In everyday dentistry, lithium disilicate is a valid option for single-fix partial dentures, and this material crystallization process is available with two protocols: long and short. This study's aim was to assess the effects of these two different crystallization protocols, long and short, on the marginal gap of lithium disilicate single crowns. A total of 24 abutment plastic teeth were scanned using an intra-oral scanner.

Does treatment in an epilepsy clinic affect epilepsy-related admissions?

Seizure

December 2024

Neurology Department, Shamir-Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, Zerifin, Israel; Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel.

  • A study investigates how a mother's experience of childhood abuse impacts her child's temperament, focusing on factors like self-objectification and body boundaries.
  • The research involved 440 women shortly after childbirth, with assessments of maternal history and infant temperament taken three months later.
  • Results showed that mothers’ self-objectification and feelings of disrupted body boundaries mediated the links between their childhood abuse and their infants’ emotional responses and regulation abilities.

  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a leading cause of dementia, particularly influenced by maternal inheritance but lacking consistent X chromosome risk factors.
  • A new analysis method suggested a 70% risk from the X chromosome in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment or early AD but did not confirm this in a larger Utah Population Database study due to methodological issues.
  • Future studies should focus on identifying X chromosome contributions to late-onset Alzheimer's by looking at newly diagnosed patients rather than relying on data from deceased individuals.

The association of prenatal volatile organic compounds exposure and newborn anthropometrics: A cross-sectional study.

Int J Hyg Environ Health

December 2024

Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology Unit, Pediatric Division, Shamir (Assaf Harofeh) Medical Center, and Sackler School of Medicine, Tel-Aviv University, Israel.

Background: Several studies have associated prenatal exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with adverse health outcomes among newborns. However, little is known about the associations of VOCs at relatively low concentrations with newborn outcomes. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the potential associations between prenatal exposure to VOCs and VOC mixtures with newborn anthropometric measures.

  • Ventriculoperitoneal shunt tip migration into inguinal hernias is common in children but rare in adults, with very few cases documented.
  • This report highlights a unique case where two catheter tips from different shunts migrated into an inguinal hernia, leading to malfunction.
  • The issue was resolved by shortening the distal catheters and suturing them to the abdominal wall, restoring shunt function.

Revital Gandelman-Marton and Jacques Theitler, Neurology Department, Shamir-Assaf Harofeh Medical Center, Zerifin, and Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel.

Vitamin D measurements and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans are recommended in people with intellectual disability and/or epilepsy in order to prevent bone-linked harm. The prevalence of vitamin D supplementation and bone mineral density screening were evaluated in 68 people with epilepsy and intellectual disability (EID) and 68 matched controls with epilepsy without intellectual disability. DXA scans were not performed in any of the people with EID but were performed in 11.

Esophageal high-resolution manometry (HRM) is the gold standard for diagnosing esophageal motility disorders, but it may be poorly tolerated and unsuccessful. We sought to evaluate a protocol for sedation and endoscopy-assisted (SEA) HRM in patients who previously failed standard HRM and assess patient perspectives towards it. Adult patients who previously failed HRM were prospectively enrolled.

IL-7-dependent and -independent lineages of IL-7R-dependent human T cells.

J Clin Invest

October 2024

Laboratory of Human Genetics of Infectious Diseases, Necker Branch, INSERM U1163, Necker Hospital for Sick Children, Paris, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Some babies with a specific mutation in the IL7R gene have a serious immune problem called SCID, where they lack a certain type of immune cells called T cells, but still have normal B and NK cells.
  • In a study of 6 adults who have a similar genetic issue, they showed low levels of T cells but had relatively normal levels of other immune cells, indicating a more specific problem in T cell development.
  • Even though their T cells didn’t grow well in the lab, the study hints that there might be another way T cells can develop that doesn’t depend solely on the IL-7 cytokine.

  • An interatrial shunt is being studied as a potential treatment for heart failure, aimed at lowering left atrial pressure and improving symptoms and outcomes for patients.
  • In a clinical trial involving 508 patients, participants were randomly assigned to receive either the shunt or a placebo, with their progress tracked over a maximum of two years.
  • Results showed that while the shunt had no major safety issues, it did not significantly improve overall effectiveness compared to the placebo, although it appeared to reduce adverse cardiovascular events in patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction.

Importance: Stereotypical motor movements (SMMs) are a form of restricted and repetitive behavior, which is a core symptom of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Current quantification of SMM severity is extremely limited, with studies relying on coarse and subjective caregiver reports or laborious manual annotation of short video recordings.

Objective: To assess the utility of a new open-source AI algorithm that can analyze extensive video recordings of children and automatically identify segments with heterogeneous SMMs, thereby enabling their direct and objective quantification.
