oriented on the horizontal plane with several supernumerary teeth coronal to the impacted canine.

Introduction: Understanding how educational pathways may influence clinical competence and work responsibilities is important in providing guidance to academic and clinic stakeholders and physical therapists (PTs) on PT career development. The purpose of this paper was to compare perceived clinical competency and job duties between PTs with formal mentored postprofessional clinical education with PTs without formal postprofessional clinical education.

Review Of Literature: The understanding of self-perceived clinical competence of PTs overall in the United States is limited, especially as related to the impact of postprofessional education.

March 2024

Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopedics, NYU Langone Hospital, Long Island, NY, USA, 1122 Frankling Avenue Suite 106, Garden City, NY, USA.

Background: Lumbar synovial cysts (LSC), best diagnosed on MR studies, may cause symptoms/signs ranging from unilateral radiculopathy to cauda equina compressive syndromes. Attempts at percutaneous treatment of LSC typically fail. Rather, greater safety/efficacy is associated with direct surgical resection with/without fusion.

Background: The literature documents that laminoforaminotomy (CLF), whether performed open, minimally invasively, or microendoscopically, is safer than anterior cervical diskectomy/fusion (ACDF) for lateral cervical disease.

Methods: ACDF for lateral cervical disc disease and/or spondylosis exposes patients to multiple major surgical risk factors not encountered with CLF. These include; carotid artery or jugular vein injuries, esophageal tears, dysphagia, recurrent laryngeal nerve injuries, tracheal injuries, and dysphagia.

At its core, endodontics is a specialty centered on saving patients' teeth. Nonsurgical root canal therapy and nonsurgical retreatment, arguably the "bread and butter" of endodontics, not only facilitate the preservation of the natural dentition, but in many cases, alleviate pain. Most patients arrive for endodontic treatment expecting symptom relief.

Evidence-based screening tools and guidelines for chronic kidney disease (CKD) are inconsistently utilized in primary care. A quality improvement (QI) project evaluated the impact of a CKD education workshop for interprofessional clinical staff and the implementation of the Screening for Occult Renal Disease (SCORED) risk assessment tool to improve identification of patients at risk for CKD in a primary care clinic. Results of the SCORED risk assessment indicated 92% of patient participants were at high risk for CKD.

From posts to protection: Ethical considerations regarding forensic psychiatrists and a duty to warn based on social media.

Behav Sci Law

April 2024

Health Sciences Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

Increasing use of social media in forensic mental health evaluations will lead to new challenges that must be resolved by forensic practitioners and the legal system. One such dilemma is the discovery of information that would typically trigger a legal duty and professional ethics obligation for mental health professionals to breach doctor-patient confidentiality to promote public safety and prevent harm to vulnerable third parties. Although the law and professional organizations offer clear guidance for practitioners in the treatment role, there is currently no clarity from the law or instruction from professional organizations on what mental health professionals should do if they discover such information during a confidential forensic evaluation.
