To deliver on the promise of universal health coverage, regions and countries need to invest in high-quality health systems and put quality of care at the forefront of priority setting and agenda. The Western Pacific Region and its member countries should establish measurements and standards to ensure delivery of high-quality services. In order to effectively do so, individual and system capacities to measure and use quality-of-care data should be strengthened, localized initiatives to develop quality-of-care measures of practice and policy relevance need to be carried out, accountability mechanisms should be in place, and the role of quality as a driver of better health outcomes and economic benefits should be emphasized among all stakeholders.

Anticipating the increase in water demand in an urban area requires us to properly understand daily human movement driven by population size, land use, and amenity types among others. Mobility data from phones can capture human movement, but not only is this hard to obtain, but it also does not tell where the population is going. Previous studies have shown that amenity types can be used to predict people's movement patterns; thus, we propose using crowd-sourced amenity data and other open data sources as reasonable proxies for human mobility.

We survey the network properties and response to damage sustained of road networks of cities worldwide, using OpenStreetMap (OSM) data. We find that our primary damage response variable [Formula: see text], which is the average shortest time needed to reach all nodes in a road network (which stand in for locations within a metropolitan area) from an initial node (which stands in for the location of a center for disaster relief operations), is strongly linearly-correlated with pd, the fraction of the road network segments damaged. We find that this result, previously reported for a city's road network as opposed to grid and scale-free idealizations, is widely present across the road networks we have examined regardless of location.

One of the main problems in the study of human migration is predicting how many people will migrate from one place to another. An important model used for this problem is the radiation model for human migration, which models locations as attractors whose attractiveness is moderated by distance as well as attractiveness of neighboring locations. Vaccine licensure requires a very high safety standard and vaccines routinely used are very safe. Vaccine safety monitoring prelicensure and postlicensure enables continual assessment to ensure the benefits outweigh the risks and, when safety problems arise, they are quickly identified, characterised and further problems prevented when possible. We review five vaccine safety case studies: (1) dengue vaccine and enhanced dengue disease, (2) pandemic influenza vaccine and narcolepsy, (3) rotavirus vaccine and intussusception, (4) human papillomavirus vaccine and postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and complex regional pain syndrome, and (5) RTS,S/adjuvant system 01 malaria vaccine and meningitis, cerebral malaria, female mortality and rebound severe malaria.

The role of our gut microbiota in health and disease is largely attributed to the collective metabolic activities of the inhabitant microbes. A system-level framework of the microbial community structure, mediated through metabolite transport, would provide important insights into the complex microbe-microbe and host-microbe chemical interactions. This framework, if adaptable to both mouse and human systems, would be useful for mechanistic interpretations of the vast amounts of experimental data from gut microbiomes in murine animal models, whether humanized or not.

We describe a network-based method to obtain a subset of representative variables from clinical data of subjects of the second Singapore Longitudinal Aging Study (SLAS-2), while preserving to a good extent the predictive performance of the full set with regards to a multi-faceted index of successful aging, SAGE. To examine differences in predictive performance of high-degree nodes ("hubs") and high-centrality ones ("cores"), we implement four subsetting strategies (two degree-based, two centrality-based) and obtain four surrogate sets of variables, which we use as input features for machine learning models to predict the SAGE index of subjects. All four models have variables belonging to the physical, cardiovascular, cognitive and immunological domains among their fifteen most important predictors.

In November 2017, it was announced that the new dengue vaccine ("Dengvaxia") had risks for those not previously exposed to dengue. While some countries proceeded with adjusting guidance accordingly, the Philippines reacted with outrage and political turmoil with naming and shaming of government officials involved in purchasing the vaccine, as well as scientists involved in the vaccine trials and assessment. The result was broken public trust around the dengue vaccine as well heightened anxiety around vaccines in general.
